Will one week of no exercise ruin things for me???????????

Quote  |  Reply

I'm hypothyroid and have been having pain in the left side of my chest right down to the fingers on my left arm when I exercise vigorously.

I spoke to my doc and he said to stop exercising for 1 week and take the thyroid test again. I've lost 18 pounds in 3 months and he thinks the weight loss has affected my thyroid levels.

I'm just wondering if this is going to make me put on some pounds. I hope not.

I need some advice here........

Eat right, eat healthy, eat smart... and you'll be fine.  Plenty of people lose the weight just through calorie intake alone so you can easily not workout for a week and maintain or even lose!  Just get your minimum 1200+ and take care of yourself!

Whether you gain a pound or two or not it's far more important to listen to your doctor.  And if losing weight so rapidly is making the thyroid problem worse then maybe it would do you good to stop losing for a while. Best of luck.

yep listen to your dr and just make sure to eat healthy.  as far as having a week off, i think it might depend on your current fitness level.  many body builders take a recovery week off from time to time, and i've heard of some runners taking a week off before a marathon. it allows the body to fully recover & some report back that they actually felt stronger the next week.  im not too sure how it is for the rest of us though, but im sure it won't hurt your weight loss.

You will be fine.

I had to take the first week in April off of going to the gym. I watched what I ate and everything worked out, I even lost during the week. I felt much stronger when i went back and met with my trainer for the frist time, we had to up the weights!

Your muscles do need time to recover. When you workout it breaks down the muscle tissue/fibers and they are in constant repair while you're active like that. A week of recovery allows them adequate time to heal themselves before you start breaking them down again. You'll probably flush some water out as well since the muscle won't be holding onto it for the repairs.

Don't sweat it, it's just one week in the course of the rest of your life.

Take care of yourself

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I feel much better now. I guess my health is most important.

It's just one week after all.

I hope the tests come back fine.

sometimes it's good to take a week off.....it helps avoid 'overtraining' and it 'resets' your system! Just eat ok, and you'll be fine!

My ex had hypo as well, and it's def soemthing not to be taken lightly! Follow what doc says!

Just eat a little less than you do when you exercise and you should still have a good deficit.

Basically, like they said, don't stress, the time off could help you :D

i'm not sure what kind of exercise you were doing before but you should be fine as long as you just don't sit on the couch. you would be surprised how much weight you can loose just by counting calories and walking!

On the Australian biggest looser there was a guy with a heart condition who wasn't alowd to get his heard rate above a sertain number so the only exercise he could do was walking. one week he lost 12 Kg!

you'll be fine just don't let it phase you.
