A girl I know was trying to convince my best friend about this. She insisted that peanuts were included in the 'meat' section of the food pyramid and when told that I, a vegan, eat plenty of peanuts she responded with "Oh well then she's not a vegan. She eats meat." My friend argued further saying that there was no 'meat' section on the food pyramid but rather a protein section the girl came back with "No, all protein is meat. Peanuts are meat." Mm.. meatnuts.

I thought everyone would enjoy that as much as I did.Laughing

Hahah. There really are idiots out there.

Poor kids... obvilious to the fact that meat is, in fact, not the only source of protein. Sadly, I know someone who actually DOES think that. xD

Snort!  Good grief.

Lol! Well, they're the meat of the nut... maybe she was thinking of it that way?

yeah. she's nuts.

Hah, I know someone like that too.

Sadness.

And what part of the animal exactly do peanuts come from? :P

*shakes head*

From the peanutasaurus of course. Duh. Everyone knows that. Innocent

OH! I KNOW! PEANUTS ARE FOUND RIGHT SMACK BETWEEN  COW'S... nah, I'm 18, I shouldn't think this immature stuff is funny anymore.

... *giggles uncontrollably*

I know- I felt ridiculous even trying to argue that peanuts weren't meat.

There are lots of plant sources of protein, as we all know.  That girl was just uninformed and silly to try to argue the point.  Anyone with brains could cut her argument to shreds.

The Mayo Clinic has a very nice Vegetarian food pyramid, although it isn't vegan.  All you have to do to make it vegan is eliminate the dairy products and eggs.

oh god. thats hilarious. you just made my day :)

my grandmother still thinks chicken is vegetarian...*shakes head sadly*

Ok I know now that they're not in the meat group but when I was learning nutrition in High School, 18 yrs ago, they were included with the meat group. The meat group was then named protien rather than meat. All the pulses were in the group. It could be her mother might have been taught the same as me and has accidentally missinformed her.  Don't be too hard on her but let her know that the food pyramid has changed and peanuts has been changed to pulses etc.

I think what this really speaks to is the disconnect that people have with their food and where it comes from.  A lot of people don't want to think about the fact that meat is something that comes from the slaughter of animals while they are in the midst of eating the stuff.  That is why we have names like hamburger instead of just calling it dead cow.  My stepmother actually once insisted that hamburger wasn't meat and that there was no reason why I shouldn't eat it (I was a vegetarian at the time).

LOL! Thanks for that! Needed a laugh.

I think anidom's explanation makes sense though. We don't get taught such things at school here in the UK - They are starting to now. However UK is the fatman of Europe - our obesity rates are increasing rapidly and will probably match that of the US soon! So our kids need these lessons pronto!

It's really sad how misleading the nutrition information out there - published by our own government no less - is so misconstrued and well, blatantly incorrect.

LOL that's just what i was thinking Innocent

I think that made my day!
So there are people out there who think nuts (as in the seed-like food not er...*ahem*) come from animals? That's more than a little sad!

That's better than the people that ask (after I say I am vegetarian) "So you eat chicken?"

That's funny.....

But this isn't the first time I've heard that

wow.. I have NEVER heard that one before.
