Salmonella outbreak in peanut butter, you've been warned.

Just one more reason to keep away from those Reese's.

Crap.

Hah, pb of doom :D

but the jar ones ok, it says. you could make your own reese style sweets.

better yet, just make your own peanut butter, better for you anyway.

Just another example of why giant corporations and food production don't mix!!

I'm so confused about that article, this might be a stupid question but is it just in America??? Do you think they supply the UK too?? lmao I'm so paranoid already ...

I got so scared over this. One of the products that was recalled was the Austin brand PB sandwich crackers. I had a box of those and my kids had eaten all but a few packages. My son had inexplicably started vomiting the night before. As soon as I read the article in my local paper it became explainable...... I knew salmonella poisoning could take up to 72 hours to show symptoms, and that a few people had actually died from the outbreak. One in Idaho which is  not far from where I live..... I was just waiting for my kids to all become violently ill! Luckily, other then my sons vomiting episode none of them did. I am definitely blaming my sons vomiting on the crackers though. He definitely ate a lot more of those crackers then any of my daughters. He eats non stop! So he must have gotten a small but luckily harmless dose of salmonella. There isn't anything else that would explain it.... I am just so relieved that was all that happened.

so this won't effect australia right??!!?!?

omg! octo, how do you make your own peanut butter?!?!?

I don't know how octo makes peanut butter.  But I make my own too, and I don't think I'd ever go back to store-bought.

I take a mix of salted and unsalted roasted peanuts, and I dump them in the food processor.  Then I process away for a bit.  I add enough oil to bring it together (I really can't stand the peanut-only pb--it's not spreadable, and it takes all the joy out of putting pb on hot toast).  I also add a bit of honey for some sweetness.

I store my pb in the fridge.  It is usually pretty stiff when cold, so you have to let it warm up a bit before really using it.  I make about one pound at a time.

wow megs that looks nice, what sort of oil though?

can anyone link some recipes....

The calorie count in peanut butter s suprisingly hihg anyways.

Check it out on your food log.

Sorry for the sidebar...

I was shocked to see that Austin crackers have 2 grams of trans fat in them.  I won't be buying them again.

also i soak the nuts before. they say you should anyway to help release the nutrients but can't stand soggy nuts unless they are ground.

Although, according to the Hershey's company, all the Reese's products are safe since they make their own peanut butter. Yes, I went and checked on their website because I didn't want to throw away my yummy peanut butter cups. Smile
