i was just curious does anyone know around how many pounds you would have to gain or lose to change in pant size...whether it be up or down???

I really think it depends on what size you are first off! When I'm bigger it seems to take more, and when I'm smaller even 5lbs can mean I'm wearing my skinny clothes!

I've lost 20 pounds (from 175 down to 155) and two pants sizes (from 12-14 down to 8-10).  In terms of measurements, that's 5" off my waist and 2" off my hips.  Because I'm an apple, the waist is the limiting factor.  Last sizing chart I looked at claimed I'm a size 6 based on my hip measurement (38") and a 14 based on my waist (32")!!!

Original Post by moriyah:

I started at an American size 18 (and they were tight) on January 1 of this year.  I weighed 224 lbs at the time (I'm 5'10").  I now weigh 169 lbs and fit comfortably into a size 10.  So for me, I dropped a pant size about every 14 lbs.  Now that's pant sizes going from 18 to 16 to 14 to 12 to 10.  I gain and lose weight pretty evenly across my body, but I will say that I didn't drop pant sizes in perfect 14 lb incriments.  I was traveling, so the next time I weighed myself after January first, I'd lost about 22 pounds and only dropped enough to go down one size (but they weren't tight on me).  I was comfortable in a 14 by the time I hit 192 lbs, and by 185 I was in 12s (they were tight, though).  I'm now at 169 lbs, and my 10s fit great.  Though I could probably squeeze into an 8 if I had to.  Hope this helps.

I'm planning on losing another 26 pounds, so I'll keep you posted on how many pounds each size takes.

You just perfectly described by change in pant size,s LOL. We had similar start weights and similar current weights!

edit: and similar goal weights ( I have 30 lbs left to lose)

I don't think there is a set number of pounds that equals a pant size. I've heard that 10 lbs. should be one pants size, but as of right now I've lost about 17 lbs. and my pant size hasn't changed. I went from 160 to 143, and am a size 8 pants. I was never classified obese by my BMI, and they say that of you are underweight, it should be 10 lbs. per pant size. My pants fit a little looser now, but I'm definitely not into a size 6 yet.

I've always wanted to know this ! I wish it was a fixed science! I'm a pear shape, but in the extreme. I'm 5 foot 5, 145 pounds and I am still a size 12! a 12!!!!! I guess I'm almost on the short side, but I'm still envious of every other 145 pounder who fits rather comfortably in a size 8! Sigh. It's just differs so much though! I used to be 205 pounds, size 18... so maybe 1 size for 10 pounds works in my case.

I was a 14-16 in December, when I weighed in the 190s, now, about 35 lbs down, I'm still only down to a 12. I have this weird pair of American Eagle jeans that are a 12, but they're really tight in the thigh/waist area and really loose in the calf area. Makes me feel horrible about myself. Guess I just have a lot of leg fat.

Hold on a sec... I felt fat in AE jeans even when I was a size 8 (I'm 5'10" and a half so trust me when I say that size 8 is thin for me--at the time I weighed about 140 or 145).  Maybe you would feel better about yourself with a simple brand switch.  Try The Buckle.  They have three brands in particular that offer a range of styles to flatter just about any body type or size (Lucky Brand, BKE, and Big Star).  I don't mean to sound like a commissioned sales clerk, I swear I'm not one--I used to be a personal shopper.  Also, if you don't want to spend that kind of money, I've found that Old Navy jeans are very flattering.  Of course, if you really like AE merchandise, maybe just try changing the style of jeans you buy to one that's more flattering for your figure.  I hope this helps.

Thanks. True, I do like AE products a lot. I have another pair of AE 12s in a different style (wide-leg), and they fit great. Guess I'm just not cut out for boot cut or whatever the hell I got.
