Say one positive thing about yourself!

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, here's the deal.  I'm 49 years old (egad - almost 50) and I have decided to change one major thing in my life.  I am not going to beat myself up anymore. I am my own worst critic and quite frankly I'm tired of it.

When we try and watch what we eat and "fail" then we tell ourselves how terrible we are.  Or if we try and work out, but we don't reach our expectations, then once again we feel we are the scum of the earth.

So, everyone of us should say something good about ourselves.  Something we like about our bodies, our relationships with other people, how we do our jobs, what good parents we are - SOMETHING!!!!!

Just try it - believe me, you will feel better!

I might mess up, but I don' give up.

I am worth it.  I deserve it.

I'm having a really bad self image day today, but I'll try.

I have pretty hair and skin..On the personality side, I am a very caring person and always try to put other people first.

Another positive thing about myself,

I'm a good teacher and hopefully a good motivator.

texmom - what is this hopefully stuff!? After having read your posts, I would say that you are definately a GREAT motivator!!! If you teach as well as you encourage then you are a FANTASTIC teacher as well.

Thanks Sunnim,

I was thinking about how yesterday the Level 1 students were saying this and that about next semester.  I said "for those of you who make it"  They said, "you think some of us won't make it?"  I told them "there are always some who have to take Level 1 again."

I was thinking that wasn't a very positive thing to say.  But it is true.  We told them in clinical yesterday, everyone is passing clinical so far, but that isn't so about class.  But no one's grades are so low they can't bring them up to passing.

I start out the semester always being very positive and upbeat, telling them they can do it and to study hard.  I encourage them to use their time well.  It is such a hard course and and often a total departure from the type of schooling they have had before!  Nursing is like a subculture of society with it's own set of ethics.  We have to teach the students to think critically, to make judgements that effect people's lives.  We have to try and prepare them for world of highly professional people and stuff a lot of knowledge into those heads in a short time as well as an insatiable curiousity, teachability, and drive to always move forward.

That first level is such a culture shock, people often have problems.  People who have always made A's easily suddenly have to learn how to study.  Well, I've rambled on about that long enough.  For those who don't remember, I'm teaching in a college nursing program.

Your welcome texmom - nurses have one of the hardest jobs in the world - with one of the narrowest margins for error. It takes a special person to become a nurse.
