Paula Deen....holy lard-a-mole!

Quote  |  Reply

does the title not say it all?

i was watching a paula deen episode tonite while doing hw lol and noticed just HOW much of the stuff she makes is deep fried!! i dont watch the food chanel a lot and honestly it grossed me out. :/

first she made collard green wontons in which she first cooked the collards in olive oil and a whole stick of butter. then she puts them in the wontons, deep fries them, and serves them on a bed of you guessed it...more deep fried collard greens!

then she goes on to make deep fried halibut sandwiches on huge rolls with globs of mayo mustard sauce.

as if that wasnt bad enough, the last thing she made was deep fried cheesecake. covered in powdered sugar, chocolate, and whipped cream. wow.

now i do think that indulging on unhealthy desserts and such once in a while is perfectly healthy and fine, and that its not like the food is gonna bite you back...but honestly maybe she could trim it down a little?

haha just felt like sharing that :)

I love to watch the Paula Deen show. She's very entertaining. However, her recipies remind me of everything that is gooey, sinfully delicious, and totally bad for your health. I would not cook like that but because of the way some Americans, (especially those from the South) were raised eating those type things her cooking appeals to many people.  Not all people are health conscious when it comes down to eating.  If they were we wouldn't have the problems with obesity that we now face. We wouldn't need programs like Weight Watchers or Calorie Count.  I don't think that any health conscious person would consider following her recipies.  I have taken the basic concept from a couple of her less threatening recipies, and modified them and they turned out pretty good.

When they did eat like that they were also working MUCH harder than anyone in this generation does--my father grew up on a farm and ate whole milk, butter, eggs and beef most of his life but also worked 15-16 hour days gardening, hoeing potatoes, milking the cows, baling hay. . . it all comes down to calories in vs calories out, and we dont burn off the calories anymore like they used to.  Of course, most of my aunts and uncles now have heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and cancer too. . .

Yes, that was my point.  To use the ingredients you want, in moderation, and to realize that we are much more reliant on others preparing our food and doing our chores than our ancestors were!  Like I said, one can be really thin and still have cholesterol problems.  It all boils down to using common sense.  No food should be off limits.

I agree with you 100%. Children's idea of fun now days  is to sit in front of the play station all day, exercising their fingers. I try to instill in my kids the importance of physical exercise as well as proper eating habits.

I remember Graham-and I believe he is dead now....

Decadent and butter laden desserts are what I save for holidays!  And I love Paula, who always says "everything in moderation"-with a wink...

Oh, Paula is a chunky Southern babe!

Original Post by carolinamoon7:

oh wow I just saw an episode of hers where she made a sandwich by putting a burger, eggs, and bacon in between 2 krispy kream donuts. She called this brunch lol. Even when i was eating what ever I wanted whenever I wanted I never put random things together. I mean I love choclate chip muffins and tomato salsa but I would not put them together.

I still love to watch her show but I know that if she keeps that up she will be a load of health problems waiting to happen

unfortunately i've seen this one too... my grandmother is a huge paula fan and actually makes her desserts, around the holidays though.. i think that's the only time any of her recipes are nearly acceptable.  the woman is a heart attack waiting to happen.. I think it's sad that people make a living capitalizing on America's gluttony & sloth. however, she is entertaining.

I watch the Food Network channel quite a bit. I know what you mean by Paula Dean. Have you also noticed how much weight she had put on lately? LOL!

I lived in the south for a while, and I'm going to say this now: Paula is the epitome of southern cooking.  I don't know what anybody thinks "southern" cooking is, unless you're talking Orleans with those spices, but true southern is deep fried EVERYTHING.

They deep fry pickles there.  Oreos.  Ding Dongs.  Bacon wrapped hot dogs.  Paula is just staying true to her roots.  I love her food, if not deep fried ding dongs (gross).  You haven't lived until you've tried her baked french toast casserole.

BTW, my favorite restaurant in NC?  A little place called "Fatz."

i saw an episode last week where she had southern fried chicken (in lard)- then proceeded to make a sauce, with 2 sticks of butter, honey and something else to pour over the chicken- i swear i felt my arteries start to congeal.

We refer to the Paula Deen show as FOOD PORN.  I grew up thinking vegetables had to be swimming in butter, but we never ate anything deep fried at home and fewer and fewer pan fried meals as my grandmother stopped cooking.  Today, it's all about olive oil and broiling and grilling our food.  Thank heaven we learned.

Wow. I've seen Paula Dean commercials, and really enjoy those, but I've never really watched the entire show. I laugh when that commercial for her bacon comes on and she is smacking her lips ("Oh, delicious!"), though that's probably a pretty mild demonstration of her amazing, deep-fried, greasy, putting-random-things-together talent. Though...the deep fried cheesecake does sound disgustingly appetizing.... :P

I kind of worry about that poor woman. I'm sure every heart doctor in America just dies when they see her.

Oh don't worry about her, she's just cleverly opening up a market base for the future, when she and her sons will begin selling a line of defibulators and diet products.....

smart.

i am so glad someone finally is speaking up about how disgusting her food is. I have been completely grossed out by her recipes for a long time but it seems like not many other people see it. thank you for bringing this up. I honestly don't know how anyone could ever eat like this, and especially give meals like this to their children. ugh
