I've answered another one of your posts- here goes for number 2. I agree about diet 'foods' not helping health in the long run.  I HAVE to get some weight off these bones and joints.  This body is aging and I can not imagine dealing with this pain in my 60s, 70s and whatever else I get.  This means that I am trying to change my eating habits- and living on diet shakes and plastic food is just not going to stay with me for the long haul.  I managed to walk up and down a hilly trail today with my hubby- about an hour's worth- and by the time we got home I did not want a diet cup of yogurt.  I wanted food- like a banana and a small piece of cheese and a bit of bread.  Fuel, in other words.  Moderation is the key and I am not sure I can manage- that's where support comes in.  Like I have said before, I have been told by medical folks that fake sweeteners and corn syrup is only going to gum up my inner works so if I truly want to go for my goal of better health, I had better forget about using those as a crutch.  I am very aware that I am living an alternative lifestyle in this day of mac and cheese and Hamburger Yuck Helper meals.  Eventually I will figure out about proteins- even now I am finding chicken breast to be better to eat than ground beef- pricey but better.  Thanks for the post and good luck on your journey.

This is my 1st post.... I went to a new doctor for a refill of HBP (High Blood Pressure) pills. I've had HBP for about 8 years now & my 40th Bday will be in about 3 months. He said if I could take the weight off I might be able to get off of the pills. We also talked about the weight making me a good candidate for being diabetic. When I told him that both my parents are/were diabetic & 3 of my 4 grandparents his eyes got really big. He stated that if I wanted to see my HS Freshman (my baby) someday have kids we need to work on some kind of weight loss.

We discussed hunger & some of the dieting issues I have. He put me on a diet of eating every 4 hours 300 calories. He said to do the best I could & not beat myself up if I got off of the diet but to just take a deep breath & not to stress over it & get back to it. He also stated that I needed to eat rather I'm hungry or not.

He also wants me to walk up to 30 minutes a day. I work an office job & go to college, both full-time. I'm also a mom & a wife so I'm up to walking 10 minutes a day & take my son (who has some eating issues) with me.

The hardest part is eating when I'm not hungry. I thought the hardest part would be sticking to the 300 calories but I've never gone higher than 350 but don't stress over it. Life is too short for negativity....

So I'm trying to get back to my weight before I started having kids so I have 75 lbs to go. It gets frustrating but it took 15 years to get to this so I keep telling myself that Rome wasn't built in a day & I won't loose 75 pounds over night...

Around the first of August something just sort of clicked for me, and I decided that I had to lose some weight and start exercising.

About 20 years ago, I screwed up my back.  This got into a vicious circle of any time I would start exercising, my back would flare up and I'd quit.  At the same time, I had gotten quite lazy about my eating habits and rationalizing that I was eating healthy, although I wasn't paying any attention to caloric intake.

I'm 59, 6 feet tall and had gotten up to 223.

Went to the doctor and got some medication to take care of the back pain.  First three weeks simply took the medication (2X/day) with no other changes.  For three more weeks took the medication (1X/day).  That got me to around the middle of August.

At that point, I started with a goal of about 1600 calories/day.  I did the treadmill for around 200 calories, in about 30-40 minutes.

As of today, I am now down to 195.5.  This morning the treadmill (hills) was about 375 calories in about 55 minutes.  I try not to do anything with speed because that only aggravates my back issues.  Am now only taking any back pain medication sporadically.

Needless to say, my doctor has been impressed.

I feel great.  Hoping to lose another 10-15 pounds.
Health is the great motivator for me!!

I think what "triggered" my changes was the knee pain I had started feeling while climbing stairs, and the worsening of my asthma.

Both have been greatly improved so far.

Now I want to lower my risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes (I'm in 2nd year med school, this is exactly what I am learning about right now). My goal is not a dress size, it's a BMI risk category. :)

Health is the BEST reason to want to change your diet and lifestyle!!

hi i am kinda new here and this is my first post. it's kinda funny because i came here to make a post very similar to this one, and then i saw that someone already did it Smile

i am hoping to lose weight, but i see that as just a side effect of what i am trying to accomplish overall. i have always been very interested in nutrition and excercise. about 2 years ago i started getting into yoga and meditation for stress relief. this gave me a whole new attitude to food. i now try to eat as "clean" as possible. i eat organic whenever possible and i don't eat hydrogenated oils, preservatives, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and i try to avoid packaged and processed foods. i also try to only eat meat that has not been given antibiotics or rbgh and has been raised in a cruelty free environment. i like to cook and am a big supporter of CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture).

anyway, the point of all of this is that, while i feel that these options are the healthiest choice for my body, they may not always be the lowest in calories. to get around this, i focus a lot on portion control, so that i can still stick to my caloric goal. i do sometimes feel frustrated with this site though because it seems like there are no other people like me. it seems like most other people are just interested in lo-cal diet "food". are there any other people like me? want to start a group?

Hear, hear! I'd love to be thinner, but my main motivation is health.  High cholesterol runs in my family- all of my grandparents died of heart disease, and my dad had triple-bypass surgery a year ago at age 68.

Dad's emergency surgery scared me and my siblings sort-of-straight, but the big shock came six months ago when my 37-year-old husband died quite suddenly of a massive heart attack.  He'd put on some weight, and he smoked, but he by no means looked like someone who was about to drop dead.

That made me realize that I needed to make some big changes, not just for my future health, but for my well-being right now!

My health and physical capabilities, in general, are my reasons for losing weight.  Appearance as well, but what good is an appearance if you aren't really healthy, right?
