Why is my period not coming back?...please help!

Quote  |  Reply

Hey sorry that this is yet another period question but im getting really worried at this stage...I lost my period when I was underweight and had an ed. When my mum brought me to the doctor he obviously told me to gain weight and when I asked about my period he said it might decrease my chances of getting pregnant later in life but that it would eventually come back. Its been 2 and a half years and even though iv gained weight theres no sign of my period! Im not underweight but at the minute im trying to loose a bit of weight...could that be a reason why its not coming back? My mum wont bring me back to the doctor because she said he'll just tell me the same thing and I dont really want to go back anyway because he seemed quite dismissive last time! Lately its really been upsetting me because I want to be able to have children someday and Im worried this means I wont be able to...could someone please help me and explain whats going on? Thanks

If you are not eating enough for your body calories and nutrient wise regardless of weight many don't get their periods back. Also if you are activity is too high. What are you eating now calorie wise and what is your activity? Do you eat adequate fats? This is not only about wanting children but also you need a period for healthy body with your bones etc. If any of the things I stated are not healthy then you need to change that. If they are healthy then I would encourage you to go for another opinion

whats your height, weight and calorie intake????

Hey, I have gone through this the past couple years and I just got mine back, so I know how worried you are! Are you still going through recovery? Your body is smarter than you think it is. It knows something is still going on with your body that is making it an inhospitable environment for a baby. I would suggest to be brutally honest with yourself. Your comment on wanting to lose weight again makes me think you are not a hundred percent better. This is just a hunch, sorry if I am way off. I would also suggest a different doctor who you can be comfortable to talk to with health concerns. I really hope this helps! I wish you the best:)

Sorry I probably should have included more info...im 5'4 and 120lbs. I normally eat 1500-1600cals a day and burn about 200-300cals through exercise but I dont exercise everyday.

abbi333-Im not really sure if my fat intake is enough...it takes up about a quarter of my diet. Is this ok or should it be more or less?

eat more, guessing ur a teen, eat a lot more

i can't really offer any advice but i am in the exact same position as you, with almost the exact same stats! i lost my period in october 2007 and have only had one since then, and that was a 'forced' one due to being put on the contraceptive pill.

i've since come off it because it made me crazy but i've been around 120lbs for months now and still no sign of my period. i was even a little higher for a while, so i don't understand what's happening because i lost it when i was around 110lbs i think.

maybe it could be something to do with us 'dieting'? i don't know though- i eat around 1500 calories a day too, sometimes more, and i'm certainly not 'skinny'. i also eat a good amount of fat so it can't be that. even when i ate lots for months on end, there was still no sign of it so..

ugh. basically, i just wanted to say you're not alone and if i figure out the answer then i'll let you know! :)

Well I'll be honest, that's probably about enough cals to keep you at a maintain phase (per cal count I'm the same stats - only I have about 10lbs more muscle weight Wink and it says my maintain is 1680 at sedentary). If you are within the first 5 years of first getting your cycle then don't worry so much; these things can happen and more often than you think. Most college girls get this and almost never notice it because they are so busy. Cycles can come and go... hormones and stress can really pull you way out of whack.

If you're not in the first 5 years here's a checklist:

  • Sleep min 7.5 hours per night
  • Learn to find 30 mins per day to destress (yoga, meditation, nap, etc)
  • Take a multi-vitamin (just in case you are running low on something)
  • Take Calcium & Iron (bc no cycle = bone weakness and iron deficiency)
  • Try Phosphatidyl Serine. It's a "mood booster" can help with stress
  • Eliminate long-distance running, or any endurance training lasting over 60 mins in length. Studies show endurance training lasting over 60 mins can lead to severe hormonal changes in women - effecting cycles and also estrogen levels.
  • Try to watch your macro's (but not crazily Wink). Fat is a good thing - especially MUFA's (monounsaturated fatty acids). So add an oz of nuts as a snack; 200 cals and 20g of good healthy fats later and your hair and skin will love you Innocent
  • Avoid diets rich in anti-estrogens (i.e. don't eat nothing but soybeans all day)
  • Keep your weight balanced if possible; don't gain too quick or lose anything... just stay stable for a while.

I hope that helps. I battled with this also. For me it was a mixture of running, lack of sleep (I got about 6.5-7 per night) and stress.

make sure you're getting healthy fats in your diet. i remember i was on a literally fat free diet and when i started eating fats again, i got my period back. hope that helps.

This is often seen in althletes it is a sign of an eating disorder you do need professional help get it as soon as possible!  This can lead to many health problems in the future, such as cancers, heart problems, weakening of bones, and even death.
