I'm currently taking prednesone along with about 5 antihistemines to control a hive situation I can't seem to shake and my Dr. cant figure out the source/cause of.
I've been taking prednesone for about a month or so now (3tabs every other day) and have still had a great success in losing my first 13lbs.
Just keep eating right, drinking lotsa water and working out and you should be fine! :)
Good luck with your surgery!

I gained weight the first time I was on prednisone, but was not watching what I ate or drinking enough water. Also...I lost most of my muscle tone.
Prednisone doesnt make you gain weight per say, but it increases your appetite (and it really does).
Good luck with the prednisone and the surgery, too.

I was on prednisone for a month to treat poison oak (Note to self: learn your plants before mountain biking ;-)), I gained about 5lbs, and it was from eating so much. But, I was taking 10 pills a day for 30 days, so I guess 5lbs isn't much considering....but that drug really increases your appetite, and stays in your system for a few days after you get off of it. Be careful, cuz it makes you realllllllllly moody--at least it did with me! lol (Then again, I broke my foot the day after I started the treatment....hahaha)
PS--good luck with the surgery :-)
Prednisone increased my appetite BIG TIME and I gained approximately 15lbs. I couldn't help but eat all the time. But then, once my doctor was weaning me off of it, I became depressed. That is a horrible drug, I hope I never have to go on it again!
It made me sooo moody and psycho! I pray that I too never have to go on it again. Also, did increase the appetite.
Bet of luck on the surgery!

when i took it my doc said it may cause increased appetite but didn't say it would make me gain weight. now obviously if I'm eating more b/c of hte increased appetite I probably would have gained but i didnt
bad news: you will gain weight pretty much no matter what you do because prednisone makes you retain water. It also makes you hungry.
Good news: 1. The weight gain will probably be mostly water; as long as you are reasonably disciplined you won't gain too much actual fat from just a few weeks.
2. It should come off fairly easily as you heal.
3. Depending on how long you are on them, you may not even notice the weight gain. I didn't notice a weight gain when I was on them to open up my airways (for a week), but i did notice I was a teeny bit puffy in the cheeks.

It is a huge reason I'm having to lose weight. I was on it for 9 months, and gained at least 20 lbs.
I was on Prednisone for about 6 months until they got my Rhumetoid Arthritis under control. I won't say bad things about it because I was in so much pain and was taking 2400 mg of Ibuprofen before I started on it. After I started taking it I was able to walk again..
I however did feel bloated but didn;t have any other symtoms that other people describe.. good luck on your surgery and just worry about getting your body back in healthy shape. try to eat healthy and drink plenty of water. The rest will work itself out..

Okay this may sound a bit stupid, but here it is anyway. My dog was on Prednisone...yes, my dog. Ironically for the same reason as you broncail swelling. Anyway yes she did gain weight, but she was on it for over a year, just until the 17th I think you'll be just fine. The only real immedate side effect was it made her drink a WHOLE LOT of WATER. So if you have any immedate gain I would bet on it being water weight that you'll drop as soon as you're off.
Good luck and sorry if the whole dog thing offends... I by no means am comparing you to a dog.

I've been on prednisone several times for asthma and bronchitis. Sometimes I gained and sometimes I did not or lost. Here is what worked for me to keep from gaining:
- Do be careful about what you eat. Several people mentioned mood swings. I didn't get mood swings, per se, but if I wasn't careful I would impulsively eat without thinking. Be sure to take prenisone with food early in the day
- Drink lots of water!
- Get enough sleep
- If your doctor says its OK and you feel like it, exercise. For some reason, even if weak from asthma and/or bronchitis, working in at least some exercise helped.
I actually lost 40 lbs while on Prednisone (which I promptly gained back when I went off it). While it made me retain some water, it just killed my appetite, and I literally had to force myself to eat anything.
It made me so crazy, though. I almost checked myself into the psychiatric ward because I was so manic. As soon as I stopped, though, my mood went back to normal. *chews cud*

yeah, the two times i took prednisone, i didn't want to eat anything, and i had WAY too much energy. i think i only slept about 4 hours each night that i was on it. i'm sure it just affects different people in different ways. i think everyone is right about drinking plenty of water and not changing your eating habits too much. good luck with your surgery!!
I have had to use prednisone as well for a severe allergic reaction to belladonna (its in the same family as poison oak/sumac/ivy) and it increased my appetite as well. If you understand the "why" ahead of time, then you might be able to find different ways to work around it when the increased appetite strikes. If the munchies get too hard to resist, try choosing healthier options, like veggies and fruit, or low cal stuff like rice cakes (etc).
Hope you're feeling better soon.

i was on prednisone for 8 years with just a 4 month gap in the middle. i also take 4 antihistamines (for same length of time) steriod inhalor (which in itself wont cause weight gain) and 3 different pain meds.
(sigh) And now I am here. I was never a petite person, but boy did the medication affect me.
Now i refuse to take prednisole for longer than 6 weeks (depending on severity of condition) and i am very careful what i eat to try to conteract the effects.

i really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my question.
After a couple days of seriously eating ALOT, i am carefully monitoring myself and drinking a lot of water. this stuff REALLY does increase your appetite and i've just been trying to ignore the "hungry" feeling since i know i've eaten plenty and am not really hungry.
on a side note, did prednisone give anyone wierd dreams or nightmares or am i the only one LOL?

I was on prednizone for about 18 months for a wrecked back....I literally watched myself bloat up... of course it didn't help that I was barely able to move...I gained close to 50 lbs...comfort foods accounted for only about 10...I swear I swished when I walked...I'm one of those people who retains fluid no matter what I do....I've been off the pred since 12/06 and have lost about 24 lbs so far...I hate that drug but I didn't have many other options....
No weird dreams because I'm up every 60-90 min going to the bathroom...never really get to dream...
Good luck with your surgery!
