Only two drinks: is this normal?

Quote  |  Reply

Is it normal to see a 1-2 pound weight gain after drinking?

I had only two shots of 80 proof vodka with diet soda;  it fit into my calorie allowance, but it seems whenever I drink even just one-two shots I gain.  Does anyone experience this?

Im just going to stop drinking, especially if this happens.  It isnt worth it!

Did you weigh yourself at the same time? Alcohol dehydrates the body which will cause it to retain water to hydrate itself so what you are seeing is water weight gain.
I second what Pooney26 says.  My suggestion would be to make sure you drink plenty of water before and after having alcohol.  I too noticed that after having a drink I would retain some water due to dehydration, so now I just make sure I am thouroughly hydrated prior to drinking.

I put on about 3-4 lbs if I have a few beers.  Yup it's normal.

I don't know. Two weeks ago I drank half a pitcher of beer, 3 shots of Jack Daniels, 3 Jack and Cokes, had some chilli, 8 oz of soft serve ice cream, and a third of a slice of cheesecake.

The scale didn't really move at all the next day. I was kind of confused (and hungover).

I think whatever you're seeing is water weight.

Usually after a drinking night I am much lighter from the diuretic effect of alcohol. To the tune of 4-5 lb. Then again I also eat pretty light that night to offset the extra vodka calories.
remember different calories are absorbed and processed differently in the body.  Those from alcohol I think hit the body a lot more.  Now I do belive in daily weighing because it gives yourself a good idea of whats going on, but you have to understand there are fluctuations due to a lot of different things.  Now if you lose an average of a pound a week, and then one day you drink and gain a pound or two but by the end of the week you still have hit your average loss then realise its not gaining its just your bodys reaction to the process of the alcohol and not added weight.
I agree with what everyone has said about water weight fluctuations. I find that with a drink or two, my weight is usually up the next morning; however, if I drink a lot my weight will be down (diuretic effect). Of course, it will be back to normal within a day or two.
Yep very normal. I never weigh myself either right after or the next morning after having a few drinks. I always gain temporary weight after drinking alcohol. I just drink extra water the next day to re-hydrate my body.
postalemployed, i think you meant to say different substances are absorbed and processed differently in the body.  Remember, a calorie is a unit of energy. Like a pound is a unit of weight.  A calorie from alcohol does not cause more or less potential weight gain than a calorie of bread or vegetables, just like a pound of feathers is not lighter than a pound of bricks (well i guess that would be probably about one brick... you get my point).  However, alcohol will change the body's chemistry and may make it do weird things, things that may be different from one body to the next depending on many different factors, and that is the point i think you were making.  Remember, a calorie is a calorie.
