Paula Deen....holy lard-a-mole!
does the title not say it all?
i was watching a paula deen episode tonite while doing hw lol and noticed just HOW much of the stuff she makes is deep fried!! i dont watch the food chanel a lot and honestly it grossed me out. :/
first she made collard green wontons in which she first cooked the collards in olive oil and a whole stick of butter. then she puts them in the wontons, deep fries them, and serves them on a bed of you guessed it...more deep fried collard greens!
then she goes on to make deep fried halibut sandwiches on huge rolls with globs of mayo mustard sauce.
as if that wasnt bad enough, the last thing she made was deep fried cheesecake. covered in powdered sugar, chocolate, and whipped cream. wow.
now i do think that indulging on unhealthy desserts and such once in a while is perfectly healthy and fine, and that its not like the food is gonna bite you back...but honestly maybe she could trim it down a little?
haha just felt like sharing that :)
yikes.... and suddenly the birthday cake I had today doesn't seem that bad.
lol, I watch food network all the time, she cooks like a fattie. I saw her criticized on oprah once for it and she said "hunny I'm your cook not your doctor!" haha. I guess some people just enjoy rich food, I find it nasty though.
Thats her thing. I think it masks how bland and unapetizing her recipes actually are.

That woman loves her some butter! Haha. I remember around Halloween on Regis and Kelly, Kelly dressed up as Paula Deen and if I remember correctly she made a lot of stuff with butter even took two donuts and put a stick of butter in the middle of it and took a bite. Hahaha.
I actually enjoy watching Paula she's a cheery woman which makes it fun to watch, but I agree you couldn't get me to eat her food much less touch it with a 10 ft. pole. :P
Guess you didn't see the deep-fried-bacon-wrapped-butter-filled mac and cheese then? Or her Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg? Yes, she used TWO donuts.
Her recipes are such a joke. They DEFINE our obese nation. x(
My personal favorite is her deep fried butter balls. Haha.
yeah, her stuff is very unhealthy and fattening, but she's entertaining :)
I won't lie, I'd eat her food if it wasn't so fattening.><
Oh Man Paul Deen's show is just pure comical value! I mean who doesnt love cheesecake or wontons but leave it at that, they are yummy without the added deepfrying.
I wonder if she really eats like that all the time or its just for "show"
I love Paula Deen - she's so entertaining and joyful. She reminds me of my grandmother who cooks (and acts) the same way. I think that's how that midwest/southern generation grew up. I would never consider making one of her recipes, but she's just fun to watch.
Paula Deen Sit N' Eat Diet
I think she's highly entertaining even if some of her cooking makes me reel and laugh and my heart ache just watching. She reminds me of another cookery programme that used to be on in the UK (sadly, one of the two ladies died) called Two Fat Ladies. I don't know if that is ever broadcast in the US but I think it may be.
The two chefs within TFL, Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright, often got totally slated for the amounts of lard and butter, cream, etc, that they'd use in their food - but MAN did it look good. They did also cook dishes you could easily replicate and with variety even if the ingredients were very much of the full-fat kind.
I like a chef with personality. Cooks like Anthony Worrall Thompson and James Martin bore me because they're so flat. Give me Gordon Ramsey, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the Two Fat Ladies et al any day. >>
Ugh...I can't even watch the show. Thinking of that much butter in anything makes me nauseous.
Is this Paula Deen woman overweight then?.... Or is she like the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, rake thin and handing out deep-fried lollipops? There was a brunch recipe on Nigella Lawson's Christmas series this year which was something like a dozen eggs magimixed with half a pound of cheese and another pound of butter... not sure what happened to it next but it sounded horrendously indigestible. I expect it was a case of 'serve with a defibrilator on stand-by'.
Anyone remember Graham Kerr a.k.a 'The Galloping Gourmet' from the Seventies? Like a lot of cooks of the day he lavished cream on everything that wasn't deep-fried or 'en croute' and washed it down with plenty of wine. He was OK but his poor wife Treena nearly dropped dead of a heart-attack. Shocked by this he changed his ways, changed his cooking style and now he's a complete health-freak
I've seen Paula Deen deep-fry lasagna.
I agree with lala & love a chef with a personality, but I find sometimes Paula is too over the top lately, like Rachael Ray. If you look back at their older shows, they seem more laid-back. Now maybe they're just more comfortable with dramatics? I still adore & watch them anyways.

Yep, and looking at older shows going in the wrong direction.

ughh i can't stand paula deen. her "ya'lls" make me cringe. the one episode i saw was when she had max brenner on and they were making a chocolate pizza... ew.
Paula moons her audience.
I don't know this woman, and calorically I know better than to indulge in food like that...
But if health weren't a factor, I'm ashamed to admit I would be allllll over that food. Sounds freaking GOOD. Just reading about it is making my saliva glands hurt from going into over-drive.
the only thing i know about paula deen is what i've read in the forums here. i don't understand why she has an audience, and i definitely don't understand why anyone who's interested in health is paying attention to her.
I can totally understand why people interested in health would watch her - its like watching a train wreck or a car accident. We're all generally interested in self-preservation and safety (or in this case, health), but when something goes horribly wrong we can't help but watch.
We KNOW what these kinds of foods do to us. We KNOW that people out there eat like this. For me, watching Paula cook is great encouragement to eat healthy foods. Every time I watch her show, I think I probably cut at least 100 calories out of my lunch and dinner.
I'd really love to see someone put her recipes through the calorie-count wringer and see what the nutritional values add up to be. I'm sure just one Paula Deen dish is well over my daily allowance of calories and over 4 times the allowance of fat.
