I'm trying to over come anorexia nervosa at home. I feel hospital takes away my control, but how long do I keep trying at home before I consider hospital?
Answer
Residential treatment is for anyone with an ED who needs structure and accountability in order to regain weight. Residential treatment may be right for you if you cannot reach at least 85% of your ideal weight and if you cannot dispel repetitive “eating disordered” thoughts that lead to restricting, purging or compulsive exercise. Yes, you do have to rethink your rigid control but the therapies are designed to aid in your recovery. In-patient hospitalization, with its higher level of care, is for medically unstable patients or those at high risk for suicide. Ideally, your doctor and psychotherapist will recommend the appropriate treatment for you. Read about how to Get the Right Level of Eating Disorder Treatment at About.com.
