overeat and not gaining? Possible?

Quote  |  Reply
Ok, here is the deal. Last weekend, I had a majot overeat...over 2000 calories and all. After than, on weekdays I ate normally anywhere from 1300-1700. And I have notice myself overeat many times! Still, when I get on the scale, I didn't gain any. So I was thinking why? Can I overeat a little and not gaining any weight or is that mean I can eat more without worrying that I'll gain weight?

By the way, I'm 5"1 and 106 pounds. And I'm 16.

Thanks

An overeat one day a week usually doesn't effect the scale too much. In fact, one overeating day can actually boost your metabolism. I wouldn't suggest eating so much every day, however. The fact that you were eating normally on weekdays probably saved you.

Your body is growing and probably can metabolize the extra calories, especially if you are moderately active. I'm 5.3 and 40 years old -- which equates to a much slower metabolism than yours at 16 -- and I can handle 2000 calorie days without gaining weight as long as I don't do it all the time. From what you've said, your weight is perfect for your size and so the game is more maintenance than losing weight. Try to auto-adjust by being a bit more careful about what you eat one day if you've overeaten the day before. And make sure the bulk of your calories are as nutritious as possible -- you need the vitamins and minerals to help your body grow and mature.

Well, i'm trying to maintain but this week I think I have over eat for a couple of time already. I mean, I excercise 3 times a week an all and I have been eating very nutritionist all the time (50 % carb and the rest are protein and fat...mostly good fat). But other than last saturday, on wednesday i also went up to 1800 calories (I usually eat around 1400 most of the day but 1300-1700 calories are the day that I vary them). And today I had already 900 calories for breakfast!! (from the mini wheat) but since they are pretty filling, I might be able to manage to have them around 1400 calories today...I'll see if I can do that!
Most people don't count calories and most people don't eat rigidly the same amount of food from one day to the next.  They'll eat more one day, a little less the next, more if they're exercising, less if they're not so active, more if it's a special occasion, less if it's a routine day.... So try to step away from counting calories and instead go with what feels right.  Check-weigh yourself once a week... chances are you'l have neither gained nor lost.  If you gain more than, say, 3lbs in a particular week maybe trim back a little. But otherwise trust your judgement.
