how I got my period back...

Quote  |  Reply

Ive been reading a lot of forum posts about ladies who havent been receiving their period because they are underweight, i had the same problem but made some lifestyle changes and got it back this week.

Previously i had been working out 6 days a week for at least an hour and restricting my calories to below 1500. I hadnt gotten my period since July SO what i did was i took two weeks off from the gym and began eating at LEAST 1500 calories and sure enough I got it back. I feel much happier and healthier now!

GOODLUCK!

Yeah, healthy females naturally have more fat than healthy males. We need cushioning to help carry and protect a baby. Sucks to be thought of as a living incubator, but whatever.

And what do you think boobs and bums are made from, hot air? :P

Hey girls,

I was just wondering if anyone has managed to get their period back while still working out? Like many of you, I dropped some weight too fast and I am not underweight for my height, but I am on the light-weight side (100-105 pounds, it fluctuates, and I'm only 5'0) but I think my body just went thruogh some major adjustments and also  I cut out practically fat completely last year which was completely stupid on my part. I think I may have developed a semi eating disorder last year during my freshmen year in college, and with a combination of stress, my period just completely stopped. Luckily, I realized I needed to change my ways fairly quickly and hopefully I have not done enough damage to my body yet. I am really working on recovering -- even though I may not be underweight according to my BMI, I still need to recover mentally in many ways. I've been adding in a lot more fat into my diet, but I've always run cross country and still would love to be able to run 30-40 minutes about 5 times a week. I've only recently been adjusting my diet so I don't know if it will work yet, but has anyone succeeded in getting their periods back while still working out? Oh, and on a side note, I eat at least 2000 calories a day. Any feedback would be welcome!

Can I ask what everyone's BMI is/was when they got their period back?

mine was still is pretty low at 18.3
Wo! I wish I would have found this forum earlier...I haven't had a period (w/o Birthcontrol on and off) for about 2 1/2 years. In fact, I've only had ONE, yes ONE period EVER and I didn't start until the day of my 17th birthday (crazy huh?). Doctors always said they weren't concerned b/c it was pretty normal for active/thin/lean teens to start late. But after that one that was already at such a late age, that was it. At first it's like GREAT-no periods! I know it's dangerous for the bones, but what I care most a/b is the fertility. How does that effect me? Ive been tested...down there...and I'm now 10 pounds heavier than I was in high school (5'7 116-120 pounds) and I'm sure I get around 1600-2000 calories a day (i'm struggling w/ bingeing so sometimes it's a lot more). HOWEVER, I know that I tend to eat a very safe diet on the "good" days, very low fat. Does anyone have any suggestions? I mean, I'm thin but not too thin and healthy. If I don't get it-do I really need to go on the pill?
Every female older than the age of 15 should menstruate, period (ooh I made a pun! :P). Females need a certain amount of body fat to be healthy.

If you don't menstruate, it is a signal from your body saying that you are not healthy enough to carry a child. Even if you don't think you'll be having kids any time soon, it's still a bad signal to go without a period.

Hey! I just joined!

I haven't had my period in almost half a year now, admittedly i did struggle with eating disorders and ended up losing around 48 pounds. Now, i've started eating a lot more and exercising regularly. I'm concerned about when I'll get my period back, and have considered the pill, but that's all artificial... so i was wondering, would it be best to start the pill either way, just because then at least i'd be getting my period back? Or should i wait it out just to see if i get it back as i gain weight? coz i'm really concerned about infertility, i know i'm only sixteen, but i don't wanna do anything stupid now that could mess up my life later on... so can someone please reply if they have had a similar experience or have any knowledge of the positive/negative effects of taking birth control as a means of getting your period back?

Can someone PLEASE reply??? Not to sound desperate or anything... but yea, i kinda am...

hey, i didn't take the pill to get mine back.. i just waited. i lost it for about 7 months (ed) then once i started to self recover about 4 months ago i upped my calories, fat intake and protein intake slowly.. the fat intake is what helped the most. i also cut back on the exercise for a little bit and that helped. anyways, i got it back last month.. and it felt like the first time lol. i was soooo happy!

just be patient and do it the natural way. give your body some time to get healthy again and you'll be ok. good luck :)

AARGGGG! *cry* i want my period.......my friends think im weird lol

im STOPPED exercise, i enjoy food to the point where i EAT JUNK AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY! im recovered andhave returned to my childish food-for-fun ways, but just eating more nutriously and enjoying that YAYS! FOR MULTIPLE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTIES AND AN EXCUSE TO ENJOY COOKIE DOUGH!

i love life! but.......mines taking it's time coming back........i am ssoo tempted to exrcise, so as i may eat more, and maybe loose some of that leftover guilt, i feel more enthusiastic after jogs too........ but im detemined, can others share their stories with me????

