Pedometers { PLZ HELP }

Quote  |  Reply

So i got a new pedometer and i am thinking its way off.

I walked just about a mile, briskly. Now it says I took 3,660 steps, 0.366 Kilometers, and 18.3 Kcalories.

18 calories ??!!! Does that sound right to you guys and gals ??

Anyone have a suggestion on a GOOD, reliable pedometer ? Also, what do some of you use for walking shoes ?? This summer i'd like to walk / run / walk { HIIT } and i'm wondering what would be a good shoe.

Thanks !! Laughing

That sound like a broken pedometer to me 18kcal not a chance!!! I tend to buy cheap pedometer mostly as im prone tolose them I clip them on and they so easily come off.  The first time it was pretty expensive.

The excercise section on this site dose a pretty good kcal count for briskwalking if you knew the time it took you.

LOL If it's a decent pedometer you should have got instructions with it to calibrate your stride & possibly enter your weight.

Even my special K freebie pedometer needs a weight input to give an accurate caloric burn value.

I walk about 6k five days a week and just got new shoes. They're Asics gel something or other and I LOVE THEM!!

thank you for the replies.... Wink

Peds are terrific for keeping me motivated.  The placement on your waist can affect how some record steps.  My hubby swore something was wrong with his because it was counting just 20% of what mine was counting.  When he moved it a little closer to the front it counted 100% of his steps.  I agree with Iknowmychicken.  Every ped I've owned required some calibration involving length of stride or height (for distance). Some ask for weight too.  My fav one, (Omron, clip on, $14 at Walmart) calculates kcals using a formula of distance and time to determine pace.  It has separate counts for total steps & steps + minutes walked at a moderate pace along w/ mileage (or kms) and kcals.  This one has a 7 day memory (neat feature for folks like me that keep a log) and resets automatically to the next day at midnight.  I recently received a fancier Omron 'pocket' ped as a gift.  I love that I can toss it in a pocket (I was always knocking the other one off - too chubby) but it only retains total minutes walked at mod pace for one day. It keeps everything else 7 days. I have to remember to write my mins down daily for my logs or it's gone!

It's worth the investment if you are striving to reach a goal.  My goal was 10K steps a day w/ 30 mins at aerobic pace.  My ped gives me useful feedback which spurs me to do just a little more to ensure I reach my goals.  After 2.5 months, I finally achieved both goals for the entire month of April (200% of aerobic goal!.)  4 of my friends have now bought one too and never leave home without it. LOL.  Just keep on walking.

Thank you AuntMussy,  I will def check that one out at Walmart. Congrats on reaching some of your goals !!

Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?

In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
