Getting My Period Back? :(
I haven't had my period for two months- one more time missed and its officially amenorrhea. So...what do I do to get my period back? I lost some weight during the summer (causing the loss of my period?) , but I gained it back purposely for this reason. My bmi is now ~19.5. Should I gain more? Then I'd weigh more than where I started. When should my period start again? Me and my mom are really nervous.
Sometimes, we miss a couple of months for no real reason. You may yet have your period. However, we can lose our period for, equally, a few reasons. Stress, overexercise, a lack of fats and extreme weight loss can all cause it. Some medications, like the birth control pill, can also cause it. While you are of a healthy weight you may want to review your diet: are you eating enough fat? And of your life, how have you been feeling lately? How rapid was your weight loss? How many calories do you consume? How much do you exercise and how often?
This happened to me several years ago after I had lost about 30 lbs in a relatively short period of time. Your body may not have enough fat to carry out the menstrual process. Although BMI is a good tool to track weight loss, it does not take body composition into account. I would definitely go to the doctor to check it out because this is an area you don't want to mess up....
this also happened to me when i lost weight. i still don't have mine but i've started eating more healthy fats and protein and now i'm ovulating and have pms symptoms, so i think aunt flow will come visit me soon haa. anyways, i think you first need to give your body some time to adjust to the new you. try increasing your fat & protein intake and cut back on the exercise. if that doesn't bring it back after a couple of months, then you should check with your doctor to see whether or not you need to gain weight. but i would first try giving your body time and help it naturally adjust.. best of luck!
Well, I'm hearing the same thing from all of you, so thanks everybody. Also, my mom is going to make an appointment with my doctor anyways, because she's really scared too. I hope my doctor can help. Thanks guys!
Hi. I have not had my period for 1 year and 3 months -___-. I have gone to the doctor and they found everything to be "normal." I used to have my periods when I was 120lbs but when I exercised less... right now, I am 117lbs and I am trying to eat more healthfully and cut back on my exercise to let my body know it is not starving...so maybe you are not eating enough for your exercise?? I think this contributes to my problem also but my BMI is kind of low so I am trying to gain. Good luck!!
Actually...I don't exercise too much. From walking about 2 miles a day total to and from school, and my horseback riding, I would just classify in the light to moderately active. Horse back riding might sound like a lot of exercise, but I've been doing it all my life, so I'm really at ease with it. I never work up a sweat, get my heart rate going (unless I fall off - lol), or wake up sore the next day.
Getting your period is vitally important to your bone health on the long term. WHen you get your period, the hormones released also regulate bone growth. I was underweight for a while in high school and lost my period for ~17 mo. My doctor/parents had me get a bone scan to check the damage done to my bones during this period (haha, no pun intended) of my life, and while the scan showed my bone density to be within the normal range, there are definitely long term affects on your body despite the "official" scan results. Specifically, I'm a xc runner on a DI team and right now about 1/3 of our girls team is injured with stress fractures, including myself. The commonality within the group is that we've all lost our periods for some length of time previously/some still don't get their periods. A stress fracture is when your bone cracks, but doesn't break all the way through. True non-runners with a history of ammenoria (the fancy word for not getting your period) might not be at such a high risk for stress fractures, but my team's case highlights the fact that losing your period for any length of time has serious implications for long-term health. Also, while post-ammenoric non-runners might not be at risk for bone injuries within years of their ammenoria, they could face dire risks later in life when their bones are under more stress - from pregnancy, old age, what have you.
Basically getting your period is SO important for your health - you just need to get it - it's not a superfluous bodily process - it's crucial to your health as a female human being.
For advice on how to get it back: first of all, you do need to be at a healthy weight. Perhaps this will mean, as you said, being at a higher weight than you were before. This is ok. Your body knows what a healthy weight for it is - whether or not you're getting your period is a good indicator of this. ALSO, make sure you're getting your period NATURALLY, i.e. without using birth control or hormones; these mask the symptoms of ammenoria while still leaving crucial problems unresolved (i.e. they induce your body into getting your period, but since you're body isn't doing this process itself, it fails to release all the hormones/whatnot that affect other parts of your body - like your bones, etc.).
