do your parents eat like you?
i try to eat as healthy and clean as possible, with a few exceptions.. while my mom regularly indulges in jam, chocolate, wine (only like 1 glass a day), high-sodium soup, pancakes, french toast, angus burgers and tons of other unhealthy things (while being 5'4" and weighing 112 lbs - how is that fair?).
for all those REALLY healthy eaters out there (veggies, vegans, clean eaters, etc).. do your parents follow your example? have their eating habits changed since you started to eat healthier and become more health conscious?
i'm not the healthiest eater but i try. my parents definitely don't eat like i do. my dad works out a LOT though, so he burns it all off, but he downs about 12 sodas a day, and my mom lives on processed foods. i don't remember the last time they ate a vegetable. my mom thinks it's weird that i would rather eat an apple than chips. :]
I eat ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT FROM MY FAMILY! I try to eat as healthy as i can but people like my dad who has to eat dessert EVERY SINGLE NIGHT is not like me at all! I am not talking the small kind, where you eat a wee bit of chocolate or something i am talking about cake, ice cream, pie, etc... And not just a tiny slice or a serving size either! My Mom is trying to get healthy now, she's trying to make an effort and i am happy about that, and we are trying to get my dad to start to eat healthy, but he needs to eat dessert every night that could be a problem for me!
my brother.... bloody hell.
he can sit in an hour and eat 4 bags of crisps, about 6 sandwiches (cheese singles, peanut butter, chocolate spread - you name it), cereal, bananas, biscuits and whatever the hell he pleases EVERY NIGHT before bed.
he's stayed 110 @ 5"6' for about 5 years?
not fair!
My rents have been trying to eat healthy for years, but they tend to indulge often and make almost no progress. I used to be like them, but now I'm a vegetarian and I've lost some weight so they think I'm anorexic now! I've noticed that my Mom has been eating the same meals as me, though, so how can she label me like that?!
my parents eat okay. one thing I love about my parents is they taught me the importance of balanced meals: you have the starch, the veggies, and the meat. they all work together for you.
we never ate a lot of fast food..my mom likes some junk food [cookies, chips, etc.] and sometimes she eats low quality lunch meat :shudders: but other than that it's pretty good. our family's problem with keeping weight on is that we drink too much sweet tea [in the south, what can you do? sigh.] and generally need more work on portion control. my sisters and i weren't like obese kids though, so it wasn't too bad. we don't usually eat too much chocolate or sweet stuff, although with three daughters and no boys, the occasional late night pan of brownies was an occasional occurrence.
My father eats okay. He has a 20 oz coke everyday,, but he also has many fruits and veggies.
My mother is okay, too. She will only buy whole wheat bread, and cooks alot of chicken and turkey. We will have red meat sometimes, but at most only once per week. She does have a love for potato chips, though. But when you think about it, those aren't really bad for you: The only ingredients are Potatoes, oil and salt
My brother eats the typical kid diet, but he usually gets 3 servings of fruit and 2 servings of veggies a day. He does have 4 Eggo waffles and syrup every morning for breakfast, though.
So my family is moderately healthy; but I am the healthiest one there xD
Gosh no, my mum's a fitness freak!
Her idea of a treat is mixed seeds. Or honey on toast. Now that I'm ona diet too, I can see the attraction, but still.
She goes running for about 8miles nearly every single day, she goes to fitness classes like body pump (we need weight bearing excercise as osteoperosis is in our family) and also does 100+ sit ups and press ups per day. I used to worry about her weight, but now I just leave her to it, since I know how annoying it is when people tell you to eat :/
I'm closer to her normal diet now, what with the cottage cheese and the LOADS of veg, but I doubt I'll ever be so anal about healthy foods!
Actually because I started to eat healthy my mom has been eating way healthier, and because I suggested it, we got a family membership at the local gym.... so ya... :)
OMG NOT AT ALL. My ma actually gets mad at me when I buy organic food & thinks it's stupid that I'm a vegetarian : (
my parents don't eat like me. Infact, my mom is sitting next to me at the table eating eggos with lots of butter and real, warm maple syrup. She's 180 some pounds at 5'8, but I must say I do get envious of her sometimes. I WANT THOSE EGGOS DARN IT.
Definitely not. Most of it is my brother's fault though, I guess he just wants to do the opposite of what I do. When they first found out I was vegetarian he went out and bought them enormous amounts of meat to freeze, then left it out in the kitchen. There were giant bloody slabs of meat and carcasses all over the kitchen! They were wrapped in plastic, but it was still horrifying nonetheless. I couldn't believe that he could leave that out knowing I am so sensitive to animal rights!! It looked like I had walked into a butcher's shop!
When I adopted a bird, he wanted to have chicken that night, and even said, "I'll cook the bird tonight," knowing that I was in the room. Such a creep! So no, my parents don't eat like me, and they don't really try to be healthy. They think buying sugar free junk food is healthy, with very little fruits and veggies in their diet.
