64 oz of water=torture

Quote  |  Reply

Ugh! I am having real trouble drinking 64 oz of water each day during the winter.  I just can't seem to get myself to drink more than 1 or at the most 2 glasses a day.  Any suggestions?

Crystal Light, mineral/carbonated/sparkling water, tea (hot or iced)...

If I think of anymore I'll be back!

i often drink hot water in winter.

I remember reading somewhere that you really didn't need 8 glasses of water a day and that too much water was not good for you. But things change and every nutrionist has a different opinion. Have you tried different flavors for your water? Maybe spicing it up with tea or a calorie free flavor mix will help it go down easier. I retain water really bad so drinking alot of water makes me bloat and then my kidneys are screaming. I have to drink it as tea since the small amount of caffeine helps act as a diurectic. But I still can't make it through 8 glasses either.

haha I drink like 2L of water a day. I've never understood why people don't love water like I do.

Like others said, try adding crystal light or something for now.

try hot water with lemon or herbal tea. warms/fills you up, and you get your water in!

Try keeping a water bottle with you at all times. I especially like the kind with a built in straw. If you work a desk job like I do, you can leave it open on your desk and constantly take sips as you work. You might find this less daunting than trying to down an entire glass of water every so often.

In a 32 oz water bottle, mix 16 ounces of your favorite all natural juice and the rest with carbonated water.  It's really yummy!  I also like liskies' idea with the built in straw...every time you look at the bottle you should force yourself to drink as much as you can!!  After a while, it'll be second nature to you!!  Good luck!!

Do you filter your water or drink out of the tap. I prefer water that I filter myself--the fridge pitcher and filter system. It tastes better to me than bottled and costs less, too. The grocery store brands for the little water flavoring packets have some really unique flavors. There's a wild berry from power edge and somebody makes a promegranet one that's good, too.

Hang in there. Instead of drinking 48 oz right off the bat, why not set a goal for 24 oz and work up from there?

J-mom

I used to never drink water, now I drink 100 oz a day. Here's my schedule:

one glass as soon as I get up.

One with breakfast

Sip on a water bottle in the a.m.

One with lunch

Sip on a water bottle in the afternoon

One with dinner

After I made it a habit, it's not too hard. But I remember when I started it seemed really unrealistic. So maybe just get a routine going first and then it will become easier to stick to?

Yeah, um... water is great, but unless you need to replenish that much body fluid lost, I can't think of why forcing yourself to drink 64 ounces of water would help anyone.

I have a kid - therefore a low tolerance of liquid retention - hence I absolutely do not drink that much water. If I drank 64 ounces of liquid I could never function as a normal human being... I would ALWAYS be in the bathroom. Yeah. Vaginal birth. It's that glamorous.

In general I think it's wise to drink water when you wake up & when you're thirsty; replenish your fluids after you work out; drink more water if your pee is yellow.

*shrug*

I'm having the same problem.  I dont drink enough either but I'm working on fixing that.

I read this in NYTimes "health myths" article. It seems like 8 glass theory could be overrated, they provide some tips how to determine that you are getting enough liquids:

It works for me--I don't try and suggest my way works for anyone else. I'm also 6-1 and work out intensely 5-6 times a week so I need that.

shrug.

Thanks for the input!  I'll try adding some kind of flavor to it.  Our water in Tahoe is actually really good but maybe a little flavor will help me drink a bit more...

If you wait until you are thirsty to drink water, you are already dehydrated.  You don't need to drink 8 cups of water a day.  That's only a general guideline and the amount you need to drink varies from person to person.  Generally speaking, so long as your stool is soft, you are drinking plenty of water.  If your stool is hard, you need to drink more, but you should never wait until you are "thirsty" to drink...you're already dehydrated by then.

Remember that you get water in your food and in all other drinks too...so combining all the information from above, unless you can somehow tell you're dehydrated...maybe you shouldn't worry about it?

What I've been doing is just gradually replacing my other drinks (I cut out soda completely a year or two ago and subbed juice) with water. Try that, maybe until all of your drinks per day except one are pure water.

I try to drink at least 80 oz of something a day. So it's usually a Sobe Green Tea in the morning, or water, 2 more waters, then either water for dinner or a Naked or Odwalla juice to get some more fruits.

For the past 5 days I've been sick, though - in the past three days I've gone through 7 or 8 Nakeds, 4 liters of water, 2 or 3 green teas, 2 Odwallas, and 2 hot chocolates...all that with a strep-throat style sore throat too...they confirmed it wasn't strep, but I probably have mononucleosis. XP

You can do it! =D

I don't measure how much fluids I take in each day, but am guessing it's around 48oz at work, 24 at home at night.

I have a 12oz coffee cup, and I fill it up 1/3 with coffee each time, then 2/3 of hot (or sometimes cold) water.  This moderates my caffeine intake, and also helps make sure I'm drinking plenty of water.  I generally go through four cups a day.

I'm not sure watered-down coffee is for everyone, but it works for me.  :)

i have the same problem. Water is all i drink but its hard... if you think about it!  I have a 64oz jug (soild in color) so i just fill it every morning. then put it in the fridge, then throuhg out the day i just go and pour a glass from it whenever. then at the end of the day it's gone and i end up getting more also lol. Idk if it will work for you but it really helps me.

Good news..you don't have to drink 64 oz of water a day.

People like to recommend it because more water can help you feel full between meals or even during, and help you eat less.

But you don't 'have to' drink 64 oz to lose weight or even to be hydrated enough for your health.

We get water from fruits and other things we eat, and of course water is in the juice and other beverages most of us drink, so I think most of us get enough fluid in a typical day without having to work at it.

Just drink it when you feel thirsty. As some have said, you can squeeze lemon or lime into it, use low calorie drink mixes, etc, but..don't kill yourself trying to reach the magic number of ounces.