Maybe you could cut back a little on the junk food and eat more nutritious foods?  Perhaps it would take a little less stress off the body to digest and absorb the junk and focus it more on healing yourself and getting your hormones straight?

I have a question say I was very underweight at 119 at 5 10 and now im 133 at 5 10 which is very close to my highest weight. I stopped getting my period for 4 months and I thought it was bc I had stopped bc. Then I had to go back on it ...well the doctors thought it was a good idea. IF i have had it back for almost 5 months on bc does that mean Im at a healthy weight. If i was at a low weight would i still get it bc im on bc? let me know

i think if you lost your period for a while then youll probably need a doctor to prescribe meds, even numerous times until you get it regularly.

Holbee-id suggest going to the doctor, dont stop the junk if you dont mind it, everyone eats junk...

Hey! Thanks so much for replying!!

Yeah i guess i'll try this, i'm still really nervous about how long it will take though... Just wondering, what exactly do you mean by more "fat intake", coz apparently i'm supposed to eat complex carbs, and a bunch of people have been saying protein, but i'm kinda confused about what to eat specifically... So does anyone have any tips of stuff they ate that they think helped them get their period back?

Will eat anything! :)

also, not to be awkward or anything, but since i've been gaining weight, i've had      -- here comes my awkward attempt to describe it-- like a white gooey thing coming out of my "clamburger" (as my sister calls it...no kidding she really does call it that!) ... it's kinda like the stuff i used to get before i first got my period... if anyone actually knows what this is, and if its a sign that i might actually get my period back soon, can you let me know please, ??? thanks!! :)

Honey, don't eat anything... you just need to eat healthy fats. Examples: nuts, avocados, flaxseed, and yes I recommend wheat germ because it is very healthy. getting your period back is very important even if it will cost you to gain some extra pounds. I got my period back after I gained weight. not nice but I learnt a lesson that I should add fats to my diet.

that white stuff means you're ovulating.. which is great! that happened to me too before i got my period. i would ovulate but then not get anything for a while. until one month it came! so stay patient, it's on the way :)

as for the stuff i ate: almonds, peanut butter, fish.. a lot!

YYYEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! OMFG! of course! the white stuffs!!!!!!!!!!! i've had it a couple of weeks, YESS MY PERIOD WILL RETURN IM NO LONGER 'UNHEALTHY'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! i am sssooo starting a thread

Hey

I haven't had my period in nearly 4 years now (I'm 17, got them at 11) due to having anorexia. I've had lots of treatment, and now after a relapse I'm nearly at my target weight.

My BMI will be (in hopefully 2 weeks!!) 18.5 and that is what I'm aiming to maintain at. I know its the low end of healthy, but its much better than the 12 i was at my lowest!

I eat lots of healthy fats (almond nut butter, olive oil, seeds etc) and also a fair amount of other fats (meaning I do eat desserts and cheese now!) so I dont think fats much of an issue. I don't even do that much exercise, I'm slowly building up to my usual routine.

So what else do you think I can do? I'm getting desperate as its been so long without them...

And, just thought I'd add, that my doctor and team don't think tablets are a good idea, because they want them to come back properly.

Thank youu !

xxx

its different for everyone but i got mine at 16.6 ( 103 lbs)eek. im not sure if that was healthy or not. i just took these omega three ratio capsules of fish oil capsules my doctor gave ( i kind of O.D. on them) (shh) hahah no but seriously i took three after each of my six to seven mini meals and along with a healthy diet and a pre-natal my hair stopped falling out and got shiny ,my period came back in about 3-4 weeks. from a major relapse. i didnt gain much weight either nor did i count the calories in the capsules. i just pretended they didnt have calories i guess but it did me good. i also swam for 30 minutes each morning i guess that helped circulate blood through my body. i do consider swimming more of a womens sport and that it gets your hormones back into tune. i just got that feeling.

Ok so awkwardly, did get the white stuff before, but now it's stopped for like 2 days,

then i was reading and apparently its normal to get 'brownish stuff' coming out of there, which i did, but only a really little amount. So I'm really confused? Does anybody have any idea what i can do about getting my period back faster? Coz i've been eating lots of carbs, nuts etc. but i can't seem to get it back?? :( Also, does stress and lack of sleep have anything to do with when you get your period back? coz i'm in the ib (which is the most ridiculous diploma ever, but its required if we (europeans) want to go to college in Europe) and i get around 4-6 hours of sleep a night, plus im really stressed all the time. Is there anything i can do to improve my health even if i don't have time to sleep??

Also, happy almost christmas! :)
