Any other homeschoolers?

Quote  |  Reply

My name is Kieron, I'm 17 and new to the site. I'm a junior and homeschooled and wondered if there were any other homeschoolers on here. The curriculums I'm using right now are Math-u-See, Apologia, LifePacs, Switched-on-Schoolhouse and a literature curriculum that I'm kind of constructing as I go. My favorite subjects are Literature and Science, but Math is growing on me now that I actually understand what they're talking about. :-)

How about you?

Hi, I'm new to CC (about 4 days here) and I've been homeschooled since 5th grade. I'm 17 and in 11th grade now. Schools around here (in Oklahoma) apparently don't allow homeschooled kids to do sports but i' m on a homeschool volleyball team. I mainly use Abeka curriculum (except for bible, i skip that part). I like the actual studying part of being homeschooled, but i miss the friends. Most people in my homeschool group are a bit strange.

That last bit made me laugh. XD My old home school group and I grew up together, and I think we made each other strange.

Picklepug31,

I've never heard of a college turning someone down for being homeschooled, not even in California. I *have* heard of people being prejudice against homeschoolers and 'stretching the truth' to convince students out of it. So, just be careful. If I were you I'd look into the colleges directly. Thomas Aquinas College (Santa Paula), The Master's College (Santa Clarita), Biola University (La Mirada), and Westmont College (Santa Barbara) are all reported to openly accept homeschoolers by THIS website. Also, eHow.com has testified "More than 900 colleges nationwide, including many rated as 'highly selective,' regularly admit homeschooled students. In many ways, the homeschool experience helps your child stand out from the masses."

The Home School Legal Defense Association says, "In 1996 HSLDA conducted a nationwide college survey sampling the homeschool admissions policies in all 50 states. This survey revealed that although many colleges eagerly accepted homeschoolers, just as many had not formulated any policies regarding homeschool admission, and were confused about the legal issues involved."

Hi, i've been homeschooled  all my life (my mom  didn't like the school system.)

i've using Charlotte  mason  right now. in the past my mom tried to get me to use SOS but i told i didn't want to (i'm really stubborn.) but she  bought it anyway but i didn't use use it so i had to do the third grade twice. and i've used lifepacs.

and right now i'm in seventh grade.  My favorite subjects are math, reading and art. Love being homeschooled cause two hours and i'm done with and i knew this girl who was in public school and she was a grade ahead of me and while she was doing pre-algrebra, i was doing algrebra. I'm always asked if i do school year round (which i'm not, thank god.) and if i get to wear my pj's while i do school (which i doCool.) and restless_girl my mom is with you, she doesn't push to hard, i think she has given up cause she said that next i'm just going to study for my GED, which means then just have to study some other test (my sat's i think.) after next year if i pass.

okay i'm just talking alot,  but i am so surprised and happy that are other homeschoolers on here.Smile

Hey!

My name is Karen. I did one year in private school and the rest homeschooled.  I'm in eighth grade, and next year I finally get to go to public school. I am so excited.  I use ACE program, and I'm not to thrilled for it haha.  Math and Spelling are my favorite subjects, but science is a pain.

hey im 13 im doing homeschool next year because public school is not a good experience and is not efficient. I love art but as a core  subject math and english are pretty awesome.

This is so crazy that there is a forum for homeschoolers! I'm 18 and a senior (woot woot!) and I've been home schooled since the end of 3rd grade. Home schooling has been pretty good but when you start high school it becomes really hard (not just the work but life and home schooling in general). Plus you have to do more learning on your own, or at least I did because my mom has to work and we're in a single parent environment right now. I do think there is a lot of hatred towards home schoolers while applying for college, at BYU (first place I applied)  you have to have at least a 27 ACT score to even be considered and your GPA is not taken into account at all. But I'm going to BYU-Idaho in the Fall so it's no biggie.  Oh and I agree the home school questions are annoying, i.e. "Oh, home schooling...... do you like it?" How many hours a day do you do work? that's so cool.... you get to wear your pajamas to school! It's so stupid.

I am not home schooled anymore, since now I am in college. Well I was homeschool for part of my 10th grade year and I graduated my 11th grade year because I did independent study/home school. I love it more than school, I think I will home school my kids if they don't like high school or middle school because basically its just a bunch of drama, and I hated it. I was so happy to grad early, and now I am in college and going to be an Auto Body Technician :] Debating between taking a management class or trim and upholstery class right now :] BUT basically if I take that management class I will be an Auto Body Technician, and have a certificate for that and I will have my associates degree :] anddd it would only take me 9 months :] So basically when I graduate I will be 18 and 3 months WHOOOP MEEE :]

Well kids, I'm actually an adult now, but I WAS homeschooled from kindergarten through 7th grade (erm, 1989-1997...yeah, I'm old). It's so fun for me to read all of your posts. Back when I was a homeschooled kid, the internet was NOTHING like what it is today, so we were much more isolated from "the world."

I wasn't one of those bun-and-long-jean-skirt-wearing homeschoolers, but I definitely wasn't as cool as all of you guys :) I absolutely hated being homeschooled at the time and thought it basically ruined my chances of ever being "normal", but I think I turned out fine. I went to public high school, made tons of friends, and was wayyy ahead of most of my classmates academically. I ended up being valedictorian! Now I'm glad I was homeschooled...I think it's made me a more quirky, interesting and well-rounded individual :)

I'm kinda homeschooled. I go to a virtual school. So my parents don't do anything and it's all the computer.

I've been homeschooled since 9th grade, finishing tenth now.

I don't really like it just because I'm not motivated.

I'm going to switch back to a real school next year once I'm 16 and I have more schooling options. I'm probably going to go to Lifeskills, which is almost the same, but you go to a building everyday for 3 hours to do work. I'm hoping I'll do better there.

i wish that i was homeschooled! i tried to get myself in a program last year, but then i was advised (by my counselor) that colleges in california don't look at homeschooled kids' transcripts, which i thought was a load of bull. so i didn't do it.

i really want to graduate early. im taking a course of math at the local community college over the summer to get a couple college credits.

my mom wanted me to homeschool too, so i could graduate early and get a job before i went to college to help with expenses. but then the news about the whole "colleges dont accept the homeschooled" came to  our attention.

actually, i've read that most colleges LOVE homeschoolers because of our great work ethics ;) of course that can't be said for EVERYONE. i know some homeschoolers who sit on their asses all day doing nothing. but in general it's true.
