Opinions Please!!!!!

I know that you don't know me but I still want all of your opinions. Here is my story......A little over three years ago I started working in the accounting department of a nationwide trucking company. When I first got hired on I had to go through a temp agency for 3 months. I got hired on for $8.00an hour. Then after 3 months I got hired on through the company. I got a 50 cent an hour raise.  I got my next 50 cent raise 22 months later. That has been 14 months ago and I don't forsee another raise for awhile if ever. My husband was hired on through the same company a yr and 1/2 ago as a general manager at a differetn location. He told me that the highest paid ofc person is only making $10.25 an hour. (Doesn't give me much hope.) What ticks me off is that the company is a MULTI MILLION dollar company but the truck drivers get more respect and better benefits than the ofc people.

Anyway, my husband came home the other night and told me that he thinks that I need to apply for another job. He thinks that I am in a dead end job. Don't get me wrong I like my job and I have the WORLD'S GREATEST BOSS!!! He is so awesome. I do have my legal secretary certificate and there is a position in the local newspaper. But that position has been in and out of the paper numerous times. So I am not sure of what I want to do.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

You can always interview for the job in the paper and try to see what you think of the climate.  Then, you have the choice to accept or not.  I think it's always easier to look for a job when you don't "need" one.  Kelly
For me, if I'm happy where I am and don't need more money, I don't see a reason to change. But then, I'm lazy by nature. =) I say, go with your gut. Do you get excited at the idea of this new job? Or do you kinda dread it?
Weigh everything carfully - pros and cons.

What is your commute?  If you get more $ but have to drive farther, does it still work out to more $. (I was goingto take a job for quite a bit more $ on paper, but it was an hour commute and I had to pay a monthly fee for parking.  I would have actually taken a slight decrease once I figured in extra gas and parking.)

How are the hours here compared to what you might find elsewhere?

How are they with vacation time/sick time, etc compared to another company you might be looking into?

Are they cool if you need to leave for your kids or are they ding-dongs about it?

Want to get a chuckle?  There are days when I really think I can't take my job one more day.  Know what a big hang up is for me?  I have my own office with a great view.  I can go in and shut out the world, turn up my tunes and work the day away.  That is a huge perk to me because prior to this, I was always in a cubicle.  I can shut my door and make a dr. call or take a call if need be.  (I don't like others hearing that stuff!) I can play music and not bug anyone.  Silly, but it's true.

I guess this isn't much help, but bottom line is there can be more to a job than the paycheck....

Well to me my job is very important.  I work to live and I live to work.  I think you have to seriously think about what you want to do.  You can change it if you want to.  Don't feel pressured, because nowadays people want to employ qualified people.  Enjoy what you have, you can choose what you want to do.  Personnally I would say follow your heart.  In the long run, it knows best.
If the same postition has been in the paper numerous times...that would be a really big red flag for me.  Why can't they keep someone in the position?

Money is nice, but it isn't going to matter how much money you make if you are not happy with your job and your work environment.  If you are really happy where you are and you can get by just fine with your salary and benefits, then I would stay.  It never hurts to look, but I would not leave a job I really liked for another one just because of the money.
hello akamom2.I had the exact problem.I used to work for this company doing production work.I made $14-$15 per hour. Then when arthritis set in from doing this job for years,i needed a change.Well how lucky can a person be.My boss offered me a job in the office and would train me starting pay $10.00.Oh so you talk excited,i was.But my happiness only lasted for a year and half.Too much stress, attitude ,and responsibility for 10.00.I was customer service, order processor.count responsibility for orders on a daily basis. So I quit...........that was a hard decision. When I came home and told my husband he was excited just as my kids were,They lived with the stress laiden mom.Now I have a partime job in retail at Big Lots.Starting pay $6 per hour...big big difference....but i am soooooooooo happy. They work with my schedule being out with my father .I learned a big lesson money is good but not everything.Sure our life style changed but hey everybody happy at my house.(If Mom Isn't happy nobodys happy)Go with your Heart and your happiness.

If you are happy that's important but if need more cash go for something else. Also as far as the drivers are concerned, they are more important and should be paid more.....after all without those drivers it would not be a trucking company.
