once losing on 1,800 calories a day, and now suddenly gaining?????

Quote  |  Reply

So yeah...I've been eating 1,800-1,850 cals a day and was losing at this amount....and now all of the sudden Im gaining .2 lbs each day :S its really weird....does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?? I dont want to lose but I dont want to gain either! its really stressful cos I feel pressured to drop my cals or Ill just keep gaining non stop.

Could it have something to do with ovulation or something??? Im not getting my period that soon though....not until 2 weeks....I Dunno I also feel heavier around the belly more than usual....

I just really want to keep eating that amount like I always have and not have to worry about gaining so excessively.

help?

Hi

Silly question but could you be pregnant?

Measure your food intake to make sure that no 'extras' are creeping in.  Sad fact....  Weight gain is usually linked to eating too much!!  Check your new weight.... as you lose weight you need to take in slightly fewer calories.   And check your total calorie intake isn't more than 1000 cals less than your output.  Don't weigh yourself more than once a week... weight fluctuates daily quite naturally.   And drink plenty of water.  2 litres a day... more if you exercise.

Then maybe you could do with a metabolism boost.... Your body could have got used to 1800 cals pver time and slowed its metabolism to match.  So have a day when you consume your full maintenance allowance (2500+ cals?) and do a different kind of exercise to normal.  Next day, go back to 1800.  If you feel hungrier than the metabolism boost has 'worked'.  But still don't weigh yourself for a week.  Daily weighing (if you're not prepared for small gains) is a quick way to feeling very stressed.

well, no Im not expecting to be pregnant :S and that actually kinda worries me....so I rather not think about that for a while.....but its just relaly weird how I jsut started gaining all of the sudden.....

Ill wait til my period comes in the next 2 weeks....hopefully its just water retention or something.Thing is i just came out of an ED, and got my period b ack after a very long struggle....so eating less cals worries me a bit since i dont want to lose my period again.....

so stressful :(

oh and yea im drinking lots and ltos of water a day....so water intake is really good. Im gonna try dropping the cals to 1,700 to see what happens :/

Nobody can tell you what to do, but I don't think dropping to 1700 is the best strategy given your history. Please make sure you won't start restricting again, or getting into that mentality of thinking eating less is better than more.

i second gi-jane, i was maintaining on 1800 calories and i saw a .5lb gain but i ate 2100 calories for the next few days afterwards (i was so darn hungry!) and then went back to 1800 and i lost it all... and more.

not good in my position but it worked.

thing is this happened to me once, and I dropped the cals for a while and then went back up again and was able to maintain on a higher amount of calories...i dunno , I know Im not going to restrict as much as to go crazy about losing weight....all I really want is to be able to control my weight like I was before...and be able to eat that amount of cals without any weight gain....

its really frustrating cos I had been eating that amoutn for 2 months now without a problem..and eating that amount brought my period back as well...since its a very healthy amount for my age...

we'll see...

'Healthy amount for my age'.... means you're how old?  If you're under 20 then your body is still developing and maturing and you should expect to gradually gain weight in the process.   If you were undereating to the point where your periods stopped then your body is also still recovering.

Put the scales away.  Live life instead.
healthy amount for my age, yes indeed. I did go to a nutritionist and she was the one who told me about this, so its not like im making it up. I do live life, but I also like to take care of myself and I dont wanna just neglect myself like I have before...it makes me feel miserable in the end, in other words..I end up living even less of a happy life than the one Im living when Im on control.

really....I know that you're trying to help me out with this but, telling me those things wont really mean much right now...I guess I just need real advice as to where the gain is coming from.

thanks anyway I appreciate it.

grayuk: Not silly at all!

Neglecting yourself means undereating.  Looking after yourself is what you're doing right now.  Eating properly is being in control.  Restricting is giving up control to an illness.

"I need real advice where the gain is coming from..... " it's coming from your body recovering and it's only temporary.  Enjoy it and embrace it.

There are many possibilities:

1) You're on the days in your cycle, where your body is gaining weight (some women gain 2-3 pounds before menstruation and i all comes off);

2) The pregnancy idea is not silly;

3) You started taking some meds that make you gain;

4) You eat above maintenance: measure/weigh foods you eat;

5) If you were loosing previously, that might mean that your body entered starvation mode. Your body deducted that there is shortage of food, so it decreased metabolism and stores energy in fat cells;

6) You work out and you are building muscles. Muscle cells weigh more than fat cells.

What can help: zone diet has been proven to help in such situations, yyonah basically described it to you (even though she did not know that it was zone diet). On such diet you eat more kcals on some days (the best are workout days) and much less on the others. So your total weekly intake averages to 1800 per day, but on some days you eat, say, 2000, on others 1600.

Good luck!

Have you had a bowel movement in awhile?  I get constipated a lot and it causes me to gain pounds of weight, then when it finally moves on, I loose all of the weight.

2 pounds a day is alot to be putting on!! it sounds like your retaining water how long did you lose weight before turn to gaining?.

also you said you drink alot of water!, if it's flavered water check to see if it containes splanda, my friend was drinking water that had splanda in it and was gaining weight but not at the rate you are. don't cut your cal's..

well I guess it could be water retention?...Im only about 2 weeks away from my period like I said...my breast do feel a bit more tender and hurt just a bit.. but I dunno I guess its weird to me..

how could I have entered starvation mode?? if I ate well above 1,800 calories, which I know are plenty enough to not get me into starvation mode (my nutritionist was the one that said to eat that amount to get healthy and I did and it worked)...so that doesnt make sense on that amount of calories a day.

Its not weight from the recovery either because Ive been on recovery for more than 4 months..and the first month maybe the first weeks its when you see the first rapid weight gain that goes down pretty quickly.

Im hoping its all because of that time of the month coming soon..I  mean Im supposed to be gettign my period next week...

oh well..
