Any other Gluten Free PPL

Quote  |  Reply
Hey,

I've been here for awhile, and I was wondering if there were any other gluten free members trying to lose weight. I dont have Khrons (sp?) but I do have a slight sllergy, and it means when I eat anything that contains flour I bloat up and have uhh, issues flushing my system if you know what I mean.

I life in a house FULL of bread and sauce eaters (both of which contain gluten) and I was wondering if you guys could reccomend some more gluten free snacks for me?

I know you can buy all kinds of gluten free breads, and I can generally eat oatmeal if I cook it with water, but gluten free merchandise is so pricey. I'm looking more just for at home ideas.

Can anyone help?

my mom ate gluten-free for 10 years before they discovered that wasn't her problem.

she was able to find variety in her diet by eating more fruits, veggies and legumes. also, she ate a lot of rice-based things like rice noodles - which are not that much more expensive than regular noodles.

there are lots of websites out there for gluten free.. just spend some time googling and you'll find good ideas.

and, mr. christie (i think) makes rice crackers which are quite tasty :)

good luck!
Hey droevig - I'm GF too.  I'm pretty new at it.  Found out 8 months ago and am now 25 pounds lighter.  Snacks and small meals are really the hardest unless all you want to eat is veggies and fruit.  There are some alternatives in the very small GF section of the grocery store like cerial bars.  They are very hearty and taste OK.  The best noodles I have had (no one noticed they were GF) is PastaJoy.  It is in a clear bag with pink and gold graphics.  Check out your local specialty stores and Natural Living stores.  They have a lot of options and usualy will order items you would like.  They are more expensive, but like the rice bread, will last longer.

Vanilla yogurt with fresh fruit is good and lowcal.  Soups are OK if you can eat soy (vegitable oils).  Most of us with GF intolerance can't eat soy either.  Rice crispies with skim milk.  Cheese and pepperoni (but not low-cal :(    Nut-Thin Rice Crackers with chicken salad.  I eat a lot of meats, veggies, fruit, potatoes and rice.  I haven't figured out how to eat with calories in mind yet but I'm working on it.  Hope this helps.

I don't know how much more help I can be but you can ask me questions if you like.  Good Luck!
Hi,

I am gluten free as well.  Also dairy, eggs and peanuts.  It is really hard to not eat a lot of carbs..  I have a lot of different rice cakes, home made bread, and other home made snacks...  You really have to eat a lot of fruit and veg.  It is supprising what has no gluten in it.  I have not lost any weight by eating this way.  (I just found out 2 months ago).  Because it is hard from going from eating healthy to rice cakes.  Good luck!
Hi

Are you gluten intollerent or full Celiac?  I have a good friend who can not have ANY wheat.  (BTW - the Celiac society is still out on oatmeal as it can be contaminated with wheat gluten.)

I've hosted dinner parties that have been completely gluten free, including a Superbowl party (all finger foods).  There are a lot of resources on the web that provide suggested foods as well as internet retaillers who will ship gluten free bagels and pretzels (but watch - quite often the fat content on these is higher than their wheat-filled cousins).

You can make gluten-free quesadillas with corn tortillas - I think they're better than regular.  Or substitute a polenta cake for pasta under a tomato sauce.

Good luck!

Hi, I suffer from Crohn's and I've been gluten free for the past 6 months--since avoiding gluten tends to be helpful in people with IBDs.  This website http://www.csaceliacs.org/recipes2.php?catid= 7 has plenty of gluten free recipes that you may find helpful.  Oh, and if you have a Whole Foods Market in your area they will print out a full gluten free shopping list so you can shop easily.  Hope this helps.

I have Celiac disease and have been gluten free for almost two years now.  (Probably more like 85% gluten free, but better than it was!)  I have found that cooking things myself makes it easier than if I try to buy the items.  Unfortunately most of the prepackaged goodies are loaded with gluten!  If you Google "gluten free recipes" it will show you lots of websites with lots of recipes!  You should be able to find a recipe for whatever type of snack you like.

As for the bread machine question:  I like the Bob's Red Mill gluten free bread mix.  It comes in a bag with a packet of yeast and baking instructions.  It can also be made in the oven.  It is delicious, even if you don't have Celiac or other gluten sensitivity!

Good luck!

Most of my family has a gluten and dairy allergy. Authentic ethnic food is your friend; especially Asian varieties. My favorites are  Thai and Vietnamese -- can't go wrong with a good lettuce wrap!  Also, a favorite for me is Mexican food-- you can find corn tortillas and use them for tacos, chips, tostados and many other dishes.  Salsa is always a safe bet too.

There's other cultures where rice or corn is the focus of the meal. Just do a little research.

Watch out for sauces and read every label. Odd things like chicken broth, soy sauce and tomato paste sometimes have added wheat products.

I'm gluten free too, have been for almost 4 years now.  The hardest thing, I think, is that most gluten free foods are not necessarily healthy.  Watch out for the white rice and white rice flour, which is as bad as white regular flour.  I live at Whole Foods, but Bob's Red Mill has a lot of gluten free stuff that you can buy online, that offer whole grain gluten free options, too.  Processed gluten free is as bad as processed regular foods so when trying to lose weight, you have to be careful and really do your homework.  There are quite a few good cookbooks out there and google searches will help a lot, as well.  I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have.  Good luck!

i'm gluten free too...i lost a lot of weight initially, like 20 pounds...but I gained 10 of it back now that i've found different foods to eat.

You should check out a web site called living without.

They have all kinds of gluten free food.  Also check out

foodintol.com .. 65 percent of all women over the age of 50 can not digest gluten. as we age we do not have the enzymes to digest the gluten.  The weight issue is not menopause .... it is wheat and dairy .. gluten and casien
beware soy sauce (has wheat), and the free chips they give you at mexican places.  They are not always just made with corn flour (who knew, right?!?!)

Carmel rice cakes with peanut butter is a fave snack, also popcorn, hardboiled eggs

I have found the only cereal that doesnt cost $100 that i can have is fruity pepples.  Not the most healthy option, but great when i have had nothing but eggs.

I STRONGLY recomend waiting several months before trying gluten-free breads, cookies, etc., as you will not find them near as tasty if you have just started living sans-gluten.  There is a fantastic blog at

 glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/

that was a tremenous help to me when i found out (last december).  She has fantastic pictures and recipes that make you feel like you are eating normal food.  Good luck!
hey!!!
droevig.. I have the EXACT same problem as you! You know how most celiacs have the opposite problem.. gluten makes them rush to bathroom all the time? Well my brother is a celiac and I didn't test positive. But when I cut gluten out of my diet.. my life changed! I'm happy you are here ha.

Yeah i agree with most people here that there are a lot of resources on the internet. I have found when it comes to cooking and having dinner parties, the best way to go is mexican food.
