Are Pedometers accurate for estimatig calories burned?
I have a cheapie (well, free actually) Special K pedometer that has a function you can choose to calculate how many calories you burned......I did a high impact dance aerobic workout for 60 minutes last night and it estimated that I only burned 115 calories....does this sound right? If so, that is not a lot of pay off for such a long rigorous workout!
if it asks you your age, sex, height, and weight -- it might be close to accurate -- BUT only for walking. A pedometer was never designed to determine the number of calories burned in an dance exercise -- it goes on steps and distance -- and time if you have a good one.
Regardless, it is only an estimate. A heart rate monitor will give you a much better and more accurate estimate, regardless of your exercise
That doesn't sound very accurate to me. Not sure of your stats, but I burn around 600 cals in 60 minutes of cardio.
I would invest in a HRM. ;)
