I only have 250 calories left!!

Quote  |  Reply

So, I woke up this morning starving!! But before I could eat I had to change 2 kids diapers; feed them both and clean up their mess so after doing all that I was ravinous (sp?). So, I finished my son's pop tart, ate a Fiber one bar and then decided to just eat left overs from dinner last night which consisted of 2 Grands Biscuits and 2 bakes chicken thighs. After all this you think I would have been stuffed but I wasnt so I made a strawberry smoothie with strawberries, banana, 1/2 cup orange juice, splenda and ice. Well, now I am stuffed, sleepy and mad at myself for this ridiculous behavior. I decided to log what I ate and realized that I only have 250 calories left for the rest of the day and its only 2pm!!! I have completely ruined this day. Does anyone have advice on what I can eat for dinner and try to reign this day back in. I do need to let you know that I am trying to eat only 1600 calories a day and am currently nursing my 6 month daughter so I do burn extra calories making milk but I need some advice - Any would be appreciated. Also, what should I do for those days when I just cant seemed to get satisfied because no matter what I eat I am still hungry?

Do you have time to exercise today so that you can "buy" yourself a couple hundred more calories for dinner?  That's what I do when I eat too much during the day.  Jump rope, go for a quick jog or a long walk, situps, pushups, anything...

I think maybe I will take the kids for a walk. That should help. I just have to get myself motivated as I am now so full that I am wanting to take a nap!!!! Thanks for the advice.

Although noone will likely come out and say it, I think we all have those days here and there....I had one myself about three days ago.  It might just be your bodies way of saying that 'you know, right now, I need a little more fuel...'

I've talked to my mom, who is a diet planner at a seniors home, and on a diet herself.   Her words were basically this:  Falling off the wagon for a day here and there isn't going to kill you, as long as you don't let the wagon run you over.

Don't stress over one day.  Just don't go overboard for supper, and get back on track tomorrow.  An extra 1000 calories isn't going to ruin the progress you've made so far, and I've found that if I give myself a hungry day once or twice a month as a reward, it makes the other 29 days easier to cope with when you are a little hungry.

Don't be so hard on yourself!!  I've been there, done that many times!!  Sometimes the day gets away with you, especially when you have babies to take care of.

Forget about salvaging the day -- just worry about doing the right thing for your next meal.  Have a healthy salad with some grilled chicken breast for dinner, go for a long walk with your kids and call it a day.  Vow that you will do better tomorrow, and plan out your meals and snacks in advance.  Write them down, like a schedule and then when "mom" duties overwhelm, your list will tell you what to do instead of just stuffing your mouth with the first thing.

Also, check with your doctor.  I have a feeling that 1600 calories is not enough for a nursing mother.

I agree, 1600 calories for a nursing mother may not be enough. I know the baby is 6 months old and you are already thinking about loosing some pounds, but be reasonable. Your body needs additional calories to compensate for the nursing. I would personally increase to 2000-2100 calories. This would remedy the hunger and give you the fuel to meet the demands being put on your body with two children who wear diapers. Take it from a mother of five, EAT, but eat quality foods. Eat fruits and veggies that will be more filling. I would not at this time go below 2000 calories. By the time you have nursed a baby all the through the day and into the night, you have burned up those calories. STOP, do not beat yourself up anymore over a day. Try the increased calories for a few days, and let us know how it is going.

Believe me, I went through those days just a little while ago.  It is hard!

I agree with the previous posters.  Forget breakfast - yeah, you went over, big deal.  Start fresh with your next meal and continue the day as if you did well with breakfast.  Also, maybe keep around some really good grab and go foods?  Keep vegetables and fruit cut up in the fridge so they are easy to eat.  The fiber one bars are good for fiber, but they also have a lot of sugar and therefore calories, and I never feel satisfied with just one.

And really, I don't think 1600 calories is enough, though admittedly, I don't know your size.  I mean, with two little kids, you have to be at least lightly active, and you are breastfeeding.  I would definitely try to keep my calories up in maintenance, and use exercise to tone up a bit until you stop breastfeeding.  (Not that I exercised or dieted at this stage - I just survived!)

Good luck!

Losing weight doesn't have to be about stressing out about food. Go get some exersice and that way if you're still hungry, you can eat more. Also, if you're THIS hungry today, take a break and eat at your maintenience today and/or tomorrow. You wont gain weight and you're body will thank you. Definitely get more exercise into you're routine so that you don't feel like you've wasted your day. Even on days where I barely have a deficit, if i've worked out, I still feel great.

skinless chicken breast, beans and broth= filling, high protein high fiber soup!

When I'm trying to have a low cal filling lunch (I know you're looking for dinner) I usually have some filling soup with a wheat roll and I feel pretty good.

When I don't have many calories left in the day I go for a Healthy Choice frozen dinner like Teriyaki Chicken.  It will only put you over maybe 100 calories, which you can burn off in that walk.  Rock it mama!

I was at my calorie limit yesterday. Starving. I had a Chicken Club Sandwich + fries at Mcdonalds......then later a chocolate shake.

I woke up a pound lighter than yesterday. My point is that one bad day won't kill you. If you gain a pound....you gain a pound. You learn from it and try not to do it again.

I dont want to encourage you to eat junk like that. I want to say that you should eat normal for dinner. Just to be clear....

its days like these when you can just have a sandwhich or something small for dinner and leave it at that, even if it goes 100 or something over, its a one off

jesus i had a day like this and then some. i didnt eat breakfast like an idiot, worked until 1:30, didn't get home til 2 so by then i was starving. it started with half a pbj. and went downhill from there. i ate and ate and ate. my stomach still hurts right now. my problem is that i cant skip meals. and i tend to undereat the day after i do these things, so tom, my main goal is to get up and eat breakfast! you should make sometime for yourself to eat breakfast too! your needs are just as important as your children's and it just starts a cycle when you skip a meal

Yeah, I've gone over my 1200 cal/day limit just about every day since I've joined CC 10 days ago :( OOPS However, I haven't been logging all of my activity and I'm not sure if my calorie counts are correct since I just pick the closest thing I can find that matches what I've eaten and I'm not always sure about portion sizes.  So I'm thinking that my calorie intake might actually be lower than I am logging.  I don't think you should worry at all.  Especially since you are breastfeeding.  Like the others have said, you should probably increase your calories really.  And don't feel bad..I often find myself eating what my daughter doesn't...just cause I don't want it to go to waste.   I am working on breaking that habit for sure : )  I'm sure you will get back on track soon enough.

I nursed my 3 kids, I don't think 1600 cal is enough for you unless you are weaning the baby and she is eating a lot more food than she is nursing. Give yourself a break, one bad day won't hurt you in the long run.  You know they say on a plane to put your oxygen mask on first and your kids second. So try to take a few minutes to take care of yourself before the kids get going.  Get up 10 minutes earlier and have a healthy snack 1st and have your breakfast later in the morning when you have more time.

Also, as a Mom I know that I sometimes think I'm hungry when what I really am is thirsty (especially when you are nursing) & exhausted. Way to go on the weight loss!

I agree with everyone 1st - one day will not kill ya and 2nd- you may be eating too little.  I have had a few days where I had little to no exercise and ate my maintenance calories.  I still lost a pound.  You need to mix up you calorie intake through out the week.  You need to keep your body guessing.  If you eat too low all the time you won't burn much because your body is holding it.  If you change it up you keep you body guessing and it will burn more because it's not holding it in starvation mode.
