When did people start noticing?

Quote  |  Reply

When did people start noticing that you lost weight? I want to know specifically from shorter girls, but everyone is welcome to answer.

I have lost 9lbs since May without really trying. My SO says its pretty obvious that I've done something but thats probably because he sees more of me than most people Wink. He says I don't look as bloated as I used to. No one around me has said anything but I can see changes in my body. My arms are thinner, my thighs look better and my belly is a little flatter. My arms and legs are always the first to go and my belly is the last but I tend to lose/gain weight pretty evenly which is probably why I let myself get this bad in the first place.

It took me about ten pounds to show progress. I'm 5'2", so quite short also. At fifteen pounds, the weight loss becomes very obvious.

But when I started to gain twenty pounds over the past year, none of my friends/family members said anything. I guess they were trying to be considerate.. lol.

I may be too tall at my 5'4 (it would be a first!) but I can say that for me, people have already begun noticing, even if I haven't lost a whole lot of actual weight. It's mostly due to me having gotten more toned, I think. Not many people have commented on it so far, but those who have are people who are close enough to me to be able to get away with commenting on my weight in a positive way without it sounding completely wrong, so I'm not too worried about that.

But, in terms of weight, I'd say after 8-10 pounds, for real. That's when it became too noticeable for the people in my life not to comment on it.

When I lost 15 pounds and wore smaller clothes for a change. You guys have to remember that clothing you wear makes a big difference on how you look.

Unfortunately I'm at the stage where everything is a little lose but not enough to make me go out and buy a new size. Plus sadly like some overweight people, I was wearing clothes that were a little too small because I was in denial of my weight gain.

I probably lost about 6 kilograms in 6 weeks (from 64 to 58), so those who didn't see me during that time really noticed. But those who saw me every day didn't really notice till I changed the way I dressed.

Um, I've lost 7.5kgs, and NO one has really noticed much. I've not really noticed much, just a small thing... like the possibility of a jawline under all this double chin. Over the next six weeks I am hoping to have lost 3.7 kilos , which is achieveable.. and would get me out of the 90's, and just into the 80's.

Fingers crossed, SOMEONE notices.

It also (I think) has to do with what kind of weight you lose. If you just lose weight-weight, people might not notice until it's up in 15-20 pounds, but if you lose fat but gain muscles, but stay on the same-ish sort of weight, then they will probably notice even after just a few pounds, just because you've gotten slimmer.

I also depends on how much you have to lose. If you're fairly big, it'll take longer for someone to really notice because you only lose so many inches around the whole of you, but if you've "only" got 15-20 pounds all told to lose, then people will probably notice sooner.

How you carry your weight will make a difference.  Someone who loses weight pretty evenly all around will not seem as different as someone who drops 10 lbs off their rear :)

For me - I was 152 (now 116), I think people really started noticing within the first 15 lbs.  But it all came off my belly.  I still wore the same pants size but my appearance changed a lot.  Within 20 lbs people started complaining that I was "getting too thin".  Far from the truth!

But - weight is a sticky issue.  People do not want to be insulting and complimenting you on your weight loss is basically acknowledging you were fat.  Which many people dont want to do.  They notice, but dont say anything at all.  But once it is very obvious you have lost weight they start complimenting you because they can no longer avoid it as it is just too darn obvious.

Funny though, even though my biggest appearance change was off my belly, when people started complimenting me they would say "oh, have you lost a little weight?  Your face looks thinner."  My face did not really look that much thinner - but they dont want to say "oh you lost weight - I can see it in your @$$."  LOL

I definitely agree with 'tinkerbell'.  It's a matter of how much you have to lose.  People first noticed my weightloss after losing 25 lbs.    I think of it as the percentage of weightloss.  After losing roughly 10% of your bodyweight, your appearance begins to change and people take notice.  Also, when your clothes begin to look baggy, people can't help but notice your clothes don't fit you like they used to!

Congrats to all that have lost, it's a major achievement!

People started noticing that I had lost weight when I became TOO skinny. My neck and hip bones started sticking out, and it was quite nasty! I am still skinny, but I am at a much healthier weight due to an improved diet and exercise.

I'm 5'4" and lost 5% of my body weight the first few months of this year.  My workplace was having a weight loss challenge and I was one of the top losers for the first month ;)

I was a little discouraged b/c nobody seemed to notice although my clothes fit much better and I noticed.  Once it came out in an email, a lot of people commented and congratulated me...one lady mentioned that she had noticed but wasn't sure what to say.  I think the whole subject is a bit delicate since many folks don't want to approach the subject of weight at all for fear of hurting your feelings.  Which stinks...that encouragement is important to me to keep going!

Good luck and keep it up!!

My boyfriend's mom noticed after 6-7 pounds. I've now lost 12 and no one else has noticed. Of course, the only people I see are my family, my boyfriend's family, and my coworkers. I'm hoping my sis might notice a difference when I go see her in a week. Or that my friends notice when I go back to school in 2 weeks. *crosses fingers*

I'm 5'1" and went from 136 to 109. People who saw me with some frequency didn't really comment on it. I was losing at about a pound per week so I don't think it was really noticeable for them until I was at around 120. I think by then my old clothes were clearly baggy and the few new clothes I allowed myself to get made the changes more obvious.

People who haven't seen me in a while, like my hair dresser I saw last weekend, really notice and I find their responses funny because I don't feel like I look that different.

I think a lot of people notice, but just don't say anything.  Especially guys. :)  We're always afraid (rightfully so) about saying anything that could be mis-interpreted.

^ this is what happened to me too.  I'm 5'1", and the first thing that changed obviously was the way my pants fit.  At first everyone was quiet/approving of the change, but just today one of my co-workers told me I was going to end up "underweight" if I kept losing.  I still have 9lbs. to go before I'm even in the middle of the BMI range for my height (115 lbs is my goal) - but a lot of taller people seem to have problems visualizing that weight on a smaller person.  I found that most people really don't know what BMI or a "healthy weight" is, so they may be shocked or even angry when you say real numbers - try to be vague, and you'll dodge most negative comments.  People can also get jealous of weight loss, and might not say anything nice about your progress because they're struggling with their own weight.

I've lost 9 pounds so far, and I can see it in my arms, but I wear long sleeves a lot so people probably aren't noticing.  I'm 5'3" and started at 175.  I'm hoping that by the time I get down to 155 people start noticing! But no one's noticed so far... I don't care though.  I'm doing this for me; not them.

I moved to new york and lost 40 pounds while I was there, my roommate's mother commented on it a few times but nobody else seemed to notice.

When I came back to LA, I got a lot of "congratulations on not being fat anymore", which is nice but I'm not entirely sure how to respond.

I've lost 27 lbs in about 9weeks and only one friend noticed a couple of weeks back - but nobody else has noticed - not even my best friend! My start weight was 226lbs  and I'm 5'2" so may it's not as noticeable on me. Also, I think when you're heavy, people don't like to mention your weight even if it is going down. I'm not really bothered that people aren't noticing or saying anything I'm just glad that I'm down 2 clothing sizes and I feel better about myself.

Keep up the good work and feel proud of your achievements.

I moved to new york too! Central new york though.

Surprisingly, a lot of people have noticed and I am 5'8" and I have only lost like 10-15 pounds.  It's so weird.  A coworker stopped and stared and me yesterday and asked "have you lost a ton of weight?".  It almost makes me wonder just how bad I looked before haha.  Yeah I don't know why so many people have noticed but they have.  Probably in part because my waist gets really small when I lose weight but I still haven't really lost it in the butt/thighs where I need to!  Hopefully the next 10 lbs. will take care of that and then I will be at my goal!
