Getting one Wisdom Tooth removed tomorrow. Super nervous.

Quote  |  Reply

Hi there-

Just needed to vent. Getting my upper left wisdom tooth out tomorrow at 1pm.

Super nervous. Even though I have no reason to. I dont really have a big fear of the needle (just had it at the beginning of the month, two actually for three cavities that I had filled- had a 5 min panic attack after I got them, but was fine and relaxed once I felt that it didnt hurt)

I am taking some Adivan/Lorazepan to calm my nerves before, then getting a needle for freezing and off we go! I think I should be fine b/c Ativan is taking care of my nauseas nervous feeling, the needle takes pain, and my iPod drowns out the sounds a bit. Only a 30 min appt.....

I keep reading online how easy a top tooth removal is, sometimes the tooth has come out in a matter of minutes.

I wish I had a dentist friend that could reassure me right now. I just hate this nervous feeling- I won't sleep well, or eat well tomorrow morning (although I will try to)

March has been the month of appointments for me, Dentist x2, doctor, gyno....

:(

I had all 4 removed at once... one should be a breeze! Good luck!

I got put to sleep though. :/ I felt sick after but slept the rest of the day pretty much after.

Hey! Do not worry! I had my upper 2 removed in the same day. No problem, you won't feel a thing!!!! I am a very nervous person and I went there feeling so scared and when the dentist did his job I didn't even know he was finished!

I hate needles and dentists but I had had a lot of dentistry job done in my mouth for the last 10 years and let me tell you that it has never hurt at all! I had all my wisdom teeth removed, I had had gum surgery twice and some other things but to tell you the truth nothing had ever hurt! Of course you have to have the right drugs, pain drugs and you will be fine. Do noy worry! Everything will be fine!!! Trust me!

I was taking 2 vicodins every 4 hours and I was still in pain but it wasn't intolerable.

I had all 4 removed using local anesthetic.  I am glad I did it that way instead of being put out completely -- I went straight home and went out with my friends.  My mouth was a little sore, but other than that I was fine.  My sister was put out when she had hers removed, and she was in bed throwing up the entire rest of the day...

You'll be fine...

only one?  pshaw.

'bunny, how did you get vicodin?  all i got was tylenol with codeine (not that i don't love tylenol with codeine, but i've never had vicodin!).

i got all four of mine taken out surgically on a thursday, was partying friday, and sailed in (and won) a regatta saturday.

other than being really hungry after 10 days on liquid foods, it was no big.

Last year about this time, I had one wisdom tooth removed. The next 4 days were awful. Mind you, my tooth had been infected and I was on antibiotics for a week before the surgery because they will not remove an infected tooth. 5 months later, I had the other 3 removed, and healed MUCH quicker than I did with just the one tooth removed! I was confused with that, but also OK with it :)

I don't know, he prescribed me with about 20 vicodins. I still have 2-3 left.

I didn't really like taking them cause they made me sooo sleepy and super confused. More so than I usually am, lol.

I don't know why people freak out about wisdom teeth so much. I was given viodin as well. I took one and had no problems.

Alibsam- I would be just as freaked out with any tooth removal. I don't like the nervous feeling of anxiety or the needle, or the sounds.

I feel fortunate that this is the biggest health issue in my life right now, don't get me wrong. I am just nervous about it and hearing from others makes me feel much better.

I am happy that it's only one tooth. Going in at 1:15, should be home just after 2pm.

Anyone taken Ativan/Lorazepan before? I'm taking it before my appt to control my anxiety. They say it can make you sleepy so I imagine ill just want to sleep a bit when I get home?

Make sure the doctor knows you're taking them.

I wish I had something for anxiety. >.<

CPT- oh yeah. we discussed it, then I went to my dr to get a prescription. he says alot of ppl take oral sedatives for dentistry... i guess alot of people take a pill just for a cleaning - they hate the dentist that much!

Hey!

I got all 4 of mine out about 2 weeks ago. I just got Novacaine and barely took my pain meds but i'm sensitive to them so they knocked me out for a few days.

It went really quick. I thought my dentist had put in an extra numbing shot but he had already taken out two of my teeth.

Make sure you avoid warm liquids the first day! it hurts alot ( i found out the hard way)

Good luck!!

My husband was put under to have all 3 (he only had 3) removed at once, but they had to remove them in chunks because of how they were growing.  He was prescribed vicodin, but only ended up taking ibuprofen instead.

One of my friends just had his wisdom teeth taken out 2 weeks ago, and besides being annoyed at an only liquid diet for a couple days, he didn't really have any pain.

My other friend had his out a few years ago, and had some pain, but he complains a lot, so not sure how much of that is real (he's a nice guy, and we all have negative points, he just complains... a lot...).

