Any over 40's out there!

Quote  |  Reply

You know you hear it all the time.  "The older you get the harder it is to lose wieght." or "It will caught up to when hit your 30's"  It is a well known fact that as your metabolism slows down.  I've only been on this website 4 days and I have looked around some but didn't come across anything yet for some of us older ones trying to lose wieght!  I was just on find your twin and noticed that mostly younger crowd signing in there. Couldn't go through 90 pages to find some my age.  Thought I'd start a thread to find a buddy of similiar age and stats geared to motivate those of us with the Age challenge.

So here is mine

AGE: 45

Height 5'3 or 5'4 (been a while since I measured my self)

Wieight: 206lb

Build: Large (I think by the wrist test)

Weight Goal:135 -

Non Weight Goal - Working out 5 times a week doing at least 30-60 minutes of cardio or swimming and weights 2-3 times a week for 40 minutes,

Anyone out there that is similiar and would like to work at motivating each other!

Hi,

I hate getting on the scale - it is just too much pressure for me. I mean way too much pressure. I only get on when I am fairly certain the news will be good.

I am sure a book could be written about the personalities and their scale habits. I don't know what it says about me.

Well, today, I went running with my husband on the trails near our house. We live in Portland, OR and there is a really huge old growth park (the largest park in the US within city boundaries...) I ran up two hills that are pretty steep and did it at a fairly good clip like 10 min/mile. What was interesting is that my husband was shocked because normally I complain and he asked what was going on and I just said well, that's what losing 12lbs will do for ya!

My running was the original reason why I decided to finally lose weight - I saw this woman zip up this hill that I was struggling on and figured well golly if she can do it then I can as well. So now I am doing alot better on hills.

We are headed to the Oregon Coast this weekend. Should be nice and hot which is a welcomed change! Our winter was terrible.

Take care.

I'm trying to stay away from the scale. I want to go by the inches I lose.

I use to be a runner when I was younger. That's completely out of the question now with my back and leg pain. :( Good job on making it up the hill!!!! And have a nice trip cawilder!!!

Hi guys,

Checking in again and doing better staying on track.  Started to get a routine down with walking about 45 min a day but Saskatoon is just so flat.  I am trying to keep the pace up to make the difference from the hills. (I never could run the hills even when I weighed less and admire those who could>)

My friend and I are really trying to stay on track with the eating and that help.  I having problems with weighing in as her scale weighs me heavier but I can't quite tell how much.  I weighed in for the BL challenge but it was 208 on Tues and today it was 207.5 so I am trying not to get too depressed with having to go down the same numbers as 3 weeks ago.

Like you gus I'm trying not to be so scale obsessed but what can I say I still have to have my fix at least 2x/week.

Have a great weekend

Jen

Jen - when weighing in for the BL Challenge I'd just pay attention to how much you lose. Not the number. That might help you.

Everyone have a nice weekend! Laughing

Hi,  count me in!  I am back to exercising and calorie counting after a too busy spring combined with a frequently ill little one and a rebound of 6 pounds.  My stats

Married 23 years (on July 26th) with 6 children.  22yo, almost 20yo, 16yo, 13yo, 6yo, and the little one who will be 18mos on the 20th of July.

Me:

44yo

5'1"

143 pounds (was losing before pg and was at 139 then was at 177 the week she was born)

Goal:  110 (more than when I got married, but way less than I am now)

I am trying to get to the YMCA 4-6 times per week alternating between aerobic conditioning and weight training.

I'm glad I found this thread and am going back to read it all.

Hi Lakemom! Nice to meet you! I have 2 kids (21 and 15) and that's enough for me! I don't know how you do it! I'm 43, 5'6" and married almost 13 yrs. Did you actually read it all????

Well, I've been good lately. No eating at night and I'm losing more weight. 4 lbs gone in the last 2 wks. YAY MEEEE!!!!Laughing

Going to the gym tomorrow and dragging my 15 yr old with me! I planned on going today but it was just way too hot.

I go to a small gym w. no AC!!! You read it right!!!  All they have are fans everywhere. It's like a warehouse type building thats tin. But they have this huge garage door they open and usually get a breeze thru it. But it was 96 degrees today. So I didn't go. Besides, my son has asthma and there was one of those alerts for today.

wll, check in tomorrow!

I just joined CC tonight! What a great place! I have two children, ages 15 and 17, and have been married 20 years. I work full-time plus. I have always had to be food and exercise conscious, as I have always been prone to gaining weight.  I have no experience with "communities" but am eager to learn and to find a buddy.

I have been hovering between 139 and 133 for the past year and haven't been able to break the 130 mark. My goal is to get back into shape and weigh no more than 125. I am very undisciplined when it comes to anything that requres consistency --I thrive on change and variety. I know, however, that discipline is what it will take for me to achieve my goals. Thus I would love a motivation partner.

I cook for my family daily, eat very healthfully, but just too much. Nibbles, tastes and seconds get me!

AGE: 49, and reluctantly counting down to 8.8.08 on which day I turn 50!

