Any one else been in a slump?
Ah, I do NOT know what has been wrong with me lately, but I just can not find the motivation to work out.
I always say the night before that I'll make it to the gym, but I never do. I'm lucky if I make it there once in the whole week.
It's been like this for about 3 weeks now where I don't want to do anything, but lay down most of the day. (I don't work so I have plenty of time for this. Ha Ha.) My anxieties prevent me from sleeping though, so I just lay there for hours with my mind racing.
I'll usually wake up, think about going, have my breakfast, but afterwards I just start feeling really sluggish and tired and think about how hard I push it at the gym and it puts me off. Ha Ha. I have a little bit of energy in there, but my own laziness overrides it.
I don't know if I'm depressed or if it's the newly cold weather, maybe a combination of both, but I just can't seem to pick myself up and it has me discouraged and frustrated with myself.
Anyone else going through something similar?
P.S. I really, really miss summer. :(
I really miss summer too. I dislike being cold and having my body/bones chilled.
As far as you getting up and changing that motivation....ask yourself this....How did you feel after you exercised? Was your body energized? Was your outlook for the day positively increased?
Focus on the benefits of the gym (or whatever exercise you like). Focus on how it makes you feel. Then ask yourself, how in the world you can possibly deny your body and mind that fantabulous feeling?
I read an article where the woman said that when she feels lazy, she tells herself she will go to the gym, and just listen to an iPod in the locker room for 30 minutes - usually ends up working out. Maybe a trick like that would work for you.
I definitely understand how you're feeling. I have better luck with a class than a gym for that exact reason. More structured.
But.. sometimes I will 'trick' myself into going to the gym, riding my bike, or walking. I'll think of some part of the activity that I like, i.e. the rowing machine at the gym, or a walk around this pretty little lagoon near my house. I'll say, 'Just go and do that bit because you enjoy it. Then you can go home. You don't have to push yourself today. Just have fun.' I usually end up doing more but with a much better attitude. It's getting yourself there that is the real challenge, so I use that trick to get the wheels in motion. iPod helps a lot, too. I make myself special workout playlists of stuff I really like that'll last about the length of time I want to workout.
Don't stress, though. Motivation will come!
I tend to go through slumps like this, too. What I find works for me is I'll slowly get myself ready for the gym. I'll say "okay, I will just put on my workout shorts" and then "I'll just put on my socks" and, weirdly enough, once I've got myself completely ready for the gym it makes me a little more motivated. Once I get there, I'm raring to go. I also have very specific songs on my playlist that tend to pump me up for my workout, so playing those before I go energizes me. I guess it is all about fooling yourself into going.
Another thing that also works is signing up for classes that you love. I am taking a hip hop class that nearly kills me every time, but I love it so much, it would take a heckuva lot to get me to miss it.
definitely in a slump too!
stopped losing weight a while ago, and now with this new job i stopped going to the gym 6 days a week, and don't plan to exercise more than once or twice a week at the most.
i'm just really frustrated i guess, still feel like a blob, so now i'm back at 1500 calories a day and see if anything changes. bah.
I'm glad i'm not the only one :)
Like it was said above, I have to really psyche myself out to work out as well. Tonight I literally berated myself and forced myself to work out at home by doing some pilates. But I did and you know what I felt better after I did because I felt like I accomplished something that was hard to do.
I have to say that variety is my problem and when I actually go to the gym I mix it up a lot (since like the author I'm not working right now). Sometimes I take a class, sometimes I do the treadmill or a little weight training. I even change the time I go to the gym so I don't get bored with seeing the same people everyday :).
I have been in a huge slump too.... no motivation to work out or even do the exercises that I used to love to do. I think part of it is the cold weather, part is just getting out of a routine. I like the ideas here for motivation and I will have to give them a try. I need to get back into shape, so thanks for sharing!
