Well, all the discussions on combating over-eating and getting into a regular exercise regimen is great and it's helpful. I'm not even too bad at it, apart from one 'slight' problem. I just love to drink - openly speaking, I reckon there's nothing like a night out pouring copious quantities of alcohol down my throat. Now I know that's not very sensible and all that, and I'm trying to cut it down, but I'm a middle aged guy and I love going out for a few (6, 7, 8) beers after work a couple of times a week and getting trashed at the weekends. Grew up like that and it's a mighty hard habit to kick.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one and  there must be a few of us with the same problem...so, any advice, tips or just commiseration from anyone out there on how to manage the party beast that lurks and waits for the slightest opportunity to jump out and start raising hell ?

self discipline. i would cut down a little at a time. start with drinking less on your outings or maybe one less day a week. then after a bit cut back a little more, probably another night since any self discipline you do muster up will be trumped by the alcohol.

i will drink a beer here and there because i love love love it. otherwise i take every third or forth weekend off completely and drink and eat whatever i want but i dont go overboard.

not sure how that would work with serious drinking though. i was once married to an alcoholic who would disappear for days. thats not so good!

Yeah, you are so right about defeating any self discipline built up. It's fragile and hard work and easily lost by a couple of hard nights out in a row. I think the method you've described has  got to be the most sensible way to do it. Going cold turkey is probably just going to set myself up for a fall. I am in good health and have a reasonably stable, happy life so it's not all bad.. and fortunately I'm not at the disappearing stage  and never have been (flirted with it once or twice though  :-)

I like the idea of saying to hell with it and taking a weekend off every now and then. Gives you something to look forward to when the the going gets tough.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and share your thoughts. Appreciate it. Good luck!

Shake your booty and dance those calories off. ;) Works like a charm.

I used to be a "glass of wine every week night and a couple bottles on the weekend kinda girl" now I save it for one night during the weekend and drink one whole bottle of wine to myself.  Only four glasses in total and it's well worth the wait.
