Pedometer Recommendations?
I need to purchase a pedometer and have no idea what to look for. Do I need one that just shows distance walked and let CC's Activity log calculate the calories burned or get one that calcualates that also.
I'm leaning toward one that clips on my waist band instead of wrist watch style since I wear a watch on one wrist and silver bracelet on the other. Do I clip it on my side or in front of my waist?
Prices I've seen are from a cheap $2.50 to very expensive, $99.00 and while I want a nice device I don't want to spend money needlessly. I just want to clock my distance walked every day.
THANKS for your input!!!![]()
i just started using the nike+ipod. It seems to work well and I like that it keeps my history.
years ago I got a $15 pedometer at walmart it lasted about 2 weeks I then got one for $5 and its lasted years- if you just want to measure steps just get a cheap one -
yeah, the free one i got from a box of special K worked far better than than the expensive one that was given to me.
but i have to ask why you think you "need" a pedo? i don't think any are particularly accurate, unless they use GPS, and if you want to measure distance covered during walks and runs, there are far more accurate ways of doing so.
i used mine just long enough to figure out that i take about 100 steps a minute, on even terrain. for distance, i use the path tool in google earth.
but i have to ask why you think you "need" a pedo? Two months ago a joined a local TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) weight loss group....I've lost 21 pounds to date...YEA!!! I walk 5 miles a day in my neighborhood and know exactly how far that is to log for exercise on my diary sheet. I'm in a contest June-August for most exercise done. They measure the miles based on steps including ALL steps in a day. I mow grass and do a lot of work in my yard PLUS we are beekeepers so that's a lot of steps also. I never log any of that with TOPS even though I do add some of it here on CC in the activity log.
I need to get a more accurate daily miles record for the TOPS contest. They all use a pedometer but no one could tell me much about the functions of theirs other than it keeps up with the number of steps/miles walked a day. I would like to know the calories burned by pressing a button.
I appreciate everyone's input on this. Sounds like I just need to just purchase one and get moving ![]()
there was a lady I worked out with who had this thing kind of like the body bugg that kept track of steps calories burned etc but its also expensive. I don't think a pedometer can give you calorie burn unless its somehow a heart rate monitor too. I mean my "office" walking is nothing like my "walking walking" if the contest is just to get you moving then get a basic pedometer- if the pedometer needs to record or track steps you might need to invest some money.
In the pharmacy section of walmarts and other drug stores are usually selections of pedometers also look in the sporting goods section. I am not sure how a fancy one is any better than a cheapo one.
I bought this cheapy Sportsline blue plastic one at Walmart (under $10) a couple years ago. To set up you do put in your stride lenght and height and weight. I've watched and it does log each step...I was amazed at the accuracy for being so cheep. I used to wear it all the time (I walked a lot at old house) and was trying to get 10000 steps/day. As far as the calories burned. It does have this function, but I don't know the accuracy of that.
I recently found it at bottom of my junk drawer...it still works... and want to reset for current weight and see how it goes.
I walk 5 miles a day, 3 in the morning and 2 at night after supper. Where they keep telling me I need to add to the mileage chart is in the other chores I do every day or during the week. We have two houses and I use a push mower to mow the lawn at both houses...hubby uses the rider. It takes me 1.5 hours at home and 45 minutes at the river house. I would like to add those steps so I can factor them into the contest. I'm thinking daily errands may add nicely to the count also.
Again, I appreciate everyone's input. I bit the bullet today and purchased a mid priced pedometer that supposedly factors in calories burned even though I don't think I need that for the contest. I'll simply add the activity to my CC log and let this system figure what I've burned then add the miles to the TOPS chart and count it only as distance traveled. The shedding of pounds will speak for itself.
So far I've lost 21 pounds since mid April and want to keep moving to lose even more. I'm 50 pounds from my goal weight and determined to do it. Contest are great motivators for me so hopefully I'll be in the top 3 of my group ![]()

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
