Why do people dislike tall women?
I'm 5'10" and am pretty much banned from ever wearing heals because if I do, whenever I walk around in town, I get weird looks from everyone.
You know, those disapproving "You're wearing that?" looks.
Even my mum doesn't like me wearing heals.
And I'm not talking about giant platforms or 6" heals, I'm talking about 2-3" boots.
... I found these ankle boots while shopping today and they were the first shoes I had found that I actually liked, but of course I couldn't get them because when I tried them on, I suddenly became "stupid giant woman" and the people on the other side of the isle (particularly short girls by the way) looked up and gave me this weird look like "Oh my god, freak! why is she trying on the heals???"
Hmmph society is cruel to the tall.
or is it just me they don't like in particular?
**EDIT**
Was brave and brought a pair of boots I fell in love with in the store.
Photo in my gallery.
Still hesitant about what my mums going to say about them but I like them, can't want to wander around town in them!
... Might go out for lunch tomorrow, just to get out of the house and relax and have some "Me" time...
And show off my new sexy boots! ![]()

Oh hey, I just realized... it's kind of like telling a pretty girl she can't wear makeup because she's already pretty and she'd be TOO pretty, which is just stupid. If you think of it that way, those critical people seem pretty ridiculous.
I hardly wear makeup or heels for this reason (I'm 5'11''). It's hard to get past the disapproving stares from everyone. I wore a nice pair of espadrilles (maybe 2 1/2 in.) to work a few summers ago and had a girl say "why are you wearing those? As if you're not tall and ... (she was mumbling at this point) enough...". I think she realized how rude she was being. I consider her lucky to be able to wear flattering shoes and not have people react to her height. People should really be more sensitive... I wish she could walk a mile in my shoes ;).
I'm 5'11" and I dated a guy for six months that wouldn't LET me wear heels. He was the same height as me and hated it when I was taller than him. On more than one occassion he sent me back into the house to change my footwear because he wouldn't go out in public with me if I was taller.
I dumped that jerk!
Heels are the BOMB, sweetheart. Wear them, and wear them often. Other women will be jealous of your height, beautifully-arched calves and go-on-forever legs. Any man worth their salt (read: without major insecurity issues) will be extremely appreciative of this choice. You don't want a man that's insecure, anyways! Do what makes you feel beautiful, and if you've got to have those five-inch stillettos... Feel free to come borrow a pair from my closet. ;)
Wear them! I get frowned on because of my height and i'm not that tall (5'8) it's just the guys around here are mostly small, they have a real issue about me.
I'm 5'9", and I've never noticed anyone reacting to my wearing heels. I love being tall- my mother is short and I grew up watching her struggle to reach stuff/ reaching things for her. No thanks. Plus, I can carry a few extra pounds and people don't notice. ![]()
Wear them!! We short girls (5'4") are staring because we're jealous, think you look great, and would love to look so good in heels. Not that we don't look good too, but we almost have to wear heels so we don't look like stumps.
I personally hate the flats trend - ballarinas and such. They're cute as heck, but they make me look even shorter and squater.
I like tall women...but i prefer shorter women. Why you ask?
I see it this way...I like a girl who is my hight or shorter...i don't really want my girl to be taller than me....looks weird...hehehe.....and most women don't like short men either. petite women generally have ummmmm..."nicer curves"....from what i've seen it's harder for taller women to have that weight balance that i like. I DON'T like skinny ....so if your 5'8 and 160-170 LBS of fitness/soccer-type body....THAT IS AWESOME!!!!!
I say tall women....STRUT YOUR STUFF...men barely know what they want nowaday so don't even focus on them...lol...they look at you funny because they are scared ....you intimidate the short guy ...lol

5'4" is not short!!! ![]()
my goal when i was younger was to get to 5'3" - i never made it!
lol.. (5'1")
Original Post by drea99:I mean isnt Brooke Sheilds like 6 ft and NO ONE would ever tell her to not wear heels...
Tony Gentilcore would, and he'd make a pretty good argument against them too.
If I were 5ft11 I'd live in heels! I'd mow the lawn in heels...wash the car in heels...go walking around the block in heels!
I so wish I was taller! Tall women look so regal to me...

