no period after bc?

Quote  |  Reply
I recently decided to stop taking my Orth-Tri-Cyclen because the hormones were making me crazy. I had been on birth control for about a year. After I stopped them, I had a light period. Now it has been two months and I haven't had a period at all. I took a pregnancy test just to make sure, and it came out negative. Have any of you experienced this? Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Hormones are crazy little things. Some people have no problems with hormones and have regular periods no matter what. Others have more sensitive hormones that react more to change.

See your doctor or gynecologist. No one can accurately diagnose you over the internet.

I was having a horrible time with my hormones. PMS from hell too. Maybe getting my period for one day and then 40-42 between I just turned 40 and am too young to go through menopause. I also get ovarian cysts, which make your hormones even more out of wack. so I went to my Acupuncturist and I drink this tea 2 x a day, go and get needles once a week and I am back on track. I feel great too. My PMS isn't anywhere near what it was and My cycle is about 27 days now.

I also heard that eating meat with hormones can mess up a sensitive system. So eating hormone free chicken, fish and beef is worth a shot.

Ahh, birth control. You don't get a period when it's working, you don't get a period when it's not working. Does that seem crazy to anyone else?

I think you should take another pregnancy test. They're not completely reliable, and sometimes give off false positives/negatives.

I say give it three months - if your period still doesn't show up then speak with your MD. My work focuses on hormones and the menstrual cycle, we have a three-month rule. If your nervous, talk to your doctor sooner. They may be able to give some info over the phone.
Thank you all for your responses! They have been quite helpful!

The same thing happened to me when I stopped taking them for a month. Not only was I not getting a period, I felt constantly bloated like I would normally feel the week before. The not knowing when it was going to come and the weight gain made me crazy & I ended up going back on it. Not very helpful to you, but just thought I could relate. Everyone I talked to about it when it was happening said to give it a few months. Your body has been used to get these hormones regularly and now it has to regulate itself back to making its own. Not sure if it's all true, but if you can, I would say just wait it out a little while (if you can.) I couldn't.

Is weight GAIN a normal side affect of going off? I experienced slight weight gain when I began taking the pill, so I'm hoping the same thing doesn't happen now that I've stopped.

Hey, I'm in the same position as you, I was on it for about a year and I came off in February - at the start it seemed like I was getting a period straight away but it only lasted a day or two and since then, nothing. I went to my doctor and also the sexual health centre and both of them said not to worry, just give it 6 months. It could be because I have lost weight though - my BMI is 17.5 and apparently its supposed to be at least 19 before you get periods...

But they said it takes a while for your hormones to regulate themselves again, usually within 3 months but its not uncommon for it to take longer, sometimes up to a year.. so if you're a healthy weight I wouldn't worry just yet Smile

It took mine 5mths to return when I was ttc my 2nd baby. HTH?