So you'll be fine ^_^.  People make out the dentist to be worse than it really is.  Just sit back, relax, and next thing you know, you're good to go.  Just make sure to keep the hole clean, but your dentist will tell you all about that.

You'll be fine.  Two days before Christmas of 2006, I had 4 wisdoms plus 8 other teeth removed in one go in preparation for radiation treatment to the jaw/neck.  I was determined not to miss out on Christmas  goodies, and even managed to gingerly chew on dry crackers and dip, lol. I had plenty of stitches, except for one corner, so I was more worried about infection than pain. I only took pain relief a few times because I assumed I would need it, then soon realized I didn't actually need it.

Lucky for me I have a small mouth, so even when I smile, it is not noticeable that I have 12 teeth missing. I am desperately trying to hold onto what teeth I have left, as I will be unable to wear dentures. Any little niggle of tooth ache, gum irriation or the gritty feel of tooth crumbling  fills me with terror.

My words to you..don't sweat the small stuff. At worst, all it will be is a day or two of discomfort or pain.

The pills you are describing sound familiar - they MAY have been like the one I took pre-removal. all I know is the one I took before my appt was a little blue one (no not that kind of little blue pill) and it was the best drug I have ever had in my life. hahaha.

I had to take it 45 min before the procedure at home and have someone drive me in. I thought the afternoon news was the most hilarious thing ever - I was so dopey I couldn't tie my own shoes (also found this hilarious) - I couldn't do up my own seatbelt. Everything was hilarious - including the pulling of the 4 wisdom teeth. I remember sitting there thinking "the sounds are horrible, I see blood on the dentists hands - and I don't care at ALL" It was terrific. I did fall asleep for half the procedure I think and was sleepy and dopey for the rest of the day but not in much pain. Just watched a movie and napped and sipped (don't use a straw!) chocolate milk shakes.

A little tender to eat for about the next week - but really just slowed down my chewing. Other than the slow chewing I was back to normal very quickly.

JEF9up- yup thats ativan. its a tiny blue pill. im taking one (0.5mg) about 30 min before my appt. Having hubby drop me off and mom drive me home....

I just feeling really nervous/nauseaus right now, so looking forward to taking the Ativan around 12:30ish (my appts at 1:15) so I can stop feeling this way.

This will probably be less traumatic than the three cavities I had filled at the beginning of March.

I should be in and out in around 30 mins... I have the rest of the day off work and my mom is going to hang out for a bit with me in the afternoon.

I'm terrified of going to the dentist.  I got my first filling at 22 and my mom had to hold my hand.  I'm seriously a chicken.

I had all four removed at once.  It was a breeze!  My husband went across the street to get coffee and by the time he got back I was finished - it took about 10 minutes.  The scariest part was my dentist's hands - they were huge.

I had vicodin but took one and got really sick.  I decided to see if I really needed pain meds and didn't.   My face didn't swell or bruise either.  I was back to normal in just a couple of days.  I had been suffering with wisdom teeth pain for years and felt so silly for waiting so long.

jpoage- your comments made me feel so much better. ya- i am hoping that it takes only a few minutes. its partially grown out already. and only getting one taken out.

i just hate this anxious/nervous feeling that i have right now. cant calm myself down. looking forward to taking the Ativan to relieve this ....then it should be a breeze from there.

I had a wisdom tooth and molar pulled a couple years ago with NO anasthetic.  Had a double abcess, was in the ER the night before with vomiting and faintness so they couldn't put me under and because the area was so inflamed, they couldn't get it numb.  It only took a couple minutes.  Freaked me out and hurt, but not as bad as you'd think.  I was probably in so much pain from the actual abcess that the pain of getting my teeth pulled barely registered.

You'll do fine.  I envy you.  My teeth are genetically rotten and I always have so much work that needs to be done that I can't afford to get the rest of my wisdom teeth out.  I will rejoice the day I actually get them out!

You're extremely lucky to have to get only one taken out.  In September, I had all four, plus a molar removed.  The molar was abcessed, so I was on all kinds of meds to clear that up before the actual surgery (and the abcess hurt much, much worse than getting all 5 teeth out) .  They ended up running into some complications, so I was under for quite awhile (longer than usual).  I was prescribed lortabs which made me sick to my stomach, so I ended up taking ibprofren instead.  Just remember not to sip anything through a straw.  I heard that the dry socket is really, really painful so try to avoid that at all costs!  Also, I don't know if it was because of the complications or not, but they also told me not to drink or eat an soft drinks or dairy products for 2 weeks after the surgery.  I wasn't expecting that.

Now, several month later, I can't imagine being in as much pain as I was with the abcess.  My mouth, as a whole isn't nearly as crowded and the holes have healed up nicely.  The stitches falling out really freaked me out.  This post wasn't supposed to scare you, I just had an usually rough time.  Would I do it all over again?  No.  Do I regret it?  Not one bit!
