So I'm thinking of getting a pedometer but I don't know the first thing
about them.  I just need something simple, nothing really fancy
and something discreet enough that I could even possibly wear to the
office.  Any suggestions of which one to get?

I've been researching into pedometers as well, and so far, this one has been getting the best reviews.
I got mine at Walmart. They have the full array from really cheap to very high tech. I bought the one with the computer program and I don't even use it. I only use it to see the amount of calories and distance.
i got mine from JJB sports for 7 pounds 99p... its on sale. Just a stando one, calculates calores burnt and distance and has a stop watch on it too. thats all you need, dont go over board with all the high tech stuff!
I  have a very simple on that just counts steps. It is motion sensitive so you don't have to calculate the length of your stride. It works equally accurately for walking and running. It was $12 at Wal-Mart.
I concur with hagglewaggle.  I have that exact pedometer and it is EXTREMELY accurate once you calibrate it to the length of your normal stride per directions on the box.  I have compared the mileage to that found on Mapquest and it was right on!  Have had mine for a year and a half and have gone through two batteries and the smaller clip just broke on mine.  I replaced it with a Dritz mitten attachment clip used on kids' snowsuits so they don't lose their mittens.  Got 2 clips in a package for $1.69 at JoAnn's Fabrics.  The last batteries I got were very, very cheap at the Christmas Tree Shoppe.  I believe I got 6 button batteries for $1 or $2, and noted that they were still selling these in baskets near the checkout when I was there last week.

This item was being sold at bigger Wal-Marts, so you might want to check that first if you do not have enough to make a $25 order on Amazon.
Awsome.  You guys rock.  I'll be heading over to the mart of walls today or tomorrow and check them out.  Thanks!
