i try to eat as healthy and clean as possible, with a few exceptions.. while my mom regularly indulges in jam, chocolate, wine (only like 1 glass a day), high-sodium soup, pancakes, french toast, angus burgers and tons of other unhealthy things (while being 5'4" and weighing 112 lbs - how is that fair?).

for all those REALLY healthy eaters out there (veggies, vegans, clean eaters, etc).. do your parents follow your example? have their eating habits changed since you started to eat healthier and become more health conscious?

My parents eat horridly.  They eat a ton of processed food and stuff that has "low-fat" on the box means that you can eat however much you want of it, because it's "healthy" to them.  My mom frequently eats frozen dinner meals and ramen noodles and thinks that's considered a balanced meal and my dad frequently snacks all night long whilst watching television and sitting on his arse.  They have no concept of portion control either.  It's no wonder how I was such an over-weight child.  And I'm incredibly glad that they don't give me a hard time about making my own meals and such.

My parents do NOT eat very healthfully. I am very health concious. Both of my parents are overweight and the reason I'm losing the weight now is because its easier to drop weight at 18 than it is at 35.

My mom is extremely understanding and supportive of my healthy eating. She is very weight-conscious and she tries to be healthy she just lacks some knowledge. She and her boyfriend laugh at me in that "Oh that's her being healthy!" sort of way when I talk about health food, but they certainly try to learn from it. When I'm home from school I always shop with mom to spend time with her, and she's taken to asking me to go through ingredients with her to help her make the best choices which I think is really sweet. She always buys health food for me and her, but I often shop for myself because I have two younger siblings who definitely do not appreciate health food and I feel bad if mom spends more money on me.

My siblings eat terribly. My brother understands why I eat well and doesn't give me a hard time, but he doesn't join. My sister, though, actually complained to my mother the other day saying she was starving because all we had was health food! We all have a really fun, joking relationship though so everything comes out in the wash!

yep, ever since i got all healthy and they've noticed.... they've also started following my example. this includes my younger brother in grade school as well - he won't eat fat on meat (& i know as kids it used to be his favorite part) and spits it out

the last time i ate with my family they ate roast beef, mashed potatos with tons of butter, corn with tons of butter and a salad (which i don't think many people actually ate)

i ate baby carrots, an apple, mushroom barley soup and plain corn.

so no way.

my brother even mashed his corn, mashed potato and beef togeter in a huge mountain on his plate. PUKE. way gross.

Your family sounds JUST like mine, like, exactly! My mother is a very healthy eater and she never eats the processed and junk things; but occasionally when she makes breakfast for my brother and my father, she makes like banana bread, muffins and things, she usually has one with cereal (etc.) and some other fruit and healthy snack. I go shopping with her a lot and we choose out a lot of healthy food we can cook and I feel terribly bad because a lot of the time she has to pack on double the shopping cart because we eat differently than the other half of the family. Exactly like yours, my brother knows that I eat healthy but he has a stint of eating healthy but he eats what he wants. ;] Nice happy family, eh?

Oh, my father eats basically what he wants. He's a landscaper so he's outside all day, working really hard [he skips lunch] and he eats my mom's homemade cooking and has huge portions of it.

I logged my dad's breakfast today for kicks and showed it to him. He doesn't know squat about nutrition and it's become a joke between us. Mom always tells him to slow down when he's eating, since he never takes more than 5 minutes to down a LOT of food. We love him just the same, though. :)

My Dad usually eats pretty good...He has the reccomended servings of fruits and vegetables a day, but he also drinks alot of Coke, and reguraly indulges in fatty frozen burritos. Compare my lunch with his:

Me: Homemade Roma-Tomato soup with basil and garlic, topped with Italian-herb whole-grain croutons; plain Silk soymilk, baby carrots and a homemade, Blueberry Flax-Germ muffin.

Him: A frozen burrito and a regular Coke.

