Hi gang, this is a random question: regarding body type, which shape loses weight/fat more quickly, pear or apple shaped bodies? Do you find there is a difference? Nancy
I believe that neither type loses faster, it's just that apple-shaped will lose the weight around their middle first, while pear-shaped will lose the weight around their hips/thighs first. This is because the apple-shaped have the tendency to gather fat in their middle while pear-shaped have the tendency to gather fat in their lower body, so that will be the first area to go. Correct me if I'm wrong, though! :]
ibii i'm pretty sure you're wrong. it's the opposite. apple typically loses the middle last, and pear typically loses from the lower half last. apple will gain in their middle first however, and pear in the lower half.
and yeah, don't think any type particularly loses faster in general though.

I agree with pinthin...normally the first place you gain is the last place you lose.

Actually, for once i'm agreeing with pinthin to!
So what happens if you're hour glass >< ???
hour glass is pear shaped basically isnt' it???
What if your body shape changes while you're dieting? I could have
sworn I was an apple, but now, after losing 64 lb, I am severely
beginning to look like the Grimace! Put me in a purple, shaggy sweat
suit, and we'd look like twins! So obviously I am now a pear!
Neither body type loses faster, your body shape just determines where you lose/gain weight first. Apple shapes tend to gain weight around the middle first and that's the last place they'll lose it. Pear shapes tend to gain weight in the hips/thighs first, and that's the last place they'll lose it. And hour-glass is different from pear-shaped, because the hour-glass shape is as large on the top as they are on the bottom, and when they lose/gain weight, it will be about the same amount/timeframe from both areas. Hour-glass implies a balanced figure, with a chest and hips while pear-shaped implies a larger bottom and a smaller chest (relatively), just like the fruit.
i have no idea what body shape I am anymore!!! I've heard the term ruler before... haha I donno. I just look like a straight line... I'm built like my father... EXACTLY....my shoulder bones are the widest part of me then its straight down. I've been told I have the body of a 12 year old... (gee thanks *shakes fist* lol) are there other shapes than your common fruits?!
I thought that apple's lose weight faster and that people that store fat in their lower body have a harder time losing weight.
yeah, i don't think either one loses weight faster. the only thing i've heard is that apples will lose weight faster if they cut carbs more, while pears should focus on cutting fat. dunno if that is true at all, but it's something to consider.
You could be right barnes - i think i've heard something like that! you dont' carry weight any more or less depending on your shape but those are the last places you loose them for sure!! i'm pear shaped so i know - i never loose where i most want to!
In general, men carry most of their weight around their abdomen, whereas women carry it around their hips and thighs. However, whether male or female, abdominal or central fat, that which surrounds your organs to keep them warm, fed and protected, is related to a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions and diabetes, etc. However, this area of fat is also easier to lose b/c of a high turnover/metabolic rate of these areas. Pear-shaped people have less of a problem with negatively associated health risks, but it's also more difficult to lose fat from these areas--this ensures that nursing mothers will have the necessary amount of fat stores to continue to do so. As for individual people and "losing it last where you gain it first," I don't know. Here's just one link, but there are lots of others:

Very interesting comments and links. As for hourglass shapes - they look great no matter WHAT size. In that case, big really is beautiful, in my opinion! That's because I don't have a waistline and have always been envious...
Hmm guess I was a little confused about this, oh well, that's what everyone is here for! :D Anyway I guess I could say that I'm nearing an hourglass shape... because my measurements are like 41-33-41... and I seem to be losing all of the weight in my waist first. I used to be 42-38-42... so I thought I was considered an apple because my waist was so big, and that's the first place I lost it, but I guess that technically I'd be an hourglass (or close to it, as it seems to be going that way) Maybe once I lose some more I'll end up being pear/apple instead, I wonder? I have to agree that no shape loses it faster, though!
Oh, forgot to say I don't believe I'm a pear because my hips have always been really small.. well not "small," but the same as my bust instead of bigger than the bust like pear-shapes tend to be
well...less the shape of the body but how a part of the body plays into metabolism power...
you carry most of your lean muscle tissue in your legs (your calorie burning tissue) so a pear with some muscular thighs would lose faster than an apple with stick legs. ( i notice a lot of my apple friends have those skinny strait legs even with a tum)

According to www.dietitian.com, pear shapes have a more difficult time losing fat. Apple shapes have higher health risks.
aovermy - you are probably a pear shape. When a pear shape gains enough weight, yes, they do end up eventually packing on weight in the midsection. It's gotta go somewhere.