Height: 5'0

Weight: 139 lb

Build: Large (according to wrist test)

Weight Goal:125, though CC says I should be 115. I'll decide if I want that goal after I achieve the first one.

Non Weight Goal - Working out 5 times a week doing at least 30-60 minutes of cardio or swimming and weights 2 times a week for 30 minutes...and to never eat standing!(my weakness)

Anyone out there that is similiar and would like to work at motivating each other?

Did you actually read it all????

LOL...I did!!  I was avoiding going outside in the heat of the day and dh was off at his Air Force Reserve weekend and the older kids were parked in front of the playstation.

I did get out in the evening and get all my weeding and mulching done.  Gotta go today and get another load of mulch to finish up.

Age:  46

Weight: 220

Goal Weight:  135 - but it seems so out of reach.

Non Weight Goal:  To get more active.

I have been struggling with my weight for years.  I know that my real problem began when I went to night school and was finally able to get an office job.  It was that office job I took 11 years ago that started this whole downward spiral from losing, gaining more, losing again, gaining more.  My husband and I bought a industrial supply company and my job is a little more active, but I am still sitting at my desk 7 out of 9 hours a day.

I know my biggest obstacle  is motivating myself to exercise.  I would love to have someone to walk with.  Anyone from Wheeling W???

Thanks for posting this thread PJ...I agree...most of the posts on this site are from 20 somethings. It's nice to know that I'm not the only 40ish female on this site. That said, let me introduce myself...

Hi everyone,

My name is Bea, and I'm writing to you from Long Island, New York. I'm 47 (YIKES!), 5'2" @ 140 pounds. My goal weight is 120 and I'm hoping to get there by Christmas. I have a very supportive husband, but would love to share advice and strategies with someone of my own gender. Chat me up, I love to meet new and interesting people!

Good luck to you all!

Hi all - Hope everyone is having a good weekend.  I can't say I was very good at all!  Had a girls day yesterday that started with a day spa and dinner out at night. Ate too much and drank too much so I'm afraid to get on the scale today. I'm going to go swimming today and hopefully work some of it off!

I was a bit disappointed though.  I haven't seen a few of these girls I was with in weeks and one even months, and NO one really commented on my weight loss.  When we were talking later and I mentioned CC then one girl said, oh yea you did lose weight.

I just hope I'm not fooling myself thinking I look better than I do.  I just feel so good about the direction I'm heading, don't want to lose that motivation!

Welcome to all the new people!  This is a great group.

Bea - always good to have another New Yorker on the thread - I live on Long Island also

Healthy - Hi! And Welcome! I'm another nibbler and taster when I'm cooking! But I have stopped that alot. I get my kids to do the tasting for me and rely on their taste buds! i guess that could be dangerous! lol

lakemom - That was alot of reading! I've skipped thru threads, but not actually read every single one! lol  My son plays alot of PS2. Mostly at night though. Mulching! I hate that!!!

sandy - Hello! And welcome to you too! You can reach your goal! Maybe set a shorter goal for now that you can get to sooner. That's what I do. I started at 236 lbs in Oct and my 1st goal was to get to 199 lbs, now it's 160 lbs. And reward yourself when you get there. I tend to reward myself alot! hehehehe Wheeling WVa? I live close to there if that's what you meant.

Bea - Welcome to you too! Lots of new people this weekend! :)  There are alot of "young" people on here, but I've found alot of 40 somethings also. Are you just beginning your weight loss? 20 pounds is really not much to lose at all! You'll get there in no time. Just use all this site has to offer and ask for help as much as you need it. We are here to help as much as we can!!! :)

Missykris - sometimes people just don't "see" that you've lost weight unless it's a huge amount. Heck, I've lost 60 lbs and still some people say nothing! So you aren't alone there. Give yourself a couple days before getting on the scale for the sodium to leave. You may not have gained at all.

Now for me....I'm back down to my lowest weight I've been in this whole losing weight journey. I'm so happy now. Weighing in at 177.6!  Now I just have to keep on going lower and lower. 170 here I come!!! YAY!!!

Hi and welcome to all the new members.

I echo Momof2FunyKids has said - create some interim goals and celebrate those goals (not with food.. perhaps)

Getting motivated for exercise is difficult but I used to make it such and event that it was difficult and now it is more a part of my life. I use my schedule and I block out times that I am going to run or go to the gym and I send that schedule to my husband so he knows.

Also, don't get stuck in a rut for exercise - like you go to the gym and you do a 1/2 hour walking on the treadmill and then you use the 5lb weights -- mix it up and challenge your self. You need to change your workout and make it harder every 2 to 4 weeks to make it effective. Don't HURT yourself - if you were walking 2 mi - try doing it at an incline of 2 for 1mi.

Also, read the fitness magazines - like Shape or Women's Health -- you don't have to buy them - you can go to their websites and get lots of tips.

CC also has lots of info and tips and knowledge so you can use the search engine if you know what you are looking for.

I was 260 and thought that it was a very far road and while it has been a far road I have learned alot about myself and others. It has taken me about 4 years to get to 190 but I know that I am not going back.

