Does anyone here have any experience with this group?  Here is their website:  http://www.oa.org/index.htm

I was thinking of trying a meeting, but was a little intimidated.  I'd appreciate anyone who knows anything about it or has been to a meeting giving their opinion.

It sounded interesting and it's free...

Opinions?

Hello tolife-  I tried OA and can say that it was a wonderful program.  It is based on the 12 step programs.  You will get a sponsor and work through the 12 steps.  Give it a try, the people there are very welcoming so don't feel intimidated.

All I know about is that it follows the same steps as AA.

But there's some stuff I just don't believe in.  Like the fact that one has to admit that they are "powerless" over their addiction.  No one is powerless over their addiction.

Double post, sorry

Hi as mad and datta noted, it is a 12 step program.  I have actually attended a few sporadic meetings through the years.  I do feel the people are welcoming and there are some things I was able to relate to, but I never fully felt it was for me, that is why I only went to a few meetings.  Perhaps it is that somehow I don't fully get the concept.  With 12 step programs such as AA and NA abstinence is the key, but when it comes to food you can't abstain from eating.  Like any other resource out there I think it is probably right for some people and not for others.

My mom did it, lost 125 pounds, and has kept within 7 pounds of that weight for 37 years.  She is not what you would probably think of as a religious person. I would try it and see what you think. Through her, I have met many others for whom it worked great, and I have known many others that it didn't work for either. Here is what is great - doesn't cost a dime! A lot of nice people! It is a program of spiritual recovery. It does not require a belief in god, though a lot of people who do it believe in god, and they use the word god fairly frequently... I would say try it, you have plenty to benefit and little to lose.  Give it a chance, it is bound to be uncomfortable at first, I would say try 10 meetings... Who knows, maybe in 37 years you will have been at your goal weight for....  good luck!