Well, no one in my family is really overweight. I mean my mom USED to be a fitness freak, like she would run about 6 miles a day and go to the gym for two hours and stuff. But for the past year she gained some weight and has struggled with losing it. Now that I'm dieting I find that whatever I decide to eat for that day (whether it be healthy or unhealthy eg. pizza or a salad) directly affects her. So if I choose to eat a salad and workout that day, she will do it too. But if one day I decided "the hell with it, i feel like indulding" then she will also do the same. So I have a pretty good influence on her.

My little brother on the other hand, he lives on fried chicken, fries, chips, candy etc. His dad always makes him eat a bit healthier when he stays with him, but when he is home with my mom and I, he eats pretty bad even when we are eating good.

Now, MY dad is pretty much a health and fitness freak. He is a persoal trainer and refuses to eat fast food and junk food. He does eat pretty big portions but he burns it all off working out everyday. He has an awesome body and it's all because he eats the right foods. Sadly I don't live with him.

But anyway, basically I'm  supported eating healthy in my home and have influenced atleast my mother (with good and bad habits). We just need to work on my brother.

I'm a vegetarian. That alone separates me from the rest of my family. I'm pretty careful about monitoring my sodium, sat. fat, and calories, whereas my mom and sisters don't seem to care. They pretty much just eat lunchmeats, ground turkey-based dinners, canned soups, frozen foods, chips, processed cheese, and white grains. My mom does eat wheat bread, lowfat yogurt, and nuts, as well as avoiding soda. My dad is all about eating a limited number of cals when he's on a diet (which he frequently is) but he doesn't exactly worry about what he eats, so long as he doesn't go over his limit.

I do all my own cooking, and I frequently make enough for my daddy and brother-in-law, 'cause they like my food. My mom'll say nice things about my meals, and ask me about how I made it, but she doesn't want to eat it. She always says, "It's pretty good, but it needs more salt." I told her that doing so would sort of defeat the purpose. xD

Since becoming a cleaner-eater, I know a lot more about what I eat (and what I don't), and I've had pretty good success informing those around me as to how to eat healthily. I've been careful to not adressing specific people's diet disasters, but it really is hard not to. I've become some sort of go-to for any knowledge regarding health and diet.
not even.  they eat anything but in good moderation while i pick the healthiest but i have a binge disorder.  they are as skinny as hell too.  guess i got the  bad genes and portions do make a difference.

my family eats totally different meals.

my mom's on the atkins diet, constantly eating meat & cheese.

i'm vegetarian , eat a lot of fruits & too many carbs.

my dad eats a lot of what I do, but a lot of fish as well.

and my brother eats whatever, lots of candy and  little kid junk food

I am the only one who's calorie counting, but my family supports it, buying me lots of fruits, veggies, lean meats. My mum also cleaned out the pantry for me from all highly junky foods. My little sister started complaining but we kept a cupboard for her and my dad.

My sister eats whatever she wants. She is 00 and does not gain a pound. At all. EVER. She can have like three grilled sandwiches in one day and it will not be reflected on the scale the next, even with water weight gain blahdiblah.

My dad eats fairly healthy, except he has a huge sweet tooth. Eats so much chocolate and pastries and cakes. Yet magically, like my sister, stays pretty slim.

My mum tries to eat healthy. She cooks really delicious healthy meals that whole family enjoys, but sometimes she just eats too much. She's also trying to lose weight, so its nice to have a partner-in-crime.

My parents both eat horribly unhealthy, but neither of them have weight problems. My mom eats waaaaay more than me and she is only 5'1 and weighs 116 lbs.... I'm 5'4 and have worked REALLY HARD to make it to the 137 mark.

I can't wait until I move out so I can buy my own food!

I tend to eat WAYdifferent from my parents. My papa is a die-hard 'meat-and-potatoes' guy, been that way for 72 years. Drinks red wine with his dinners and finishes it up with a smoke of his pipe, as well as a sweet here and there. Surprisingly, he's still going strong - though I am NOT condoning smoking/drinking/horrid diets, even to ME it seems vaguely inhuman and I'm related to the man!

