Ooooopsie!
Went grocery shopping yesterday. Picked up a head of cauliflower and didn't think anything of it, until I notice it rang up at $5.99!!! OUCH! Looked closer at the receipt and noticed it was "organic". Oh well.
Cut it up, had some for lunch today and .....
WOW it was DELICIOUS!
Am I just imagining it or do organic produce taste WAY better than regular!
I'm surprised!!!!
What exactly does that mean anyways...no pesticides?
!~H~
Most organic fruits and vegetables catain no pesticides chemicals hormones etc. You will find that most organic fruits may be smaller because they arent injected with chemicals/hormones to make them grow...this keeps the taste nice and concentrated though and very sweet!
I believe it to an extent...
To me, vine ripened tomatoes are better than hot house tomatoes. But the Farmers Market ones taste THE BEST!
I try to always buy my produce at the local farmers market. It's great because it's in season and fresh. Not all vendors there grow organically.
I did that with ketchup once. It was the sweetest ketchup I've ever tasted, and it was the lowest in sugar, too. And sure enough, the label said "organic." I've never had the opportunity to taste organic produce, but this makes me eager to.
Certain organic fruits taste way better in my opinion. I don't even bother with non-organic apples or pears anymore because the organic taste is far superior. Some fruits like bananas can be bought non-organic because pesticides don't leach into their skin anyway. This List gives you some others (compared to this list with foods you should always buy organic!)
I'm with trendstudent. I shop the local farmer's market for as long as possible. (We're too far north to have year-round produce.) I have no idea whether it's organic or not, but the produce fresh from the farmers is *so* fresh and miles yummier than anything you can find at the grocery store.
If buying organic means you're getting fresher produce (because it doesn't have the same shelf life?), I'd believe that it tasted better.
I agree with cellophane_star that you can really taste the difference in apples (in the winter, when Canada does not grow apples). BUT, local produce is always freshest and thus tastes better.
If you're rocking the organic cauliflower, then go for it, I don't think it's crazy that you think it tastes better.
The amount of non-organic cauliflower I have let go bad in my fridge would more than make up the difference in price if it had been organic that I had actaully eaten.
When it comes to the farmers market, it doesn't matter if it is organic or not. It is freshly picked at its peak ripeness. The reason things like tomatoes do not taste good from the supermarket is because they aren't. They are picked early then have a gas sprayed on them to appear ripe. That is why they are usually pink inside instead of deep red. I grow a garden. It is by no means organic, but the produce tastes soooo much better.
I purchased an organic banana once...I love them now. The taste is so much better. Apples are the same too.
You had it right the first time, you're just imagining it.
Ok, I have a trick - might be bad but... he he... When I pick up the veggies I always take the stickers off of them - so the cashier sort of just thinks the veggies are not organic even if they are... he he he!
