Overboard Trans Fats Consumption -- AHHHHH!!!

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, so yesterday I "accidentally" but not really ate about 11 grams of trans fat in fries...that was basically my lunch. i knew it was bad for me but i didnt realize the TRANS FAT level was that high :(
And then the day before someone had a party and i ate about an 1/8 slice of pie, crust and all, which was another 3 grams of trans fat
(P.S i usually eat fairly healthy)

I'm just wondering what effect this few days worth of massive trans fat consumption will have on my body?
Does trans fat stay in your body forever?  How long will it stay in my body?

I feel horrible now :(

Its probably psychological i hope, but i feel like my arteries are clogged now o_o
oh, im 17 by the way.

Relax and don't over-dramatise.... transfats aren't great for you but they aren't going to kill you overnight either.  My gran seemed to tuck down vast amounts of trans-fat-laden biscuits but still managed to make it to a vigorous 97 before popping the clogs.

Really risky things like smoking have a much higher hit-rate than transfats and people can even do that for years before suffering any noticeable ill-effects.....

A few pastries are not the end of the world.... Enjoy.

Um. Yeah. You'll be ok. Eating 11 grams of trans fats is not exactly a binge... Your body will metabolize the calories from the trans fats the same way as other fat grams. And, no they do not stay in your body forever.

The risk in eating them?-Over time, diets high in saturated and trans fats have been shown to lead to elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol levels which are associated with increased risk for heart disease. Also, foods that contain trans fats are generally just not healthy foods to begin with, they are low fiber, pastries, fried foods, etc. So, it's not just the trans fats that are the problem with those foods. If you removed the trans fat from those french fries and pie, they would still be relatively poor dietary choices...

What you need to be concerned with is not one meal, but overall, eating a healthy diet which includes lots of whole foods (fruits, veges, grains), moderate amounts of lean protein and healthy fats coming from primarily monounsaturated sources.

As a dietitian, I would suggest you continue to educate yourself about health and nutrition, but make sure you are learning from credible, research based resources.

ok, thanks

yes, i didn't say anything about a binge.

i was just wondering if eating a ton of trans fat in a couple of days (like just for example, if you had a really bad week where you ate like 10 grams per day) will affect your health, even though normally you eat a minimal amount of it..maybe 1 gram per day sometimes, usually less.
because someone told me that trans fat is really hard to get out of your body.  does it still burn like other fat? im not talking about weight loss here, im talking when i reach my goal weight, will the trans fat still be sitting in me?

It takes years for the consistent over-consumption of transfats (or salt, sugar, alcohol) to make a difference to your body.  Bodies are exceptionally good at getting rid of nasties and it's only prolongued over-use that can cause problems.  And the main problem caused is elevated LDL cholesterol levels, not the same thing as 'transfats sitting in the body'.  But even raised cholesterol levels aren't automatically a terrible thing.....  If someone has high cholesterol levels but is a healthy weight and very active they are not necessarily in line for a heart-attack.  If they have high cholesterol levels, they're badly overweight, never take exercise... different story all together.

Do try to understand 'risk' in the right context..... The risk to your health of eating lots of fatty foods every day for a week is microscopic compared to many other things you do without thinking.