Spending a weekend with my mom not only shows how differently we eat, but it also showed me how she seems to be one of those people that's in complete denial of where her weight problem comes from. She kept complaining how she might never lose weight and going on and on why I don't indulge in the cupcakes she bought when I said I'd rather have a few dark chocolate kisses, (which I really would!). I explained to her how your tastebuds adapt to like the things your body truly needs and craves, but of course she just said it was b/c I was wierd and didn't know what I was talking a/b. It's sad b/c I love my mom, but she is really one of those people that doesn't see how the calories she eats stack up-she's def not obese, just overweight, and she eats normal portions of everything but her view of healthy food is so skewed.
However, I don't know a/b you guys, but I like having a mom who doesn't know a lot about nutrition and who's always telling me I don't need to watch my weight then a mom who would be making me feel like I need to be on a crazy diet. It's like a reassurance she thinks I'm beautiful inside and out:)
I noticed on Mother's day that my mom and I share the trait of the "compulsive snacker". We both start snacking and don't stop, only I've learned to control that impulse and she hasn't.
haha, erin, your family sounds really funny! although I totally see how it can get annoying. My family is also clueless, as are all of my friends. They not only eat a lot of junk but they're really not understanding of me wanting to eat healthy and put a lot of pressure on me to eat what they do and act as if I have a problem because I won't eat junk food. To the point that we've gotten into several arguments when I politely turn down food or offer to cook. I'm sort of outnumbered and alone :(
I have two younger brothers so the house is always well stocked with packaged/ processed foods, cookies, frozen dinners and candy. My family is also from Argentina, so my being a vegetarian is also completely alien to them and I think also angers them sometimes. they just truly don't understand the concept. My mom has finally started trying to be understanding and tries to think of alternative options for me when she cooks, but for the most part it's usually just popping a baked potato in the oven alongside whatever meat dish they are serving. They are not capable of one meal without meat in it, seriously, not one. I've tried cooking for them, good meals, to show them it's possible to have a nutritionally complete meal without meat, and my mom will end up cooking some fajitas or meat on the side "for my brothers" because they're growing boys. One of my brothers is 18 and has recently also become obsessed with bulking up, so in one meal, he'll sit down and eat about 4-5 steaks and several eggs. No veggies, nothing else, steak and eggs. (protein overdose?)
we also like to have big argentine style cookouts that MUST include at least 2-3 lbs of meat per person, chorizo, steak, chicken, etc. we basically fill the table with plattter after platter of meat. We had one of those this weekend and luckily my parents bought me some portobello mushrooms. This was really exciting because it shows they're beginning to understand, yay! but then my uncle began to yell at me about not knowing how to be healthy and vegetarian and i need to do better research and blah blah blah...he makes me really mad, but i wasn't going to get started on the sausage he was holding at the time...I don't know how to be healthy??
ayayay! i could rant on forever!
My parents eat meat while I'm a veggie :p My dad eat whatever he wants and don't care (he's thin anyway:P) but my mom is more focused on eating healthy and all that
I started my parents on their way to eating healthier!
My mom has always had it good, she weighs 110 at 5'4. My wanting to eat healthy inspired her to buy healthier foods at the grocery store, which benefits my entire family. Otherwise, my dad overeats WAY too much. He enjoys food. Somehow he manages to maintain a healthy weight, probably because he exercises almost every day.
my parents dont eat normaly WHATSOEVER! (their probably a big reason i became anorexic...) my dad only eats an apple in the morning and like a TON of cheese at night (weird huh?) my mom doesnt eat at all during the day, and eats like a jar of PB every night...
my dad on the otherhand... well from what i remember he's a meat and potatoes kinda guy but recently asked me how to change his diet cause he was inspired by me!! how flattering!! yay!
not at all... my family eats like crap.
white bagels with butter and jam for breakfast, cheese buns and little debbie cakes for lunch, and kraft dinner and hot dogs for dinner... maybe a peice of fruit or a few slices of cucumber if my mom cuts it up nicely and shoves it down their throats
every person besides me and my mom are overweight... my mom eats just like them usually, BUT she is a smoker and has a thyroid condition and these factors keep her about 115lbs at 5'4... this is technically in a healthy weight range, but for her age (which the aging skin and what not) it just ends up making her look sick!
but man i wish i could eat like her... ugh rye bread, pasta with cream sauce, perogies... all the bad carbs you could think of, she eats on a daily basis.
No one in my faimily is overweight bu they don't all eat healthily. My mum eats pretty healthily, shes vegetarian as well (I'm veggie too). She is one of those people who genuinely dislike things like chocolate and cakes, and she normally only has dessert if its a fruit crumble or pie, and eats tons of fruit and veggies. My dad eats pretty badly, he eats lots of meat, junk food and eats hardly any fruit/veggies.
My siblings also eat pretty unhealthily. My mum buys loads of biscuits and crisps for them and bakes loads of cakes/cookies etc (She is an amazing cook! Her cakes and desserts - unfortuntely - are amazing) which is annoying as I have such weak will power I normally end up eating them too. My brother eats pretty badly, but my younger sister eats so much rubbish but is so skinny - its unfair! My older sister is at uni most of the year, and eats okish, but she put on weight from the alcohol and eating junk instead of proper meals when shes super busy.
None of us eat take out or fast food though - my mum has never let us
