Peanut butter is good?
I have heard peanut butter is good for your body. But I checked the nutrition table, and it says 1tbsp(15g) has 100 calories!!!
It is ever higher than chocolate and almost as high as butter!!!
Should I eat it or choose some other stuffs(cream cheese?) to spread on my bread?
Reason: Moved from Calorie Count Forum to Foods Forum
Peanut butter is good for you, but like all nuts and seeds, it's a very calorie dense food. But you do have to be careful about which peanut butter you buy. Some of them have a lot of added fat to make them spread better. I get fresh ground peanut butter and add a little honey to sweeten it.
I bought the President Choice's Just Peanut, it claims 100% roasted peanut...
Yeah, I really like nuts! Peanut, almond, cashew, walnut...all my favorite... But the sacry fact is they may contains more calories than those unhealthy food....
I just checked the chicken hot dog I bought. It is 34g per hot dog and is only 90 calories! definitely more statisfying than 1 tbsp peanut butter...
So chicken hot dog is better than peanut butter?
If by better you mean lower calories, then by a whisker, yes. If by better you mean healthier, not by a long shot. A hot dog is so full of chemicals and mashed pig nasties that I would take the all natural peanut butter over it on any given day, under any given circumstances.
consider quality vs. quantitiy
sure, a candy bar or cupcake may be lower in calories, but these calories are pure garbage, they contain no nutritional value and are basically composed of refined sugars, saturated and trans fats, and tons of chemicals, preservatives and stabolizers...
all these ingredients will basically spike your blood sugar/insulin levels and drop them just as quick.. leaving you hungry and wanting more junk food, which leads to overeating because you dont feel full... plus insulin spikes which cause the body to go into fat storage mode
...
as for peanut butter, yes it is high calorie... which is why you shouldn't be eating it straight from the jar. It is a SPREAD and meant to go on other foods, ie: lower calorie foods... like a peice of toast, celery, oatmeal, or an apple for more staying power.
Peanut Butter (THE NATURAL KIND) is good for you.. in moderation! It is a good source of essential fatty acids (healthy fats which you body NEEDS) and it contains a decent dose of protein. These two macronutrients slow digestion and KEEP YOU FULL and SATISFIED.
so yes peanut butter is high calorie, but it contains GOOD CALORIES... but ONLY use the natural kind. The commercial kind is full of added sugars, oils, maltodextrin and perservatives= bad for you.

you have got to start reading nutrition labels and ingredient lists better.
peanut butter= 100% roasted peanuts
chicken hot dog= mechanically separated chicken, salt, sugar, fillers, spices, perservatives, binders.. etc
there is like 50 "ingredients" that go into hot dogs... none of them good for you, and most are man made and fake
there is 1 ingredient in peanut butter... and peanuts are natural and good for you
the HEALTHIEST DIET is going to be the one LOWEST in processed/package/artificial/refined food... but HIGH in natural/whole/clean foods
you'll feel better overall, and lose weight best if you stick to a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins (poultry, fish, bison, soy, low fat dairy*), whole grains, and lots of water... avoid/limit: excess salt, added sugar, trans fat, processed foods, chemicals, perservatives, white flour, white rice etc.
Okay everyone so I have a question about this too, I love kraft peanut butter and I know it's not all natural, but I've been going with the low fat one which has about 90 calories for 1 tbsp and 6 grams of fat, is it just as bad?

it's WORSE
they replace the fat with additional sugars, chemicals and fillers... and for what? to decrease the calorie count by 10 calories? Please. If those massive 10 calories are that big of a deal just eat 12 grams (3/4 tbsp) of the regular NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER opposed to the regular 15 gram (1tbsp) serving
fat is not bad for you... but sugar is.
you'll be surprised by how many of those "reduced fat" "low carb" diet foods are even WORSE then their orginal varieties
if healthy= eating added sugar and chemicals, then you might as well mix a bag of sugar with the contents of the bottles under your kitchen sink
low/no fat does not equal good for you
often when something is low fat, they increase something else, like sugar. i don't know what the label on that pb says so i can't really say how comparable that is. but i still say it's worse than natural pb, even if natural has more calories.
and that's actually about the same amount of cals as natural pb is, only the kraft one is full of various unhealthy ingredients i'm sure, where as natural pb is just peanuts and maybe salt.
always best to stick to natural and least processed
I've never done it, because I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter, but peanut butter is easy to make, and then you can control the ingredients. You basically just stick it in a food processor and blend it to your satisfaction, with a bit of honey if you like it sweet: http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1630,147188-254199,00.html, http://kidshealth.org/kid/recipes/recipes/pea nut_butter.html
I would try making it with some almonds or another nut, maybe half and half, since while peanuts have "Good" fat, they don't have the micronutrients that other nuts do. Also, make sure you buy the dry roasted kind, so that it doesn't have oil added to the nuts.
Yes peanut butter is great for you, buy organic. And it's really tasty with Apple wedges :) A protein, fat, and a carb! Gives you a perfect nitrogen balance and will help you lose weight.

I'm going to go that route when this one is finished, but fyi the sugar content is still only 1gram... I don't doubt theres a million other ingredients in there but figured it was worth a shot. Natural PB it is.

Look at the ingredients list.
100% roasted peanuts might mean there is nothing but peanuts in the product, or it might mean that all of the peanuts in the product are roasted.
I have Natural peanut butter by Skippy. It says on the ingredients: Peanuts, salt. I assume this is safe? I got 2 PB2 and 2 chocolate PB2 samples I can't wait to try out.
