Do any other teenagers find it hard to eat healthy??
If you do, why do you find it hard to eat healthy?? Thanks!!
Have you ever offered to go grocery shopping for them? or tag along with them?
You could get what they like, then get what you want.
I ALWAYS go grocery shopping with them...
But we have dinner as family so our dinners have to be apporoved by my dad and like I said he says fruit is too expensive so we never buy it...
Bananas are very cheap all year round. He can't say they are expensive. Whatever is in season is usually really cheap. Just try and show him that it can be cheap. He may just not like fruit so thats why he doesn't want to buy it.
Hmm...dinner is tough because thats what your parents make for you. Do you have any money? You could always go to the store by yourself and pick up some baby carrots, fruit, whatever to snack on before dinner so atleast you are getting some kind of veggie/fruits.
Nope no money, no job, no allowence...
Yeah you are probably right he just dosen't want to buy fruits because he does not like them :)
i find it a little hard at times to eat healthy because of family. my mom and grandma can basically eat whatever they want, and stay thin, so they don't care that much about health or calories. i got my slower metabolism from my dad's side of the family -_-
oh my gosh...yes!! my ENTIRE family is stick thin and eats the most unhealthy foods. when i ask my mom to get oatmeal and fruit and stuff she tells me we already have a lot of food like cocoa puffs, high-fat cereal bars, and chocolate. my main problem is the fact that all the easy snack foods are SO bad for you and they are so tempting. UHH!! what i have been doing recently (this is really bad i know) is taking 5 or 10 dollars from my mother's purse and buying my own stuff (at least my own snacks that dont require refrigeration.) also, im my high school has a great salad bar and lots of fruit so i make sure that i have an apple and a banana at school as well as some carrots. but yea...the way my family eats drives me crazy!
Sounds like you're in a pretty awful situation. And I guess they'd get mad if you pointed out that eating healthier is less expensive than dealing with health problems down the line? I mean, I'd suggest a sit-down heart-to-heart with a good fitness book, but I know those can get iffy with family 'cause it might seem like you were calling your dad fat or something.
All I can say is that if you're eating unhealthy food be really careful with portion control, don't eat too much of it.
Do you have a good friend whose family eat better you can visit for supper? Or, if you feel comfortable opening up to friends, can you sometimes trade the odd cookie for a piece of fruit from their lunch? Not the same friend all the time, but if you made it a team effort you could probably share lunches and each get a balanced meal. I'm assuming you don't have cash for the school cafeteria?
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. Tough spot you're in. :(
Edited after looking at some of your other posts: But it looks like you're not at too bad of a weight right now. I think it's good that you want to eat healthier foods, get more veggies, etc. but make sure you're doing it to be healthy, not skinny (er), okay? Starving yourself won't help.
And I've just had a thought, maybe speak to your doctor about this at your next appointment? There's a chance she/he might speak to your family for you, or put you on a vitamin at least.
As an economic sticken adult and parent, wouldve appreciated this 'dilemna' from my daughter before she moved in with her dad as she never wanted the good, always seeking the junk.
If you havent, tried approaching this two fold. First validating his concern about the cost of produce and healthier food as well as it not so much being your preference but knowing that you should be eating healthy foods. Than see if you cant make him part of the solution by getting his thoughts.
Let him know your willingness to find savings within like seasonal fruits and be willing to point out savings as they occur. For examples, the apples are down to $1 lb (locally) so that he still is filling his mental saving money. Also be willing to go store brand name for things like brown rice, wheat breads, etc. The more you make him aware your conscious of his concerns, the more open he'll probably be to your own.
With her junk food requests, my daughter would do this to me in the store - brininging me an item, telling me the price, sometimes the price of a comparable item showing me the savings often with a Walmart brand. She new how to sell me even if it wasnt the food I'd prefer for her.
thats my biggest problem lol my family eats horrible. I live in a house with 3 younger kids who eat reeses cups and fruit snacks as their main meal. And then i get yelled at whenever i ask my mom to buy healthy foods
, good thing im moving out and on my own in 26 days :)
bree9643 - I don't know where you get that I am trying to starve myself because that is NOT true!!
I didn't mean to offend you - I've just noticed that you already have a healthy BMI and wear a size 0 jean and are looking to lose more weight. I'm just a little concerned as to why you want this; if you're doing it for the right reasons, great.
Yeah I now what your talking about. My older brother and younger sister are both really picky eaters so all my brother eats is salty things like cheezits(he eats like a whole box in a couple days) chips, granola bars, pizza, white rice, crackers, popcorn and he snacks all day long! Then, theres my sister.. shes worse! I always try to get her to try new healthier things and shes like I've already tried that and I don't like it, which I know for a fact she hasn't tried it! But she eats pizza, ice cream, spaghettios, sweets and it seems like everyday she stops liking one of the healthy things she used to like!
Then, there is my mom always trying to get me to eat butter! Which I don't like! She's like it doesn't hurt to eat a little fat.. yeah I know it doesn't hurt to eat a LITTLE fat, which I do, but not when you put half a stick of butter in with the veggies! But, my mom is definitely the next healthiest in my family compared to me. Since I have been talking to her about healthier alternatives, etc. she has sort of tried to lose some excess weight too and she atleast considers making things healthy :)
And my dad.. he is really tall and eats sooo much!! He always buys chips and soda and ice cream or he wants to order pizza or food from this Italian restaurant near by..
So, yes sometime I do find it hard to eat healthy with the way my family eats. But in all reality my family eats alot healthier than most.
lol. long post :P
I feel you! My family is all healthy and thin. They eat all kinds of food including the unhealthy stuff. My brother has IBS but his metabolism is crazy so he eats EVERYTHING. My mom freaks out every now and then if she sees me 'being healthy'.
i do!
my parents are the kind who dont really bother about what they eat being healthy or not :/ and more often than not, they'd make me eat along with them.
usually i'd be able to resist the temptation, but when im starved and they shove the high fat and cal content food in my face.... ):
parents oughtta learn how to eat healthy along with their kid
Umm, it used to be harder until I discovered the joys of cooking and developed a little willpower and self-control xD
My family on the otherhand still eats plenty of junkfood, frozen dinners and (in my sister's case) plenty of fatty desserts from the coffee pub she works at.
To try to get them to eat healthier, I started cooking dinner a few nights a week (time permitting) and just trying new ways to prepare veggies. My mom has even admitted on how she used to hate things like green-beans (or most vegetables, since her mother boiled them to mush) and lentils but now has found a taste for them because of how they were prepared. If you've got the time you could always try making them a healthy feast... they buy it, you cook it sort of deal xD
