Peanut butter
I've noticed that for a ton of people with binging disorders, cereal is a huge trigger. I know it is for me; I've stopped eating it entirely. But now my problem is peanut butter. I'm one of those bingers where, if I have a taste of something...I have to have more. And more. And more. And peanut butter right now is my worst enemy. Just to put this in perspective...let me tell you've I've had at least a third of a cup of it today.
So I was wondering...is peanut butter a problem for anyone else? And does anyone know why this is?
i don't know why, but i can't just eat a "little bit" of pb.
It gives me stomach aches, but i still can't seem to stay away.
My solution is having my family hide it from me. If I can't find it I can't eat it!
yes, i used to do that with pb. i would just go and have a finger full..then id go back and back and back. so now, i just avoid all together. thats the only thing what worked for me. im having a harder time with my other trigger foods however. good luck!
Yikes! I have been dealing with this for the last two days. Last night I was doing half a tablespoon of PB with the other half tablespoon of clover HONEY!!! and I couldn't stop. I consumed ...OMG... two dozen tablespoons of the mix. I ended up wiping out the last 1/4 jar of JIF (the largest size) and most of my honey.. and then I did another 5 tablespoons of honey.
I feel like a crack head!!
So, that's it, I'm not buying anymore PB, or honey.
This always happens at in the evening between 9-11pm.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I've done similar, I can only imagine...
I suppose I'll stop "tasting" pb....because you and I both know what that leads to.
Thank you for the support everyone, and good luck to you all.
Peanut butter is the devil. So is cereal. And together? Good heavens. My best/worst peanut butter experience was when I discovered it could be melted. And drizzled. And you'd better believe I melted almost half a jar, stirred a BUNCH of sweet cereal into it and some chocolate chips, (and we're talking like a cup here people) and just ate that with a spoon. Just THINKING about it makes me sick, but at that point I had probably eaten 100 cals/day for about a month and was quite literally starving to death, so it tasted like heaven in a jar to me. To this day, I can eat a whole jar of the sticky stuff in a day, easy. For me, it's cold turkey or nothing. Don't know why that is though. Maybe it's the good fats? I know many people, especially dieters, don't get nearly enough of those, so that could have something to do with it.
ew yea i binged on peanut butter and tried to purge? didnt work. peanut butter and ANYTHING is delicious - cold turkey works best for me. the second i open it i know i will consume calories i do not WANT to consume. torp - i feel lkike a lot of dieters are like about whole grains and good fats "im not gonna WASTE my calories on this healthy thing that has a lot o cals!" hmm idk i need to stop thinking like that!
Bingo! Ever wonder why dieters also say they overeat on nuts? I love peanut butter, so I just simply allow myself some everyday. at least 20-30% of your calories should come from healthy fats. So even if you get the right "amount" of fats but in the form of chips, cookies, ice cream, and other saturated fats, you will still crave the healthy fats from nuts and peanut butter.
What has worked best for me is, after I have my breakfast and I'm satisfied, I have a tablespoon or two of peanut butter with some carrots or celery. That way, I get a fix early in the day so I don't feel deprived, and I won't overeat because I just had a large meal. I usually eat about 2-4 tablespoons of peanut butter a day, as it's one of my few sources of fat.
I like peanut butter so I tried switching to a lower cal peanut butter. Hungry-girl.com suggested Better N' Peanut butter
http://www.betternpeanutbutter.com/
It has less fat/calories than normal peanut butter...and a slightly different taste. I'm very weird about things not tasting "normal" so I tend to eat less better n' peanut butter PLUS the calories/fat is lower. Overall it stops the craving and I eat much less of it.
I don't know if that helps you, but just a thought ;)
I had this problem until I switched to cashew butter. I LOVE it to death, but I find that I am absolutely satisfied after a 1/2 serving spread on a caramel rice cake.
I hate you all!
I too totally love peanut butter. especially on toast with margarine or real butter. Now i cant have it at all. or any nut for that matter. I developed a nut allergy and have to carry an epi pen with me. if i slip up i could die! What sucks even more is that nuttella is also banned. Some days I really want to sob. I used to love granola for breakfast with bananas and yogurt. not anymore.
Maybe if you guys pretended you had a nut allergy but then gave yourselves a splurge day it might help.
now i am craving peanut butter and banana sandwiches. thanks guys :)
I could eat peanut butter m&m's all day long. Now I have about a tablespoon of peanut butter with apple slices in the morning for breakfast. It's satisfying, and I eat it right before I leave for work. I'm constantly busy once I get to work, so I'm not tempted to go back for more.
mmmmm....peanut butter is sooo amazing, yet sooo bad when youre addicted to it! i heard there are some great fake pb substitutes though...haven't tried them but talked about them on a similar discussion....
as to cereal, i once ate an entire box of special k chocolate delite in one day. since then i stay far far away. OR
i have discovered if i get a wheat or fibery cereal, something simple, then mix a handful of it with plain or non fat yogurt as well as a few almonds and it tastes AMAZING
AND
it fills me up all morning. try it! that's calcium and fiber right there.
cereal is bad to. never one bowl.
i cant stop buying these things because i live with my family and they eat it all like crazy.
help!!
Peanut butter and cereal is the same for me too!
I go for porridge with water cos it takes a few minutes to make and isnt such easy access!
xXx
Wow I didn't realize so many people had a problem with peanut butter. Pilsbury, that's a good idea: pretend like you have a nut allergy. Lol. Yeah, I've decided to go cold turkey. Let's keep this thread going; it sounds like we need a pb support group.
Yes, i love peanut butter as well, once i almost chocked on peanut butter. i thought i was going to die...at least it would be a happy death. Death by pb. i too love 1 tbsp with a sliced apple, it is really delicious. if i measure out how much i can have than i don't binge.

i'm sorry, but this made me giggle - was it meant for comic relief? :P
and p.s. yes i looove my peanut butter - usually i can satisfy myself for the day at b'fast with a toasted 100 cal multi grain eng. muff slathered with PB..
jeboltz - that low cal cereal + yogurt idea is genius and sounds delicious! i usually eat way too much cereal in one sitting, too - but mixed with yogurt would thicken it a bit and end up being much more satisfying, i would imagine.
oh yes, there are many of us addicted to peanut butter. I can't control myself around any nut butters. I think once I reach my goal weight I'm going to have stop buying them all together. Right now my binging on peanut butter is probably a huge contributing factor to my weight gain (wanted weight gain btw)
I've tried all the tricks listed here and in other forums and it just doesnt work. I probably eat about 1/3 cup a day at least. I try eating it earlier in the day, I try putting it on toast, celery, apples, in cereal (OMG double trigger!) it doesn't stop me from going back for more and more and more. I've ended up feeling so sick from it so many times and I still don't seem to learn.
I also just had 3 bowls of ice cream (binge food #3) with coconut cookies, cut up bananas and peaches...I was so full after the first bowl, why do I do this?
Does anyone have any advice that could help me?? please! I need to stop :(
I miss the deliciousness

Make sure you're eating [whatever your goal # of calories/day is] in healthy food. One of the many reasons why ppl binge is because they don't eat enough real food to satisfy them, so when they get ice cream or pb in their mouth...their body's like "moremoremore!" Also, don't forget (I'm assuming you have been underweight, since you're on a weight-gainer diet) that your body might just be trying to gain weight, and it knows pb is the best way to do this.
phew. I've learned a lot about pb in the last month.