Some girls on my team, even once they were at healthy weights, were still unable to get their periods. One of them was telling me how once she started incorporating more fat in her diet, she was able to get it back. Fat gets a really bad rap in the dieting world, but it's really important for a healthy diet. Your body needs fat to carry out different processes and also needs to keep a certain amount stored on your body in order to be healthy; if you don't eat enough fat, your body will just convert other energy sources (i.e. carbs, protein, sugars - everything else) into fat to use instead. So help your body out by giving it the good fats it needs - like dairy fat (we drink whole milk), fat from nuts, meat fats, and fish fats (you can even get supplements for this that work really well). I'm not suggesting you eat all fat all the time - but our bodies do need it and depriving your body of it will just cause complications - like continued ammenoria even when you're at a healthy weight.
Sorry this was such a long post, but I'm really passionate about this topic since it's been such an issue on my team as of late. I hope this helps!
I stopped getting my period for id say about 4 months I had stopped taking bc around february also the time of when I started eating healthy. When i wasnt getting my period we thought it was normal bc sometimes that happens when you stop birthcontrol. Then I went to the doctor and he said it was bc i was too thin. I actually didnt get my period till i was a sophmore bc i was too thin naturally. Then i stopped getting it senior year bc of weight loss and malnutrition. When the doctor told me he was concerned i gained 10 pounds eating everything in sight. Then i went back and bc and went to college and that month i got my period. Would I have gotten it either way going on the b.c or does that mean my body is healthy enough to get it now? Also girls on my volleyball team werent getting their periods too so i thought i was okay but i def wasnt. Go to the dr and get checked out bc everyone is diff and may not be getting their periods for many diff reasons.
I lost weight 2 summers and go, and i went 2 YEARS without a period. My period came back about 5 months ago once, and then last month i got it also. I'm extremely worried, because they went from absent to irregular.
I went to the doctor's, and they prescribed a hormone birth control pill with progesterone to regulate my periods. However i'm undergoing an eating disorder, and didn't want to take them because they may cause weight gain : (
I don't know if I want to take birth control...
I'm pretty young and I'm not sexually active. If I told my mom I wanted to go on the Pill, she'd assume it was because I wanted to have unprotected sex. She's just that type of person who jumps to conclusions and never gives up on them.
But...(TMI) I am starting to get this mucus-y stuff down there that I used to get between periods. Is this a good sign?
I know how you feel, i'm actually still a virgin and was worried about the same thing. So i told my parents about it(even my dad, i know, embarassing) and they went to the doctors office with me. You just need to let them know, that you are not sexually active and tell them you've been have absent periods.
Oh and yeah, i still have discharge too...but i don't know why. I think it's because my body thinks i'm going to have my period, so it makes the eggs and everything, but then the period just doesn't come, so i'm stuck with discharge and that's it.
Don't start birth control. It is really a quick fix for this type of problem and does not get to the real issue. It will take time but make sure you are eating enough and take it easy on the exercise. It is going to be tough but you have to do what your body needs. Irregular periods are perfectly fine, as long as you are getting it, thats the most important thing. Think about when you got your period the first time, it was irregular and eventually you got on a schedule. That is what may happen to you now so just give it time and everything will fall back into place. It is tempting to start birth control to regulate yourself but avoid it if you can, especially since you arent sexually active. Increase the healthy fats and good carbs in your diet and definitely continue to exercise. Just don't do strenuous workouts that will stress your body further. Keep it at a fast paced walk or slow jog and mostly focus on improving your diet. You will start to feel better and your cycle will regulate itself, our bodies are very good at healing themselves. Stay strong and don't start BC!