My mom, not so much. She's started getting into the swing of making healthier meals (For my sake anyway). She's a pretty big vegetarian now, though still eats sweets and eggs, and since moving to the states she's began to care more and more about her appearance. She doesn't make her super-fatty high-carb/high-fat traditional meals as much, and has even tried her hand at a few new ideas (Nothing funnier that watching a short middle-aged Norwegian woman cursing at a wokof Szechwan chicken and Chow Mein, haha).

I can proudly say that I eat pretty darned healthy though, and I'm glad that at least my mom is willing to support that. :)

As for my siblings, well, I have a LOT, the ones I'm in regular contact with all range in different diets. Like, one of my brothers eats HORRIBLY, fast food every other day, sodas, burgers... and it shows. Where as one of my older brothers eats really healthfully.

Eh, if I go on anymore I'll fill up the whole forum, don't want to do that! hahaha!

My mom is the same way.  If we go to a restaurant and I order a salad, she will too. And then she'll make little comments about what everyone else is eating.  But if I decided to splurge and order a burger and fries, she'll do the same.  She tries to support my healthy eating habits, but seems to resent my presence in the kitchen, every time I cook for myself or when I try to help her with cooking.

My family sometimes tries to eat healthy, but they don't seem to know how to.  They'll praise themselves for eating salads covered in cheese and nuts and drenched in dressing.  Sometimes I go grocery shopping with my mom, but it's stressful cause she's always in a hurry, and I love looking at everything and reading all the labels.  It's tough too cause I have a 16 year old brother who's an athlete and needs to eat a lot.  Living at home has been rough on my diet!

My family keeps me on track - dad is really healthy so I know all the meals I have at home will be healthy and there is never any junkfood in the house - well, VERY rarely. It's all just good stuff like fruits etc. Which is really good for me, because if it's not there, I won't eat it. I only get tempted to have it when I see my friends eating it/I'm out and about. So at least I know at home I will be healthy.

I always cook my own meals coz I prefer completely different foods to what my family enjoy.

My mum usually cooks rice with lamb curry, kebabs, lentils with oil topping, spinach and potato curry, chicken curry etc

I love asian food in particular. I also indulge in seafood whereas no one in my family enjoys it much.

kayy well even though my family IS vegetarian (indian) each of us has a diff diet sorta thing:
My mom: believes in healthy eating but with the divorce and stuff she's really stressed and eats junk food like chips/crackers etc so has gained a lot of weight, but she encourages my dad adn bro to eat healthy, she wants me to put ON weight which i just lost (now am average)

my dad: used to overeat a lottt and overdid things like indian fried snacks, and greasy, overly flavoured nuts etc but recently is going on a 1200 cal per day diet (he really is overweight) and eats a lot of tofu and salad now.

my brother: really isnt that bad but overeats because of stress my parents put him under, he eats a lot at night like Captain Crunch and granola bars. while these things may be good for you in general yous till need moderation, which he doesnt have, and neither him nor my dad chec nutrition info often, my mom does but doesnt take it seriously.

what i hate is when my mom makes something that seems low-fat (salad with chickpeas and tofu) then adds high-fat dressing and cheese thinking i wont notice. My brother and dad like palces like Taco Bell a lot and call me anorexic for ordering a bean burrito as opposed to an apple pie etc.

basically my mom wishes my brother and dad atte a little better and i ate worse, (she buys thigns like brownies and all and bakes to make me eat them, where i prefer to get my fats from peanut butter and milk etc)

sry. needed to vent :)

me: im into organic, healthfood and traditional foods like butter, sourdough bread, and fermented healthy foods. I eat alot of raw veggies, whole grains, and very little meat. All my dairy is raw and full of good full fat.

My mom: eats very much like i did, except she is more moderate, and still indulges in junk, but also eats normally. Shes probably more what i would like to be, my mom also doesnt really have a weight problem.

My dad: eats crud all day, he makes meals out of cookies, and eats white bread with cinnamon sugar, and he imense weight plays tribute to that.

my sister: eats organic, food like me, and is getting into traidtional foods like i am.
