what part of "no mayo or butter" did you not understand!?
here's my rant for the day.... ordered a sanhwich for lunch today, asked for no mayo or margarine........... and lo and behold, it came with mayo. i swear to god. if it wasn't so obvious that it was the girls FIRST day working i would have sent it back...........
anyone else have some gems of restaurant experience?
Dude I would have sent it back anyways! Mayo is nasty!
Mind you, I say that but I had a salad for lunch and when I asked her to put "just a little" salad dressing on it she drowned my poor veggies, I still ate it, but now I feel kind of icky from the oil in the dressing... BLECH!
i would have sent it back and just been nice about it, not complaining, just stating the facts " I know your busy but, I asked for no mayo, my doctor said can't have any mayo or butter ... are you new here, I've never seen you before .... you'll get through it just take one thing at a time " a kind word goes a long way when you are sending back food, if it's the servers fault they'll probably admit it to the cooks so they won't retaliate against you by doing something bad to your food.
I had something much worse, i went to KFC last night and got a potato wedge that tasted like mold, so disgusting! there's no excuse for that, i'm writing a letter to the health department.
What is wrong with just saying, "I'm sorry, I ordered this with no mayo, could you please take it back?" First day or not, there is no reason to eat unwanted mayo. And it's not rude to politely ask for what you ordered.
Lots of times I get the salad drowing in dressing. I have learned to ask for it on the side. If it does not come on the sie I would send it back.

I ordered fettucini alfredo once and asked for the non-chicken version. They gave it to me with lots of tiny pieces of chicken in it. I sent it back. it came back to me less than 5 minutes later (The first time it had taken 20 minutes + to make). It was obviously they had just picked out the chicken and melted new cheese on top. There was still lots of chicken left in it. I was pretty peeved about it.
oh man i would be ANGRY about that!
I work in a restaurant and as a mayo-hater myself I totally understand where you are coming from. My theory is that the kitchen staff is just programmed to make items the way they were trained to. I order food with NO MAYO, or NO DRESSING in BIG BOLD letters and they STILL put it on. I also don't have a problem sending it back regardless of if its for myself or a customer and the kitchen staff always feel really badly for making it wrong. (and in some instances take stupid shortcuts to make it right again....ie; the chicken example above)
I avoid eating at work now. If I want a meal made my way, i'll make it myself.
"could i have just a LITTLE lite mayo" and then they drown the thing and look up at me with those eyes that ask, "is that okay??". grrr.
In food service a lot of employees run on autopilot at one point or another. Sometimes it just helps you gnaw through the day faster. And.. Sometimes you're just the unlucky customer that gets the autopilot burger with mayo. All you must do is politely ask that it be sent back and made right, regardless of restaurant type.
I worked at Chuck E Cheese when I was 17, so just imagine my lovely stories I could share about the kitchen alone. -laughs-

Who cares new or not you should have thrown the sandwhich at her and once again ask for what you wanted, Who cares about being "correct" or "nice" in this case..
Unless you are joking, you realize that people like you are the reason people like me loathe every waking second of their customer/food service jobs? You don't "throw" sandwiches at people. You don't throw anything at people and you don't throw toddler temper tantrums over mayonnaise on a sandwich. Grow up.
You know it's probably not the waitresses fault right? I'm a waitress at a breakfast place and the chef makes mistakes all the time that people yell at ME about (and reflect in my tip) so throwing a sandwich back at your "idiot waitress" probably isn't the right thing to do or even the right person to blame.
It's a shame your sandwich wasn't made properly, I would have sent it back in this case because I HATE mayo, but I'm' just wondering....
who puts butter on a sandwich?
I would have sent it back in a polite manner. It's not the waitress' fault most of the time either. They're only at fault if they don't write it down on the slip.
I am a very fussy eater, though. ^___^ I have to be superduper careful now not to have dairy in my food because it makes me feel ill as anything, and I actually had a very good experience - at a theme park, would you believe - when the waitress actually went into the kitchen and asked for me what was made free of dairy. I had a lovely Moroccan veg stew with apricots and chickpeas/butterbeans in it among other things. Yum. :D
Bad stories... We went to a restaurant that specializes in chicken dishes here, called Nando's. Don't know if they're in the US. Still! It was before a Drama performance, so there were a few of us. I stuck to sharing a bowl of chips with my friend (I don't like chicken too much, she was losing weight but wanted a treat; I incidentally now don't like chips either xD) but everyone else had chicken burgers and whatnot. One girl was allergic to mayo and made it VERY VERY clear to the waitress that she couldn't eat it at all - not even the slightest trace - or she would go into anaphalactic shock from even a marginal amount. Severe allergy. \;
So, guess what? They all come out with mayo on. First time around, she keeps her cool and asks for a chicken burger without mayo. It comes back, and quite similar to sarah_11235 described with picking out the chicken: it had simply had some of the mayo scraped off of the bun, rather than a new burger made. There was still mayo in it. My friend got to her feet, went to the pass and yelled: "WHAT PART OF I COULD DIE IF I EAT MAYO DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?!"
We ate for free. >>
Funny stories... I once had to send back a chicken, strawberry and mixed veg salad because, of all things, it had frozen (yes, frozen, still with the ice on!) chips in it! Gross! Ate for free there, too! xD
