If you wear a size 12 jean/pant does that mean you're a size 12? I know different store's sizes vary, but if one were to look at a generic store, lets say the Gap, do their pants sizes tell you what size you actually are?

As a rough estimate sure. But generally speaking no. This is a frustration of many people and you will find other topics like this.
There is no standard for how clothing is sized. You may be a 12 at Gap an 8 at store Y and a 10 at store Z. There is also something that many stores are doing now called vanity sizing. Where what used to be a 10 is now an 8 a 4 is now a 2 and so on. It makes you feel better, a little ego boost to buy more clothes.
Take your measurements, this is your best bet. And just for fun, take some of your pants that are the same size but diff brands, you may notice some large differences.

I try really hard not to pay attention to sizes. I trie on t 3 different styles once at teh same store in the same department and was 3 different sizes. Companies use sizes as a marketing ploy, I think. Use what you may be at the GAp for example as a jumping off point but buy what fits.
I have even bought jeans based on wasit size and had them be different when they fit.

There is no standard for women. Many higher priced brands 'vanity size' to entice you to spend more for their clothing.
The Gap has me at a size higher than norm. And nothing fit me properly there either, but that is besides the point.
I'm a 8/10 depending on the brand, store, and fit.
I'm not one particular size.

but what about the juniors and misses thing? how do juniors sizes correspond with misses? like if your a juniors 9 what would you be in misses normally?
first off--I.HATE. VANITY. SIZING. it short-changes us "little people".
second- juniors and misses' sizes are TOTALLY different. misses sizes are made to fit women who are fully developed and thus have wider hips, etc. juniors sizes are made for less-developed preteens/teens who still have a bit of the boyish frame.
From what I know... juniors sizes are actually all of the odd numbers, such as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17.. and missy sizes are the even numbers, such as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14... juniors sizes usually just run smaller than the missy sizes, as someone said. Right now I think I'm a 15 in juniors, but a 14 in misses.. I'm a bigger size in juniors just because they run smaller. Oh, the style of the clothes also varies as junior sizes are targeted more towards teenaged girls and missy sizes are targeted towards older women!
Although unfortunately, sizes DO vary from store to store.. there IS a "standard size chart," but most stores alter it for their own purposes... from my experience, GAP, Old Navy, and Banana Republic all have larger-than-average sizes because they are all owned by the same people. :]

I know exactly what you mean! The companies must be out to get the lil' people. :) I'm 4'9 and my jean size varies with each store. PLUS I have to get the jeans hemmed so that: a.) My mom does not have to constantly remind me to pull the bottoms of my pants up, and b.) so that I am not tripping over my jeans! :) Although, sadly, I own one pair of capris that totally looked like hemmed pants on me! :(
