I found this recipe online and think it sounds really good. Wondering what people think as far as the health content goes? I am planning on eating them as a snack or dessert.
Ingredients:
There are a variation of recipes, but I picked what I liked the best and this is what I came up with...
1/2 c. peanut butter (will be using smart balance omega 3 peanut butter)1 c. uncooked oatmeal (getting some plain oatmeal @ trader joes)
1/2 c. honey
1/2 c. raisins, optional (I am using some of these, maybe 1/4 c. though)
1 c. instant dry milk (going to use non-fat) 1/2 c. wheat germ
Mix all together. Roll into 1 inch balls. Store in refrigerator.
if you don't eat too many of them, they would certainly work as a good snack -- you have carbs, protein, and fats in there.
I should warn you -- they are pretty darn good, I grew up making them (girl scouts) -- once you make them separate them out and hide the remainders. We never used raisin
I have made these before and they are great. As gi-jane says: moderation. Eat one, then hide the rest. A bonus: if you eat one as a snack, you won't be hungry for a while. Enjoy!
My kids brought home a similar recipe from school except without the raisins & oatmeal. They called it peanut butter playdough. The kids would use candy molds or their hands to shape it then they could eat their creations.
It is EXTREMELY easy to eat more than you had intended so like coach said separate out into single servings and hide the rest.
I plugged it into the analyzer, and if you make 36 balls, then it'll be about 53 cal per ball -- that's without the raisins....
Thanks so much everyone! Yes, I def. know this would be a moderation thing and I will have to practice self control, but I think I will be good. (I plan on bringing 1-2 to work so the rest will be at home and I can't eat more even if I want to at that moment).
Coach K, I saw calorie ranges of 50-65 per ball on these so that sounds right.
I will leave the raisins out... put those in my cereal or oatmeal every morning anyway. And, I did see this as a great "family snack" or "kid snack" on a lot of recipe boards, but also found a variation of it as a protein snack on one board. I read wheat germ has a lot of protein and fiber.
OMG, just had 2 of these after they chilled in the fridge. All I have to say is: AMAZING! If you like peanut butter and honey you will love these. MMM!
MMMMM these sound yummy! When the recipe calls for instant dry milk is that just milk powder?
I want to make them!
Yes, I went to whole foods and got powdered non-fat milk! I think it's just because regular milk wouldn't produce a good consistency.
awesome. Thanks for the recipe. am going to tag this thread :)
Oh forgot to say... if you do the 1/2 cup wheat germ I would bring the 1 cup powdered milk down to 3/4 cup or add some more peanut butter and honey. The wheat germ made it a drier consistency making it hard for them to stick while rolling. I just added a little more peanut butter and honey b/c I was a little under on those ingredients anyway.
I used to make something like this for a quick lunch on the run. About 1/4 - 1/2 a cup of it kept me full for SO LONG! When I made it I didn't use powdered milk but used protein powder instead. Delish!
I'll have to try these since I'm on the go a lot. One of these with a banana after a workout sounds like a good restorative snack.
You think a scoop of whey protein would enhance it?
hehe ballllss ..it makes me giggle :D
...haha sorry, feeling a smidge punchy this a.m. :X
