Has being overweight hurt you in your career path?
I'm very nervous about getting out there to get a job as an RD. Not only am I, at 58, a "non-traditional" newby, but I'm overweight: size 16 - 18.
How big [no pun intended] an obstacle is it in getting a job when you're overweight? How do you handle it?
I think it's important for every job applicant, but particularly for unconventional applicants, to "tell their story" in order to be known as individuals. An overweight dietitian with a compelling story is more desirable than one of the masses. By humanizing yourself, you might be able to deflect stereotypic judgments. I figure that, if you want to serve people, you will get a chance. Good luck.
sandrako, I would first like to second what Mary said and also add that I give you alot of credit for having the courage and drive to do what it takes to become an RD at your age.
Secondly, take some time to research and really think about what area in the vast field of nutrition you feel you would be best suited. You will not be judged based on your weight if you are comfortable in your position and skills. Your confidence and pride in yourself will reflect onto those you work with.
I can tell you that as an RD and CDE of almost 15 years, I am in no way perfect on the outside or inside, but I feel that is one of my most endearing qualities to my patients/clients. They appreciate the "human" factor and seem to feel safer knowing that in many ways I understand what they are going through because I have been there to some degree.
Good luck and congratulations on achieving that RD!
I have worked in the nutrition field for about 10 years. I've been both up and down the scale. I find that people are quick to judge my knowledge of health based upon my appearance. It's like judging a book by the cover.
