OMG. I was just watching paula's home cooking (yeah, I'm a food network junkie). Well she was making these cookies that were storebought cookie dough on the outside and mint chocolate on the inside. At the end, she threw a cookie to her dogs as a treat, who ate it happily, having probably lived on a diet of toxic "people food" their whole lives anyway.

Chocolate=extremely lethal to dogs. Duh! Any dog owner should know that much before they get a dog, let alone several.

Sorry, I just had to rant about this!

The poor things, I hope their tummies where ok.

I still feel bad about this past weekend.  We had company and I wasn't watching my beagle as well as I should.  She never gets people food, with the sole exception of a carrot or two once every couple of weeks.  But being a beagle she is always on the prowl.  :D

Well, long story short she ended up eating half a brownie and a few licks of red wine before I noticed.  Poor thing had an upset tummy the whole next day.  :(

(Seriously though, what dog willingly drinks pinot noir, anyway?)

I think it would be more dangerous to feed an animal dog food. My dog has eaten bits of chocolate occasionally and has neevr eaten dog food. She's 14 years old and except for a genetic desease she's always had, she's still about as frisky as she was when she was a pup. All the vets she's been to are absolutely amazed at how healthy she is at her age. The secret? Human food.

Many of our friends' dogs, who have always been fed a strict diet of the "healthiest" dog foods, have died of kidney failure, heart desease and other illnesses taht were all contributed to being fed dog food.
Oh, so what if someone in the media proves they're human.
Also, Chocolate is only lethal to dogs if its consumed in large quatities. dogs (and cats... but they are smaller animals, so even a teensy amount can be too much) simply can't metabolise it quickly. But, if its only a small amount, they'll be fine. no harm done. It will pass through their system a bit slower than other food, but no problem, really. If these dogs simply shared a small cookie, it won't hurt them in the least.
Human food=healthy. Paula Deen's human food=disaster for people and dogs.

lol @ marconi's latest comment... but like Sarah I've always thought it was large quantities of choc that are bad for dogs. Not that I've willingly fed my pets chocolate... but I think a lil mistake like that is not too bad.

Our family dog once ate an entire bag of hershey's kisses that were on the counter for making peanut butter kiss cookies. He ate the plastic and the tin foil - everything - they were on top of the microwave (not on) that was on top of the counter. He'd never done anythign like that before... but apparently the kisses were calling his name "Nanook, Nanook!! EAT ME!!" He didn't get sick at all. Tummy like a steel drum, that one.

was nanook a husky?
no, jewels, but we did get the name from watching "the lost boys" -- they had a husky named Nanook. He was a mastiff/maybe lab/maybe ridgeback mix (kind of like a huge puggle if you've seen what they look like). I miss Nanook very much, he was a great dog. He died of cancer about 8 years ago - started as bone cancer and then moved to his entire body. He was about 11 when he died.

Hmm. When I get home tonight I will scan some pictures of him and post them to my profile.

ps: thanks for the pet food info a few days ago :)
yeah but on tv... now some people will be like "oh, chocolate's okay for pets" and not realize that has any toxicity, even if it only causes problems in large amounts. The whole point of my post was that if you're good enough to show yourself and your pets on tv, you should treat them like real animals and set an example.

That being said, I have had my share of pet+choc=funny story moments myself...

lol! oops - I will have a few drinks before I post next time!! ;)

I can confirm that 5oz of hard parmesan cheese does little to no harm to Chihuahuas, except for a day of sleeping and a look of smug contentment. One of mine got in to the rubbish last night.Yell

On topic though, one of mine ate an entire box of Junior Mints to no detriment. However, my dog from many many moons ago ate an entire chocolate cake which happily wasn't toxic except for the cleanup when I got home. He ate it, threw it up, ate it again, threw it up again....well, you get the idea. My dad had a similar experience on the farm, except it was calves testicles and the back seat of his car...Foot in mouth

My dogs get human grade food, but not human food. I make their food twice a week, an assortment of chicken or turkey breast (or fish), vegetables and rice or potatoes, but for the most part they aren't allowed to eat what I eat.

my cousin's schnauzer stole and ate one of those chocolate oranges, foil and all and all he had was some strange poop for a while.  I don't think all dogs are affected.  But who would take a risk with their pet's life.

My boxer that I had a few years ago once ate:

  • One of those giant novelty chocolate bars from an xmas stocking.
  • A pack of gum, wrapper, foil and all. We found out when he breathed in my brother's face and it was MINTY.
  • A pound of lunch meat my mom had on the kitchen counter for less than 2 minutes.
  • Countless cat turds he snuck from the litter box.

He also somehow drank one of those "hard tea" thingys.

With everything but the cat turds he had an upset tummy and had to eat canned pumpkin mixed with cooked brown rice for a day or so after instead of his normal food (which by the way is very good for a dog with an upset stomach).

Anyone who does a little research will find that dogs eating left overs do not hurt them. Yes chocolate in huge quantities can hurt your dog, but then so can kibble in huge quantites.   I asked my 70 yr old mother what she fed her dogs when she was a kid and she fed them only table scraps.  She had one black lab that lived to 23.
I wonder how much chocolate it takes to hurt them though, if it really does...

I mean I was at my friend's house a while ago for a party and she had a HUGE bowl of Reeses and a couple other chocolate candies on her table...

We left the room for a while and came back and the bowl was on the ground, there were lots of torn up wrappers and chocolate stains, and her little dog Gizmo was there eating it...

I mean seriously, it was a tiny dog, and it ate A TON of chocolate and other crap...it never even got sick..?  Maybe it just seriously depends on the dog.

It did end up pooping out a couple pieces of wrapper eventually though =P
I think a lethal dose is something like an oz per 2 kg body weight.

But, yeah, I guess I missed the point of the post. Indeed she should have at least mentioned "but remember, dogs can only have teeny amount of chocolate at a time so be careful." or something like that.
I think certain dogs are allergic to chocolate and others are not. My dogs have consumed chocolate at times not usually though becuase you never know. My grandmother gives her dogs chocolate all the time and they are fine.

but NEVER give dogs grapes. They are extremely bad for dogs. They killed one of my grandmothers dogs.

Also don't give dogs onions. Also very bad for dogs.
We were moving across country with 2 dogs, GA to AZ. We stopped and stayed over at my sister in laws. Next morning we had breakfast and we were getting ready to go I went to get the dogs kennels and there was all this food (scraps from breakfast) in bowls by the cages. The dogs had a field day. They never had people food. I was dumping diarreaha med down their throat from Memphis to New Mexico. I was so mad and my 5lbs poodle was so sick.

Years later my mom watched my little poodle and told her not to get him people food he had digestive problems. Day after thanksgiving dog is at vets on I.V.'s with panecitis (?sp).  He made it again. but had to keep on science diet dog food.
