Only fruit for breakfast?

Does it really increase or "jumpstart" your metabolism?

That's a new one on me.  I'll be checking back to see answers on this one.

I'm not sure about 'jumpstarting' but I think that eating different things everyday and switching around what you eat is really good for your body to stop it getting too used to dealing with the same kinds of foods day in and day out.

In summer I love nothing more than just eating fruit for breakfast (by that I mean a bowl full of a few different kinds chopped up, not just one apple or something really small like that) If my body feels like just eating fruit when its all sunny and warm outside then thats what I give it. Go with what you feel like :D

Any food in the morning will jumpstart your metabolism.   Fruit is a great choice - the natural sugars are a good way to start the day - but, on its own, can leave you feeling quite empty fairly quickly afterwards.  Fruit combined with other foods at breakfast can keep you satisfied for longer.

it's the the easiest thing for your body to process so it can help your body get started and feel good all day. i always eat a piece of fruit for breakfast. the skinny bitch diet says for breakfast you should have a piece of fruit and then wait a few minutes, have another piece of fruit, and wait a few minutes, and have another if you want it. it works great for me.

breakfast in general will jumpstart your metabolism. aftyer sleeping for 6 or more hours, your body will feel like it's fasting, so when you awake, you break the fast (breakfast).

i can't stand just fruit for breakfast! the only time i've done this is when i was on holiday and i couldn't get any healthy food for breakfast so i got 2 bananas and eat them a couple of hours apart, i was soo hungry, & felt unsatisfied for the rest of the day. once i eat half a tin of fruit salad for breakfast which was <100cal and it was probably the worst breakfast ive ever had in my life :) haha.. i find it i eat something decent in the morning and i'm less likely to get the munchies later on.

A great breakfast is plain baking oats (plain oatmeal, no sugar or anything added), with fresh fruit (pear, blackberries, strawberries, Gigi berries, etc.).  I usually have 1/3 cup Robin Hood Baking Oats, with 1/2 or 1 cup of fruit or 1/2 or 1 banana or 1/2 a pear (I don't add honey or sugar, but I sometimes add spices - YUM).  If you find that to be too plain, add some honey for sweetness, cinnamon, nutmeg etc.  It is very filling, high in fibre, minerals and vitamins, etc.

I find that if I just eat fruit for breakfast, I am hungry an hour later.  I eat every three hours.  This breakfast fills me for the three hours, and when I had to wait longer to eat, I still was satisfied.

putting it nicely, i cant believe there are such naive ppl out there, if this wasnt so sensored id write more but like JEEEEZ ppl.

well, agruskin are you calling me naive? that i may be, but if fruit for breakfast is not a good idea, please tell me and please tell me why, oh great one.

ha!

OK

1st of all, are you really at a healthy weight bc i DO remember not so long ago you were posting about being underweight and not wanting to gain even when ppl told u u needed to for health.

second, just fruit for bfast, correct?  yea, thats not too healthy sounding to me.  no, im not a nutritionsit, i dont count fat, carbs, protein and that stuff, but just fruit for bfast, common sense tells me thats not enough.  each meal should try to have everything, ex-2 slices of toast w/ 2 eggs, a galss of milk, and a banana.  ok, most ppl work+rush in the morning, make a quick PB+J sandwich, grab an apple for the road and maybe a yogurt or glass of milk.  yea, just fruit doesnt have enough energy in it.  its not balanced.

or, you can go ahead and do whatever it is that you want w your life.

all the qs though, why cant ppl jsut be happy w/themselves.  there is no wrong or rt way to eat+live, moderation and relax already!

ok you need to calm down a bit, take a deep breath, and relax, not me. the only reason i was wondering was because i run 20+ miles/week and have very high metabolism, but will be sedentary for the next 2 weeks so i wanted some tips to help keep it up during that time.

and secondly, thank you for reminding me that i was underweight, i appreciate that. i went to the dr. today for my preop appt and they mentioned nothing about my weight and said i was perfectly healthy for surgery. now that i am at a happy medium i'd like to stay that way.

thirdly, why the h*** are you even on this site if you are happy with yourself? don't be such a hypocrite.

lastly, i hate arguing with people so reply all you want, i'm done.

I do feel that when I eat a fruit in the morning, it wakes my metabolism up. Do take note that some fruits cause gas, though.

I agree with agruskin about having balanced meals. Fruit is a good addition to your breakfast! Especially since you are running a lot, you should be eating more to compensate for the calories you lose during your runs.

lol, thanks DANIELLE!!

yeah i'm not running at all because i had surgery today. thats why i was trying to find little tips to help keep my metabolism up while i'm sedentary.

Tips to keep metabolism up whilst recovering from surgery.

  • Move around as much as possible.  Try not to sit still for long periods.   You may not be able to run but you if you can walk, take a walk
  • Eat regularly... a light meal or snack every 2 hours
  • Drink plenty of fluids...
  • Eat enough..... a lightly active adult female needs 1900-2100 cals a day

There is no one food that will jumpstart metabolism... including fruit.

thanks g-i jane....exactly what i was looking for!

What I have read is that a "serving" (about 1/2 an apple) of fruit in the morning will help aid in digestion and boost your metabolism (because most are full of fibers). As said previously, food in the morning period boosts the metabolism, so eat your breakfast. This "fruit" doesn't have to be considered your entire breakfast. You can follow up an hour later with something else.

G-i jane said it like it is.

Alyssa, I personally don't think you have to be "unhappy" to be on this site. Yes, it is largely a site to help people lose weight by counting calories and exercising, but it is also a community of people who are seeking to become healthier and happier and/or stay healthy and happy. I truly think Agruskin was just trying to give some helpful advice, which people should be able to do without being called a hypocrite. If you ask for help, don't insult the person who tries to give it to you.
