Period period period. Where are you?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi.

I want to start out saying I am not 'underweight'. I have a healthy BMI, I eat plenty of good fats and I recently have seen an gynecologist. She wasn't very helpful but I will spare you the details.

Anyways, I am going to be a sophomore in college and my period was pretty steady until I got to college. At college it was there one month, gone another, 5 days long, 2 days long sometimes, very random. I then started to lose weight and it become even more scattered. I have heard that any weight loss affects your hormones and it takes time for your body to adjust to your new weight. I work out about 4 times a week, light exercise on the elliptical, and I waitress 5 days a week as well for 8 hours a day. I eat plenty of healthy fats and I have been trying to get my period back to no avail. My gyn said that it was normal, but then I read some posts on this forum warning it can cause infertility and blah blah blah. This really sucks because I LOVE KIDS. I am engaged and plan on marrying after college. I want to have kids, and I don't want a stupid diet to ruin my chances, I've always wanted to be a mom and experience pregnancy.  Anyway, I am confused, everyone has a different opinion on periods. I have spotted in the last month but I am always stressed out and I am trying to deal with my stress healthfully, and its going alright but the problem is its my 3rd or 4th month without a real, normal period.

I am 5' 6" with a very small frame to start out with. I went to college weighing 125lbs my freshman year. I gained 10lbs first semester, and lost the 10lbs second semester. My weightloss continued until now, where I am maintaining. I currently weigh about 116. I realize this is slightly low for my BMI even though I am not considered 'underweight'.

Well, I guess what I am asking is:

Have any of you ladies who are at A HEALTHY WEIGHT, (no eating disorder, ever) who eat NORMALLY ever lost their period for any length of time after HEALTHY weightloss? I never starved, binged, purged, over-exercised to any extreme, I just want some answers.

Thanks for reading this, you guys are the best.

PS:

I'm not pregnant, no STDS, no chances of either.

Thanks :)

Unfortunately this is me right now too. I don't want to be preggers or anything, but like you I do someday right? lol. Well the only thing I know is when I took 5 days off from the gym and I ate just normal, non-diet food (had surgery, needed to recover), I got it back by the 4th or 5th day. 2nd day of period I went back to the gym and ate my normal perfect diet and it was gone... haven't seen it since. :(

Haha, thanks for the reply. I am only 19 (almost 20!) but I know in the future I do want kids and I have read so many things about losing your period causing infertility--it just kind of scares me, so I add the stress of freaking out about not getting a period onto the stress of work, etc and its just not good.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this though, haha :D

I went through the exact same problem. I am your height, and also weighed about 125 my freshman year. I worked out on a regular basis, and my college campus consists of mountains...literally. My period would come every 3 months sometimes, every other month, definitely not on a regular basis. I also went the the gynecologist and got the same results of being perfectly fine.

After losing about 8 pounds one year, then gaining 15 the next, mine was finally regular my second semester of sophmore year, without the aid of birth control.  I am however on it now, because when I would get my period, I would physically get sick from the severity of my cramps. fun fun.

It will eventually become regular. Just a note, my gyno told me that if after a three month time span if I did not get my period that I should go back to see her. So if it's going that long i'd make another appointment, just in case.

Has anyone had the progesterone shot?

Its normal for women to skip/miss periods when under stress. It has happened to me while at University. But if you are missing that many, unless under constant stress, then I would get a second opinion. Has any other women in your family gone through periods of time without Aunt Flo comming to visit? Perhaps consider yoga as an exercise that can help you de-stress.
