Pain in big toe - any walkers/runners experience this?

Quote  |  Reply

Since July 2007, I've been very active - aerobics, walking, weight training (I've also lost about 67 pounds and am about 13 pounds from "healthy" BMI.  In late May of this year, I started jogging (for the first time in my life).  I found a great pair of running shoes about 6 weeks ago (Under Armor brand) that i love.  I don't run for extended periods - mainly 300 meters jogging then 300 meters walking, repeat.  Only once so far have I been able to run one mile without stopping.

About 4 days ago, I noticed a dull pain under my big toe on the left foot (it's not on the ball of my toe or the ball of my foot, but in between the two areas).  By the following day, it was very painful - to the point that I was walking on the outside of my foot to relieve the pain.  It mainly hurts when I put pressure on the area, like when my foot is rolling from ball to toe.  I've tried anti-inflamatories, but noticed no difference.  I've tried ice-on-ice-off method and reducing my activity, but noticed no difference.  I've tried different shoes, but noticed very little difference.

Has anyone else experienced this before?  I've never had this before, though I have had plantar fasciaitis before, so I know it's not that.  What do you think it is and what should I do to treat it?  Strangely, I went to a baby shower yesterday and wore a pair of 1.5-2 inch heels for about 4 hours.  I realized about 2 hours into wearing the shoes that the pain was gone!  I thought maybe it was finally healed, but after an hour or so without the heals, it started to hurt again.

Should I try wrapping or taping that area?  Should I see a podiatrist?  Should I give it a few more days, since it's only been painful for about 3-4 days now?  Should I try resting it more or maybe stretching it more?

It's your shoes, 99.99999 percent sure.

U. A. shoes are OK for cross training but they are ALL so heavy and just not a great running shoe!

Update: I went to a podiatrist who took x-rays and said I had injured my sesamoids (the small bones at the base of my big toe).  It's a common injury and he prescribed anti-inflammatories and orthotics for my shoes.  My shoes are good shoes, he just said that I need additional arch support to take the pressure off the ball of my foot and my toes.  When I put the orthotics in my shoes, it was instant relief from the pain I've been having.