I'd be the idiot on the corner with the video Camera.....uuuhhhh..YOUTUBE ANYONE?
I am 6'0". I live in Miami, so because of the dense Hispanic population, I appear even taller. There are few people at my college that are taller than me. I always wear flats, unless it's a special occasion.
I do get a lot of looks. Sometimes it makes me feel insecure, but people assure me that the looks are jealousy or "I wish I were." I don't know if I'm alone here, but I almost feel discriminated against by women! I don't have a lot of female friends, and sometimes I think it may be because they don't like having a friend tower over them, whether it be for security or jealousy reasons.
People should wear what the want, no matter what others think. Wear heels if you like.
I am 5'1" and wish I was taller. Wear your stilettos and love every second of them. I'm jealous of your height!!
I never thought that people disliked tall women. :) I've always looked up to them!
Wow, fascinating reading all your replies.
My boyfriend, although shorter than me, doesn't care that I'm taller.
He says I should wear heals if I want to!
... But I don't think I could wear them around them because I do feel bad about being taller, since society says men should date women who are shorter than them.
Lol I certainly couldn't wear them around his family!
His mother is like, 5'3" or so and so is one of his aunts and his sister in law isn't very tall either!
If I were to wear heals around his mother, she would only come up to my elbow!!
... Ok, not literally.
But you get what I mean.
I'm thinking now that I'll have to simply buy 3 shoes now lol.
Fun heals for when I'm out alone or with my tall sisters, maybe just my boyfriend.
Then flat boots (there's some ok looking ones at the shoe shop) for around my shorter companions.
Then sneakers... For a completely off topic reason. (my current sneakers are dead)
Children are usually the only ones that are shorter than me. I don't mind though whatsoever at all. We joke around about it in good spirit sometimes. In honesty it's not even a real concern. :) I don't mind what shoes other wear either!
I suggest you wear whatever shoes that you want to wear! Period.

It wouldn't bother me at all. :) I'm the shortest one in our entire family on both sides. Meaning my mother and fathers both carry the tall gene. All of the women/girls in my family are from 5'6 to 5'11. We actually think my two little nieces are going to hit or pass the six foot mark. :) Short for a man in our family is considered 5'11 they're normally 6'1- 6'2-6'3- or 6'4. Normal short for a woman is 5'6 in our family. People say I fall back after my grandmother on my mom's side. She was so short.... 5'6 exactly. Lol!
An extreme short in my family = me. Lol! I'm used to people being taller than me. I'm confident in myself so others height doesn't directly affect me. Unless: I'm sitting behind them at the movies and their blocking my view, etc. Lol!
Quote: "There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you." Wear w/e shoes you want! You can't do anything to honestly shrink your height. I think you should stop with the silly tactics and just use/embrace it.
btw: Thank you. I <3 my baby girl. She's getting so big! She's adorable. I have to stop myself short because I could go on and on about my daughter. Lol! According to the growth chart percentile 95% of children her age are bigger than her. Her head is bigger than 95% of kids her age though on the flip side. =-P It's consistently been that way every since she was born. The doctor always says :"Look at how nicely she's following the curve, that's perfect!" She was Small for gestational age (SGA.) That's the term used to describe a baby who is smaller than the usual amount for the number of weeks of pregnancy. She was full term and perfectly healthy at 5lbs. I may be bringing the short gene back to our family!
Anything over 1-1/2" to 2" gets uncomfortable for me because sometimes I have to duck >< It sucks if your shower head is so low you have to duck. Yeah, some people will say the world is made for 6', I'd disagree with that. Have fun washing dishes ><