My weight loss and exercise has allowed me the opportunity to run up a trail this weekend (really steep) and get to the point where they think that William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) stood and surveyed the Pacific Ocean at Tillamook head. It was spectacular.

Accept your stumbles as well and move on. Think about why they happened and get on with your life and try to remember what triggered it. I worry incessantly about money - just do. So when I get a curve ball on the money front I head straight to any comfort food that will make me feel ok, now I am really trying hard to deal with those feeling by stopping, acknowledging, and determine what else I could do that would make me feel better.  It's a process... I am not perfect yet.

Well, this has gone on longer than I intended. I hope it helps.

Oh, and yes there are alot of 20's on here but there are still alot of us "older" folks.

SMILE and have a great day!

CAwilder - saw your note about running.  I too am bothered by others as they zip up hills and I struggle.  Trying to loose weight to run better.  Yesterday was exhausting as I think I overdid it.  I struggled to walk home.

AGE: 46

Height 6'2"

Wieight: 231lb but now at 227

Build: Medium to Large

Weight Goal:180

Non Weight Goal - Working out 5 times a week doing at least 30-60 minutes sounds good.

anyone tried www.mapmyrun.com  ??  It is very interesting finding other peoples runs.

ktjensen,

I have adopted the ultra marathoner's attitude - it is just one step in front of the other and keep moving forward - if that means walking then that is what you do.  One of the main reasons that I started to get serious about losing weight - was seeing a woman zip up a hill that I was struggling on. But when my husband and I go on these "adventure" runs it is not how fast or what our time is - it is the pure joy of just being out and moving.

I would also go for time when I run vs. distance.

I have used mapmyrun for runs around my work where I don't know things as well. There is a 6 miler near my work that is hills hills hills so I only do it when I have lots of time.

Another thing - tank up before running. Eat something about 1-2 hour before - small but incorporating protein,  carbs... It does make it easier to run and you don't feel so loggy and slow. But make it part of your overall eating plan.

I have a problem with early morning runs because I have not had time to eat and so I grab about a 1/3 portion of a clif bar as I am getting ready.  I also drink lots of water.

Hope this helps.

Weighed in midafternoon for the week.  Still at 144 :( But I added weight training to my routine this week AND way overate on the weekend so I'm not too disappointed (and frankly glad it didn't move in the wrong direction).  Now, if the scale doesn't budge next week, I'll start feeling aggraveted.

My goals this week are to hit the YMCA 5 mornings this week alternating weights and cardio (I did weights today).  To figure out my calories and stick with counting the calories.  I'm having trouble with what to put the the activity level plus I'm still nursing my youngest so I'm just not sure how many calories are used by that.  I'll be doing some research on kelleymom and LLL this week to try and figure that out.

How's everyone else doing?

Lakemom - I know you need ALOT of calories while you nurse. I put my activity level at Sedentary and add my exercise to get more of an accurate burn number. I know alot of people do that on here.

I had a good day. I ate well and stayed within calorie limits, went to the gym, snacked on fruit (grapes mostly), and I feel good tonight.

Staying away from the cookies hubby says he bought "just for me". Thumbprint cookies are soooooo good!!!  He got alittle upset that I said I wasn't eating them. So I'll give them to the neighbor kids over the next couple days and tell him I ate them! He'll never know. He sleeps all day and works all night. hehehehe I know I'm sneaky, but what else can I do???? I'm certainly not leaving them in the house. Too much temptation!

Have a good nite. I'll check in tomorrow!

I am an adamant advocate of health and fitnes.  Currently I am studying under the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a personal trainer.  I am a 42 year old mother of 4 and has integrated health and fitness as a way of life.  Although, I do not suffer with obstacles as it relates to weight, it would be most pleasurable to help anyone that needs assistance.  I mentor to many persons and truly understand the struggles.  However, in order to maintain a healthy life style, one must make it a lifestyle/mindset - - not only as it pertains to the body, but rather the mind, body and soul.  I know this may sound a bit cliched', but it is truly a reality.

In my spare time I write articles on Health and Fitness.  For leisure reading visit mbodyment.com.  Additionally, I have recently created a social forum for fit persons 40 and over.  Again, fitness realtes to the body, mind and soul.   So for persons that would like to tell the world about their weight loss and is feeling fabulous, go to fitand40.ning.com.

Hi Ladies,

Feeling a little better today, I finally lost a pound! Woohoo! I've been a very good girl staying at my recommended 1200 calories, not really feeling hungry, and walking for 30 - 90 minutes per day. Sunday we went for a hike on the Walt Whitman Trail in Huntington...we were there for 3 hours! That doesn't seem like a lot for a hike, but when you're a newbie, it is, not to mention that we were there from 12-3, the hottest part of the day. It wasn't too terribly hot, there were plenty of trees to keep us shaded. Anyway, back to my rant...I've worked so hard for the last week and a half and hadn't seen ANY results, I was getting very frustrated! For the last couple of days I hit around 1300 - 1350 calories and I lost my first pound. Not sure if it will stay off or not. :( Enough about me!

How is everyone today?

Tammy - Wanna send me some of those cookies? I hope they aren't raspberry filled! Mmmmmmm!
