Ounces of beef
Is the ounces of beef given here on CC before the beef is cooked or after? My steak looks to be about half the size it was now compared to before I cooked it!
Thanks :)
It depends. If it has a cooking method after it (roasted, broiled, stewed), then it's the weight after cooking. If it doesn't mention a cooking method it's raw. I always weigh my proteins after cooking, because they lose mass, and my veggies and grains before cooking as they absorb moisture and can fluctuate greatly. Such as a boiled potato or oatmeal or even pasta.
Blah, I guess this means I need to get a food scale. I've been living without one and it's proved to be a problem. I just used the weight before cooking. Though that probably ended up being wrong. Oh well, I'd rather overestimate than underestimate calories
You could also log the weight raw. I do that with meat all the time - I weigh the meat raw and log in the raw amount. If I can't find the raw amount in the database, then I add it in cooked - and at the most you overestimate by 1 oz (typically a 4 oz serving of protein loses about 1 oz of water when cooked).
But I agree, a food scale is something that I could not live without - essential for counting calories, IMO :)

The weight might be wrong but the calorie count will be about the same. The weight that is lost from meat while cooking is mostly water. Some cuts might lose fat, but lean cuts are pretty much the same after cooking.
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
